Its much more of a challenge in single-player. Which is better imo.
QUEEN OF SASS
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
I haven't played multiplayer, since the missing online, but I have heard that the multiplayer is pretty much just complete insanity and it is very hard to finish the game with 4 people. Single player was a blast though and did have some levels where I died a couple of times before finishing. I'm going through now trying to get the star coins, which seems to be a challenge so far.
Multiplayer is made to be fun. If you're only concerned about collecting all the star coins and going quickly through the game, then multiplayer is not for you. But that is why they made coin battle. What I did was, start my own file for only me to play on, and I had another file, for when my sister or cousin wanted to play with me. But now I just let them play on mine, because I beat the game, so they can now help me collect all of the star coins.
in short - To get the most out of NSMBW, play by yourself!!! If you want to have fun, and goof around, play multiplayer!!!
Multiplayer is fairly fun with people who don't get in your way, but single or two player is tons of fun. I'm with Twario; I forget this is multiplayer alot because single player is just so... filling. By far my favourite Wii game to date. Hesitate no longer, my friend.
Both modes are fun. I haven't had much of a chance to play multiplayer and when I have its always with people of significantly lower skill to me. I end up carrying them over hard bits or watch them quickly die only for me to end up finishing the level by myself. Even when that happens, which for me has been always, its still fun. The free mode and coin modes are probably the best places for multiplayer.
The single player experience is also well up there. Its a completely different game in single player modes but being a full Super Mario Bros game its still very solid. I say that in a non "Mario Kart single player" sort of way, both modes are equally good and you can buy the game for either or both. Even if you can't get some multiplayer happening the single player modes alone will keep you occupied for a while.
I have found that 2 players make the game easier as you can easily talk to each other and help each other out, 4 player makes the game a lot more chaotic but in a fun way, also i have noticed that when playing 4 player the Superguide doesn't pop up. One problem I have found wth 4 player is that when 1 player dies the game freezes for a split second, this is a bit annoying, especially mid jump. Has anybody else experienced this?
Also the game is as much fun on its own as any previous Mario game so don't let the additional multiplayer put you off, it is a addition and not a necessity

I noticed it but I never found it "annoying". I actually think its a good thing because without it you probably wouldn't notice that your opponents/helpers had died. Its a nice little "who just died" moment and helps spark more in-game banter. Otherwise its just a death sound comming from their remote (does it also come from the screen?).
I also find it cool how everyone, in isolation, is mentioning how awesome it is that the enemies "dance" to the music. I noticed it quickly and thought it was cool but then went back to New SMB on DS and saw it in that game also. Odd, because I didn't remember it. Another thing about going back to New SMB on DS, I kept trying to do the "shake spin" thing but only noticed when it wasn't happening. It seems I use that control mechanic on New SMB Wii A LOT.

An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
Two-player is a million times more fun and not at all more difficult, but single-player is already a million times more fun than nearly every other game on Wii, so there's no reason to be hesitant.
