Topic: Earthbound/Mother needs a retro revival

I would very much like to see an Earthbound/Mother needs a retro revival game on Wiiware. I just seem like a really strange and fun game. Final Fantasy After Years did pretty well. A game as aswome and fun as Mother may even do better.

Wasn't that just a straight up port of Mother 1&2? They can just put those on the retro VC. They should make a whole new game with a new story.

@Reifu: No more Mother games unfortunately according to the creator

No, they were full remakes, with a bunch of tweaks and visual upgrades, and if it were released outside of Japan, it would need to be completely translated(it got a new script, so they can't recycle the one from Earthbound and the unreleased Mother 1). We're already getting retro-looking remakes, and since the GBA version never came out in the U.S., there's always a chance.

Well it's not like he can't change his mind when ever he wants

"Full remakes" is a bit misleading. They were largely identical to the originals. Most of the tweaks were taken from the US versions, despite the US version of Mother not even being released, and there were a few minor additions otherwise. But mostly the graphics and sound remain the same, the story's untouched, etc. So it depends on your definition of "remake." While there are a lot of tiny changes, I'd still say it amounts to no more than a tweaked re-release.

Personally, I'd rather the VC games. Nintendo could certainly give the games a more significant remake with the creator's permission since he was more involved with the story, which they'd surely keep in tact, and I'd love to see that happen someday down the line if it means increased odds of a worldwide release, probably with a new soundtrack.

A sequel is unlikely, though. As others have pointed out, Itoi does not want to make games anymore. He has said offhandedly that if someone else wanted to make Mother 4, he'd be okay with it, but it's difficult to tell if he was serious through translation. I am very skeptical, and most Mother fans are. However, there is a nice-looking fan project underway...

Come on, friends,
To the bear arcades again.

We have no chance of that happening until we get Earthbound on the Virtual Console, and even then, god knows if we'll see it or not.

Nintendo is cheap, and issues that (NA) Earthbound might have legally, Nintendo is just too cheap to do it, even if it means having like 1 bucks from every game sold going to whoever. They are THAT cheap. If they really cared about their most die hard fans, they would just take a loss and give it to us even though it's not much of a profit.
Seriously Nintendo, not everything you release has to be sold and then sold at a profit.

Not exactly. If the lawsuit is legit, then they could no longer sell the game

Money cures any potential lawsuit, if Nintendo just offered whatever party(ies) that there might be an issue with a percentage of the sales from the game, I guarantee you that they would shut up. IF there actually is issues.
But Nintendo has never, NEVER NEVER let another company get a % of profits, which is probably why we don't see Rare games on VC because they would have to give money to Microsoft.

If you are referring to games like Conker, Banjo Kazooie, and Perfect Dark, then no. Microsoft has their own downloadable service which has those games on it, which means Microsoft probably said no to those games being on VC

Also, you are incorrect about the profits argument. Since Nintendo does not own some of the games on the VC, they cannot be the only company making profits from those games. If I remember correctly, Nintendo makes 30% of profits from games they do not own.

My apologies, I should've stated Nintendo's profit. However Earthbound would be 100% towards Nintendo, what I meant is that Nintendo never gives a share of their money to anyone. I mean they were so cheap they went with AAC for the DSi and not pay for the MP3 format, or even pay to let video play on it.

IF they could pay to get Earthbound out, it would eat a % of THEIR profits, and even though I think they should do that, I've NEVER seen Nintendo do that, ever.
