I don't know if it's been mentioned already, but the Wii U recently got a price drop on Amazon. That's why the sales spiked so high.

Yeah that's a reason... But there is also ONE other reason

It makes for a fun spin on the news but I honestly doubt a significant amount of people bought a WiiU to spite Microsoft over their Xbone presentation.

People are also mixing terms up here. The percentages of sales on amazon increased, but to call it a sales spike? As I keep saying its very low down on the video game top seller list, so it's still not selling well at all. People are just jumping on the 875% figure without actually thinking about what it means. In reality, around 150 people are buying Wii Us every day in the UK. A few days ago ASDA was cheapest, so most of the 150 went there, maybe leaving amazon with 20 sales a day. Then Amazon drop the price and become cheapest, so the other 130 go to them. That scenario would be a 750% increase.

Don't be fooled into thinking Wii U is selling well. It's ranked alongside vita memory cards right now and it took sales growing eightfold to achieve that.

While others here are misunderstanding the number and overestimating the scale of it I think you're definitely underestimating it. Looking at Amazon UK's best selling items in games list in actual numbers it's sitting second in consoles. Above 360 with Kinect, 500GB PS3 slim, below the Red 3DS XL.

As for the Vita Memory card being at about the same ranking it's worth noting that most of the best selling items are games and accessories. Understandably because people buy more consumables than they do one off products like a console. The Vita Memory card is selling more than the PS3, does that mean the PS3 is selling badly in UK? Because looking at VGChartz the PS3 is selling reasonably well compared to its competition.

As for the point that an 8x increase in sales would mean nothing because it's not selling at all now consider this. If they were able to do that on a global scale and sustain sales at something close to 8x current sales they could sell another 2mill units by August. I don't think that can happen before there's more software but if that was to happen it would literally be a 3DS scale turn around. Hardly trivial.

You did your math wrong in your example. It would mean they took customers away from ASDA, then added more sales on top of that.
The example you gave to try and prove Wii U wasn't doing well, actually proved it was doing better than it was.

I'm pretty sure people didn't buy a Wii U in spite of the Xbox One. They just saw that there wasn't much to be impressed about in comparison, so they figured they should get one.
Wii U already has TVii, an internet browser, some games, and GamePad = SmartGlass, so people figure they're getting a just as good product for less, sans graphics and Kinect.

Graphics and Kinect is literally the only differences between Wii U and Xbox One right now.

I think it's great that the sales are increasing. I've said it once and I'll say it again - I think a lot of people are going to end up quite shocked at how well the Wii U is going to do this generation. We just live in an increasing "NOW NOW NOW" culture that possesses no patience or ability for foresight whatsoever.

They're selling nearly nine times more than in past weeks, so I'm glad Nintendo's taking it back onto the market and not slipping away from their goal to keep Iwata at the presidency.

Being blunt, XBOX ONE's conference wasn't my cup of tea, and they primordially focused on streaming, oh, and of course, TV and Sports.

Yeah, honestly I think the sales will pick up even more after we get some more 1st party titles.

As for the discrepancy between US and UK amazon Wii U's sales rank, it might not only be the price drop but really also the XBOX ONE reveal. XBOX ONE might appeal more to american consumers than european ones, I also don't think even half of those TV and sports things will work someplace else than america. So yes naturally americans might be more happy with the XBOX ONE than europeans and it will factor into Wii U sales that are tied to the XBOX ONE reveal. And yes... if you sold 3 Wii U's on one day and 27 the next day you got a 900% rise in sale, but it still sucks!

I went from not knowing if the Wii U was the system for me, to absolutely loving and jealous over my sisters Wii U. Screw the plain PS4 and Xbox One, the Wii U and it's awesome gamepad is enough to sell me ALONE

Sales will get a real shot in the arm after E3, pre Xmas with a 3DS-like software + price drop combo.

What that rise will mean in the big picture remains to be seen. There's a lot of work to be done to make up for such a wasted year.

I don't see this amazon stuff as being significant at all. When you're selling this badly, any upward change is magnified.

If they were selling zero units to start with the sales increase would be a division by zero. The fact is they are selling about 5x less than their best selling current competitor globally (PS3). If they were to increase their sales by 875% that wouldn't be nothing, that would be basically equal to the number of units the Wii was selling in late May 2007.
