Not many here will get it, but I took the plunge again this year and picked up the new version of Hooked! Fishing. My family really enjoyed the last one at thanksgiving and everyone had a blast trying to catch fish. The original and Carnival Games were the big family hits last year.
The new one came out this month, complete with Motion+ Support. There's a lot of fixes that have been made. New locations and fish have been added. The above water world still looks a little choppy but the water effects have been improved and look alright. The below water world looks a lot better, they definitely fixed some stuff down here. The fish seem to have a little more life. A few swam around and hunted my lure this time.
The casting is a whole lot easier this time around, which is what frustrated some people on the last one until they got used to it. This time it's as simple as holding A and doing a smooth cast, you can switch it up above-head or side-arm both directions.
The Motion+ helps fighting the fish become a little more strategic this time around. There's also an option to turn off the line breaking if you want to have fun with little kids or noobs.
The fishing rod has also been updated. The main adjustment is the obvious extension to hold the Motion+ adapter, and they hollowed out the tip to allow for some menu selection with the pointer. It still gets in the way sometime, but still far better than having the pointer completely blocked on the last one. The rod's now a sleek black color with gold parts.
I still have a lot of tournaments and lures to unlock, but over-all I am happy with the improvements to this version. The last one I would have given a 6.5, this one is up at least a point to 7.5. Still plenty of room for improvements, but it's one of the more solid fishing titles on the Wii. The inclusion of online play in the original and this version still help it stand out.
Definitely not the game for everyone, but if you love fishing games this should keep you occupied and worth checking out. Too bad you can't rent it with the rod attachment. With luck someone in your family will bring it to Thanksgiving
