I've been thinking ever since it was announced that FF was headed for VC...could this be any indication of the later FF games coming to VC? Or at least FFII (IV) and FFIII (VI).
That brings up another question, too. If they only bring IV and VI to us, since it wasn't released out of Japan, will they call them IV and VI, or will they stick with the original names of II and III?
Well first of all, their "original" names are the ones used nowadays, their were numbered by the time they were made. (that's obvious.) In the USA they were renumbered because of various factors, like new generation of consoles, lack of time, or thinking children outside japan are retarded, made them skip some of the games, so when IV was released in the US, there was no II or III released there, thus why the SNES version became II in the SNES. They could use subtitles instead, but no, now the mistake is already made. This was corrected on the next releases on PS1.
That explained why "the original names of II and III" are not "original" let's go on topic.
The ERSB seems to indicate that, as the SNES version was incorrectly numbered, it will mantain this on the VC release, for nostalgia, avoid blind SNES fanboys that can't see that FFII FFIII FFV are awesome and worthy of mention and "genuity" sake. Or because they don't give a damn and just want the money. And since the other games were never translated square won't bother doing so, just for a virtual re-release. So expect FFI, an deformed simplyfied FFIV (as II) and FFVI (as III).
My Advice: Buy I and VI in VC, and IV but just if your nostalgic of that version, if not just buy it on other plataform, like PS1, European GBA cartridge, or DS. The other ones, buy them in other plataforms, and if you really REALLY want to play them like their original version, play them with a fan translation in a emulator (WARNING: This IS ALWAYS illegal!!! i'm not responsable, or anyone here, for the actions of others). But since you bought them, you already contributed to the industry and to Square and since they not going to be released, your spirit is calm since you didn't anything wrong, because the laws are there just for protecting their creative property and finacial health...
I believe FFIV (II) at least was confirmed already. It would actually make sense for them to use FFIV, since isn't the WiiWare sequel entitled FFIV: The After Years?
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
Because Virtual Console, for the main part, gives us the games as they were before. The only thing that gets edited are licensing issues. The fact that the SNES Final Fantasy games are incorrectly numbered will be mentioned in the game description obviously. They'll say something like "the second Final Fantasy game released in America but more commonly known now as Final Fantasy IV"
Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!
Seeing as any romhacker with any semblance of self respect could do a title screen swap of those games in 15 minutes or less, I'm sure Square could do it without too much hassle considering they have the source code laying around and everything. Especially seeing as releasing it with the wrong name would actually hurt sales...
There is a lot of things that any ROM hacker could do to improve a number of VC games. But correcting or improving games isn't on the agenda for Virtual Console games.

I believe names of VC games have been changed in the past, so I'd expect these two to do so too. At least then it gives a gap for the other games to be released, however likely or not that happening is.

But few things are as easy as a title screen replacement... Atleast when they don't have to design it themselves (which is the obstacle that trips up some romhackers), they can just lift it straight from the Japanese release.

Well, obviously they're not the original names, you don't have to explain that. But they are the "original" names in the US, which is why I was wondering if we'll only receive IV and VI
Well they won't translate the Japanese only Final Fantasy games for release outside of Japan despite a translation already existing. Its just not something that happens for the Virtual Console. Although I would be very very amazed if I was proven wrong (wouldn't get NES FFII or FFIII but would get SNES FFV).

I know but they still won't. Its already ESRB rated as Final Fantasy II anyway so the point that it should be FFIV and is easy to call it FFIV is pretty much moot.

Even if they have translations of other versions for the "Japanese only" as you call them, it's not like they can chop it and fit it on a an old 8/16-bit rom, restest it etc.... just for a virtual 6-9€ release. They didn't bother with FF1 glitches (Phantasy Star II of what i heard they correct some problem with the max lvl.) they won't bother with translations.
"wouldn't get NES FFII or FFIII" Boooooooooooooooooo
FF I & IV was rated but not VI,right? Maybe they'll remake it before releasing it on the VC. If they decided to do that I rather have the game in 2D like the remakes of I & II on PSP.
I hear its amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on hari-kiri rock!!! I NEED SCISSORS!!! 61!!!
Since they made been remaked on the GBA (FFI, FFII, FFIV, FFV, FFVI) as Final Fantasy Dawn of souls And Final Fatasy Advance series, plus Final Fantasy 3 came out for the DS i'm more interest seeing FFVII and above for Wii and DS in the future.

If by "already existing" you mean the officially translated versions for PS1, GBA and DS that's a MUCH harder thing to do. Dumping and inserting scripts in general is a complicated thing to do in the first place and you're bound to get alot of things not working properly and loose strings or whatever... But dumping and then transferring that another another system entirely... That's a fairly monumental task... Would probably require you to manually edit in string by string one at a time, a rather unfun thing to do to be honest. If by already translated you mean fan translations... Then they just wouldn't do that... Would be the easiest solution... But they wouldn't...
Comparing switching a games title screen and dumping and reinserting an entirely different script for a different system... That's a kinda flawed comparison. It's kinda like trying to compare flying a kite and manually landing a Boeing 747 blindfolded...
As far as I know, only Final Fantasy 1 and 4(II) are slated for release. I'm hoping we'll get FF: Mystic Quest, too, though.
And as much as I'd like to play FF3 and FF5, I'm afraid that translating them is far too complex and time consuming for Square-Enix and Nintendo to invest their money in. Oh well, that's what fan translations are for, 'm I right?
I'll bet FF4, FF5, and FF6 will appear on VC, someday, I know it will. If not FF5, then I have other ways of playing it (ahem*Final Fantasy Anthology for PSX*ahem).
I believe names of VC games have been changed in the past, so I'd expect these two to do so too.
The Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 is listed as "Super Mario Bros. - The Lost Levels", and MERCS is listed as "Wolves on the Battlefield: MERCS", though both games kept their original title screen.
In their cases, though, the alternative name they're listed under has never ever appeared on a title screen for this game, while title screens for both "Final Fantasy II" and "Final Fantasy IV" exist for that game..
