I got tired of how my Widescreen games looked kinda ugly on my old box TV. text in my games like skyward sword and the new Rayman Origins looks too small and is hard to read. I'm about to get a new TV but I'm wondering how will older games look that aren't in Widescreen? Will I have to constantly be changing the screen settings everytime I play an older game not made to that resolution?

no problems playing vc games on my widescreen tv. they all look great. some non-vc wii games look worse though because of borders: wario land, kororinpa, mario party 8, super mario all stars
I've been noticing while playing Rayman origins on my old TV Rayman looks way too small. It's a 27 inch but I can barely see him. Also the game text is hard to read. The game is only made for widescreen so I'm guessing that's why it looks crappy on older TV's. I was having the same problem with skyward sword. It was a struggle to read what the characters were even saying.

@ Waveboy I did try changing my Wii screen settings to Widescreen but on an old TV that just distorts everything. The black bars go away but then everything looks too tall. I did that with Skyward sword and Link looked like a Pencil. I hated being forced to play it in widescreen but sadly that's the only option. I'm definitely getting myself a newer TV soon. I'm tired of living like Fred Flintstone.

Living like Fred Flinstone is perfectly fine and super duper awesome if you're just a retro gamer. But it's time for us to leave those epic Old school CRT's(Instead just keep them for retro gaming. ) and upgrade to an HDTV. After all, the Wii U will be hitting in a year at the most so making the upgrade now or in a few or so months is the perfect time.
But ya, i don't exactly get that distorted squished tall effect when i set New Super Mario Bros Wii, Kirby's Epic Yarn or Return to dreamland in Widescreen in the Wii's Menu and 4:3 on my TV. it looks perfectly fine, maybe it's just because your TV's prehistoric and can't handle it hehe. Then again there maybe be some extremely minor squishing going on, but it's incredibly hard to tell on my set.
Oh and just a heads up, make sure you do your input lag research on whatever HDTV you plan on buying. If you don't, you're going to be frustrated with the amount of trial and error you'll be doing.
The best TV brands are Samsung, Sony, LG, and Panasonic. I'd recommend Samsung over the other brands, simply because they make their own LCD panels. Panasonic excels in Plasma's, so if that's what your looking for, try them.
Wavester, I got a Samsung 59" 3D 1080p Plasma for Christmas from my wife and it is so bodaciously awesome my stonewash tapered jeans are just bursting at the seems! Yeah the PS3 looks awesome and gaming in 3D is like taking a ride on Doc's DaLorean but the Wii's picture looks like a crap sandwich after a night of Cinco De Mayo all you can eat taco's. I still have the standard cables though and I know that is my problem. I am not looking to buy a $40.00 pair of "official" Nintendo Wii component cables as I am going upgrade to the Wii U next year so do you think one of the el cheapo's component cables would get me by for the next year?
The games I played so far, I haven't really noticed anything to complain about. Then again I didn't play on a CRT TV at the time to compare.
@Waveboy, Most LED LCDs don't have the motion blur issue, at least my LG 55' doesn't....but then again depending on the model you can always do into the settings and fix it. LGs TruMotion is great for some things, not so great for others where it is best turned off. You get bright colors and whites, very clear picture, but again with edge lit, thin LEDs, the blacks aren't up to snuff, and you get alot of bleeding when there isn't alot of color in the picture. Full, backlit LEDs fix that problem. You of course pay a little bit of a premium.... But like you said 2012 could come out with a few changes.
So based on theese last few comments, you all recommend Samsung, Panasonic, and LG for good-quality TV's?
What about Sony? Aren't they relevant too?
Sony TV's are overpriced compared to the other 3. I have looked at a lot of TV's lately and I thought Sony's picture was just not as good when looking at TV's of comparable prices. So yeah, you can get a great Sony TV but you are going to pay for it.
To blessed to be stressed.

I have the freaking SNES hooked up to my widescreen TV and it looks fine in my opinion. Only Megaman X looks a bit weird, and even then it's only if you look real close. Over all I think most retro games look fine on wide screens.
Ha! Days of Waves, I thought you were going to say buy those overpriced official Nintendo Wii composite cables that Scrooge McDuck can barely afford. I'll see. I may just try out some Rocketfish ones first for $8.00.
Yeah, so I went with Plasma. 600Hz of HD motion handling preformance handling is key for Blu-ray's and future Wii U HD gaming like you said! LED TV's are just more expensive and the color seemed so fake light brighty to me. I have two 3D movies Prince Caspian and The Lion King at the moment. Prince Caspian was alright, the 3D was an afterthought with the Blu-ray release but The Lion King was all kinds of awesome. Watching birds fly is like the coolest thing in 3D! My wife has jumped a couple times no joke, when watching the movies. Haha... Also, I got Batman: Arkham City for the PS3 so I could get my game on in 3D. So far it has been pretty radacious but I am sure you have been experiencing the sweetness that is 3D gaming for a while now the 3DS. Call me offically excited now for the future in 3D video gaming!

I wouldn't even go Samsung for gaming at this point again because of lag issues, but there are certain sets that get the job done. You really want 15-30ms, and nothing over. Seems like Panasonic ranks the best for both Plasma and LCD gaming-wise.
Sony for me, isn't even in the question.
Lag issues? I know Samsung has a "Game Mode" which bypasses some processing so if I have that issue I will try that out.
I've been warned by those BestBuy goober heads(even though they hardly know Jack poop and give out false info half the time) to stay away from anything Sony when it comes to gaming.
So the guys at Best Buy don't even recommend PlayStation products? I guess they're all Xbox fanboys over there. LOL

I have the Rocketfish cables, and they work great. They're officially licensed by Nintendo (they were when I bought them, not sure if the license still applies).
Also, can someone please tell me the difference between LCD and LED? Is LED a type of display like Plasma, or is it just a different form of lighting?
I noticed that some NES games look kind of darker on my widescreen TV. I think the most notable ones are Mega Man 3 and Super Mario Bros. 3. Other than that though, that's the only problem I've had with VC games.
