Topic: Is component incompatible VC-games a PAL-specific problem?

I've noticed that some of my VC-games can't be shown using a component cable. For some games e.g. "Earth worm Jim" this problem can be solved by pressing a combination of buttons, but for others component appears to be simply not supported, e.g. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts or Castlevania.
For this reason i've purchased an rgb-scart cable which I use instead of the component one (which I used until recently with a 32" HD Samsung LCD), and it provides a beautiful picture on my standard definition 21" B&O MX 4000.
I was wondering if this incompatibility is somehow related to the 50/60 Hz issue?
In my opinion rgb-scart is far superior to the yellow composite cable that comes with the console. As far as I know these superior scart-cables cannot be used with north american NTSC-consoles. So if I decided to import a NA wii in order to avoid the butchered PAL-conversions, would I then have to suffer with cable switching and composite quality for some VC-games?

I cannot tell you why this problem exists other than Nintendo not considering that people might want to use component cables and download VC content which seems a bit daft. Also disappointing that the button-pressing is a workaround until a "final fix," but it's been in place for over a year now. I'm just glad I was lucky enough to have a TV that can display interlaced resolutions over component so I've never been affected by this issue.

With regard to your second query, RGB SCART is the best output you can get this side of Component, which only edges it slightly by supporting progressive scan output, so it's not really a matter of opinion! Only PAL systems have the SCART pinout on the video connector; on Japanese systems there's some kind of SCART equivalent that's mapped instead and that pin is absent on North American Wiis. If you import either your best bet would be an S-Video cable, which isn't as good as RGB SCART, but still better than composite.

Aha, so it's more an issue of "progressive resolution"-incompatibility, than one of "component cable"-incompatibility per se?

Whatever causes it they need to fix it - I'm sick of switching my TV connection all the time. It's such a pain in the arse - it's like swapping game consoles but it's the same one!

Yes. Basically the games seem to just display 480i (60Hz) or 576i (50Hz); some of them are in some kind of 480p wrapper, but the overwhelming majority are not which causes problems for folks since it appears that a large number of plasma/LCD tvs will only display progressive scan signal over component connections meaning you'll get a black screen otherwise.
