A friend of mine has a chipped Wii console. I try to convince him to get online so that we can battle it out but he dares not connect it to Internet. My questions are: Is it any risk going online with this Wii? Can it get "bricked"? Is it safe to update firmware?
What chip does it have I hear you ask... I don´t know and I don´t believe my friend knows. How could you tell? It is bought in Thailand at least two years ago.
It will likely depend on the nature of the "chip". There have been reports of people who have modded their Wii getting bricked by going online, but it all depends on the nature and extent of the hack/mod.
My Wii is chipped with the earliest modchip available as well as having the homebrew channel installed and I have the latest firmware and can play Mario Kart online without any problems.
I think it depends on the chip, as far as I'm aware chips that go on the DVD drive and bypass the lockout checks on the disc cannot be detected but I could be wrong.
Should be fine, Nintendo don't go out of their way to brick us. In fact, they rather just get rid of homebrew and modding with as little damage as possible.
