There.

Touchscreen gaming is not a gimmick, it is simply an alternate way to control games. Touchscreens have been used for games for almost a decade now, and they aren't going away, because when used right they are fun.

When the Wii-U debuted, many people who watched the press conference thought it was an add-on for the Wii. The name is horrible. It's like if the new Xbox was called 'Xbox 370'. It's too close to the previous systems name.

You're serious? You honestly mean to tell me that you watched the Wii U's debut and couldn't figure out that it was a new console? Either people are REALLY thick, or you're trolling.

If it was called the Xbox 370, people wouldn't be confused because 370 is higher than 360. It wouldn't make sense. It'd be just as dumb as One, but people'd understand. I think calling it a Super Wii would be more confusing or even Wii 2.

I knew it was a new console. Lots of other people weren't sure what it was though, and this can be validated by a Google search. The Wii-U 'reveal' only showed the gamepad and didn't even show that console.

There's a link where Iwata himself says the reveal was confusing and done poorly. I guess you can argue with Iwata and try to convince yourself that he's wrong, or you can accept that he's right and that the Wii-U debut was crappy. Up to you.

I thought it was settled science that the Wii U is the lamest name ever and should have never been used?

I'll admit that it took me a minute to get used to saying "Wii U", but it wasn't confusing. From the reveal at E3 2011, I knew it was a new console.
Heck, if hearing the name Wii U is confusing, being in this glorious information age, why not just google it? It's not like everyone that can afford one can't just do a quick google search and see in a matter of seconds that it was a new console.

@MostofYou You follow the news though. Not many people follow gaming news every day of their life. Most don't even follow it at all. The first time someone from the general public hears the name Wii U, they're not going to think "NEW CONSOLE" because hardly anyone knows what a console is to begin with. Most truly did think it was an add on when hearing about it from people in the family who follow gaming news. Heck, people today STILL either don't know it exists, or don't know it's a new system. You could walk up to a random mom in a Walmart with her kids and ask her what the Wii U is and she either wouldn't know or would think it's just an expensive add on. This is due to a lack of advertising.

Because good product does not necessarily means good sales. The world we live in now, products are sold with hype. No hype=No sales and Nintendo did not give enough hype for the Wii U. Not only the advertising is awful, the game drought in 2013 and 3rd party devs jumping ship did not helped either.

Not to mention the hype-killing remarks EA made towards the Wii U back in 2013 when they got b*tthurt about Nintendo breaking up with them. Although most of the remarks are blatantly false, it still left a bad taste for casual consumers.

All the things that can possibly go wrong with a console, it happened on the Wii U. It's sad really, the Wii U deserves better. Lets hope Nintendo can turn this around

Good job quoting the article author, and not Iwata himself.

"He said: "Because we put so much emphasis on the controller, there appeared to be some misunderstanding."

"We should have made more effort to explain how it works," Iwata said in retrospect

Does that sound like a company president who was pleased with the reveal? No. He says it wasn't clear and not enough effort was made to properly distinguish it from the Wii. Again, if you want to ignore the words of the Nintendo boss and disagree with his assessment, be my guest.

I like how you consider that short article to be the complete interview between Iwata and IGN. I suppose that one line is enough to deduce that Iwata thought the reveal was awful.

Yea I do not see how some are pointing at marketing as being the biggest or one of the bigger issues.
Also, I have this strange feeling that I've seen quite a few threads similar to this.

When his quotes regretting decisions they made during the reveal are combined with the numerous articles posted online afterwards calling the reveal poor, it's safe to say the reveal of the Wii-U was not handled well.

Iwata never said it was awful. No need to assume because he didn't say it was great.

As for the other half of your reply: no. We do not need an interview, a biography or a documentary, to conclude that Iwata clearly is not content. He spoke in few sentences that gave everyone a gist of his concerns.

Aren't a bunch of the indie games on PS4 and XB1 platformers that lack extreme violence, though? Fez, Mercenary Kings, Trials Fusion, Contrast, and a few more fit that bill. Then there's games like Rayman Legends. And then there's other games like Resogun, Peggle 2, and Super Time Force.

and isn't one of Wii U's upcoming titles Bayonetta 2?

And doesn't countering 12 year old's stupid obsession with blood = MATURE by being close-minded and equally dumb kinda pathetic?

The answer is the same for both, spoiler alert.

The Wii U isn't selling because people don't feel compelled to buy it. Plain and simple. Give them more reasons to buy, and you'll have increased sales.
A concept Nintendo seems to struggle with constantly.

Or because people want access to a variety of titles in different styles from different developers instead of being forced to select only among games developed by Nintendo, inferior ports of games available on 'last gen' platforms, shovelware and a small selection of titles developed by other people but published by Nintendo

What? i didn't say "Gee PS4 and XB1 are full of violent games"
or say "Meh Nintendo is full of kiddy games there are no violent games in it"

I meant that XB1 and PS4 main selling points and games are violent games, FPS's that's what most people want in a game nowadays, most, but not all.

"Third Party Support" for most people is preeettty much %80 Violent FPS games and %20 other genres and indies
