I'm still trying to decide which NES game to get with the 500 Points I got back from the Internet Channel. I'm torn between Kid Icarus and Punch-Out. While surfing the internet, reading reviews and stuff, I stumbled on a point that got me really worried. HDTV Lag. I've encountered many sites that said Punch-Out is nearly unplayable on a HDTV. That got me worried. Especially since not all HDTV's had that problem. I have a Philips 22 PFL 3403 tv (no game mode as far as I can tell), Wii is connected with component cables, 480p, widescreen.
Which games is the HDTV lag most noticeable. I tried Dr. Mario and it seemed to work fine. But are there any games in which the HDTV Lag is really noticeable. Otherwise I just get Kid Icarus.

The reason why HDTVs might have lag is that there is a delay in processing the picture to make it better. But this depends on the TV. Cheaper TVs will probably have lag. The best way to find out is to search your TV specifications for the "response time". If you haven't noticed a lag, then you probably don't have to worry.

My tv has a 5 ms response time. But from what I've read is that the HDTV lag isn't about reaction time, but more about resolutions and image scaling. http://gear.ign.com/articles/712/712352p1.html

I don't think its usually a problem if you haven't had it before. From my understanding you'd more likely have lag problems if you played with standard composite cables on the wii at 480i but since you're using 480p I would think you'd likely have less problems.
I think the easiest way to feel the "HD-lag" is to waggle your pointer at your TV screen. If you are used to crt screens then the response time is so fast that it feels like you are pointing to your tv with a stick. Pointing to a tv with lag is like pointing to tv with a 6 feet long drinking straw. Super Mario World is pretty unresponsive, try making some precision jumps in it. Also have a look at these: https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/virtual_console/controller... https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii/not_getting_169_or_am_i_whats_the_deal gets a bit off topic on page 2 discussing lag.
Thanks for all the info. I feel I bit more secure about getting Punch-Out if I want that one (still in doubt). I do have another question though. I started Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It had Masterpieces that let you try older games (one is Kid Icarus). I didn't experienced lag as far as I can tell, but my tv switched back from 480p to 576i and the characters in movement looks interlaced (hence the i). Is that only in SSBB or also for the normal NES VC games?

can anyone here with an HDTV say if 'game modes' really work? i'm thinking of getting a cheap samsung that has a game mode, but if it's not very effective i might wait for something better...
