I read somewhere that you didn't need to swap friend codes in order to chat with it. Is this true?

In Black Ops as long as you have one plugged in you can speak to the entire lobby/team just as on other consoles, and I believe you can use it to chat amongst your party too if you form one.

That's fantastic! I might actually pick this up with the Conduit 2. What ever convinced Nintendo to do that then?

Well, I believe Treyarch pushed online chat for BO towards Nintendo. Nintendo, along with PDP (the guys who brought the headset to life), worked on the Headbanger Headset together. So yeah, most of the thanks (I think) should go to Treyarch
