Well, the SNES Space Invaders is the same, but yeah, there's no way I'd buy any of those ports. Thankfully if you have a Japanese Wii you don't need to for the Namco games...
Agreed - sometimes ports are just as good (or even better!) than the original arcade game, but often they fall way short. For example, I'd buy Donkey Kong arcade in an instant but have little interest in the NES port.
Exactly...90% of the time the original arcade versions are better. There are some instances where the ports are better but it's rare. While I like the arcade version of Contra and it's a bit deeper the NES one is probably slightly more fun and I like how the music sounds better on the NES sound chip. Arcade hardware during the 80s and 90s was usually far ahead of console hardware. Bigger sprites, more colours, more animation frames were all common benefits of the arcade versions.
The MD port of Chelnov is loads better than the arcade one, but that's about the only example of a game where I prefer the port to the original (of course that is also only available on the Japanese VC, sorry!) - Quarth on the MSX is pretty good though and I cannot say I'm bothered about the arcade versions of Rolling Thunder 2 (MD port is pretty much identical to arcade from what I can see) or Darius I&II (Super Darius I/II for PC Engine - again Japanese VC, sorry) are also fantastic.
There are pros and cons to the console vs. arcade debate. I would prefer Nintendo release both versions and let consumers decide which version they want. With the NES versions of Pac Man, Xevious, and Galaga the games will fit your TV screen with out the black bars on the side, but the colors look washed out and not as vibrant as the arcade.
If Nintendo released the arcade versions of those games I would assume they would be more than 500 points which would give consumers the option of getting the cheaper NES version if they choose.
At least all of the NES versions mentioned in the first post are good arcade ports.
COMPARISONS Pac Man- NES version has slightly inferior graphics and sounds, but otherwise a good port Donkey Kong- very inferior to the arcade version Mario Bros.- toned down graphics and no enemy introductions, but otherwise a good port Dig Dug- great port Xevious- slightly inferior graphics, but otherwise fine Galaga- fine considering it's "Space Invaders Extreme" of sorts Space Invaders- SNES port is fine

Sega did it with Golden Axe and Altered Beast... I like the option to have both, plus the arcade negates the ever present 50HZ issue for long suffering PAL gamers. VC arcade support is a big let down.
