There is an official timeline, but it doesn't matter much 'cause Zelda games don't have a whole lot of story anyway. They could take place in different universes for all I care (like FF with its moogles and chocobos and other similar stuffs)
@Link79 Perhaps, but you do remember Shigeru Miyamoto saying that he will never reveal the document that has the Zelda timeline, because if he did they would not be able to add to the timeline/make more games? At least I think that's what he said...
I highly doubt they have every single Zelda game planned out already. The timeline is simply updated with each game (if there really is a timeline).

I think The Legend of Zelda's sphere of timeline and existence is sort of like that of Star Wars and Avatar The Last Airbender. In a way, the realm in which Link, Zelda, Ganon and Ghirahim exist is so vast and powerful that time ebbs and flows across a continuum that is powered by the Karma of the Universe itself.
Link is much like King Arthur, Merlin, Obi Wan Kenobi, Aragorn, Gandalf, Aang and the Biblical Prophets and Angels in that when the world needs them most they can always be called from Avalon, Middle Earth or Heaven to aid morals in the struggle against evil. Basically, like Aang or Avatar: TLA or Kenobi of Star Wars our hero Link doesn't actually die the way mortal men die. Link and Princess Zelda seem to sort of go into a Nirvana dimension and like Yoda, Aanga, King Arthur and Kenobi resides their until he is called upon.
I don't really pay attention to the so called Timeline anyway. All I want out of a Zelda game is an exciting story of Good Vs Evil. As long as there's a daring Hero out to banish evil from the land it's all good with me.

@Tasuki And then obviously all the Toon ones are the same.
Truthfully I dont really know where toon Link fits in since I could never get into those games cause of the god awful graphics.
Whats disappointing is how many copies that game sold and how popular it was. It just proves that you can slap the LoZ name on something and people will buy it up no matter how bad the graphics story etc. is.

What's really disappointing is how there are people in the world that bash something, no matter how fun it is, or how good it is, or how many people actually like it and enjoy it, just because they don't like the graphics, story etc. (which, by the way, the story is perfectly fine, I'd like to see you come up with something better) and fail to realize why it's good and think that anyone who actually likes it only because of the fact that it is Legend of Zelda based. That is truly disappointing. Open your mind a little, why don't you?
^^This. I think the graphics are fantastic, but that doesn't even matter; graphics don't make the game. The gameplay is great, the story is great, and the adventuring and discovering is also great. Link also has a bit of a personality in Windwaker.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

I just want to point out that this is the worst argument ever. I'm not trying to single out the poster who stated it in this thread, it's just a pet peeve I have.

The Legend of Zelda series has the worst storyline in any successful video game I've seen. It's so mixed up and random you can't follow it even if Moses tried to help. <<Bad reference aside, there's no way anyone can contradict that.
On a different note I'm assuming Skyward Sword will be game of the year for most game reviewing sites/magazines as I have high hopes for it and hopefull by November I'll have beaten Ocarina of Slime.

Oh, and have a nice day.
Oh, look! A meme! And a fresh one at that.
