Does anyone else feel that the total games available for the Wii U is really disappointing. Don't get me wrong: I, like many others purchased the Wii U for its first party games and didn't have high expectations for third party support. But to be honest, the sheer number of releases and planned releases is just sad. To date the console only has about 80-90 games that have been released to retail (not counting VC). This may sound like a lot, but ever since the Wii's popularity, most games released for Nintendo consoles land firmly in the shovelware category.
I've owned my Wii U since earlier in 2013 and have had plenty of games to play through (10 or so), but now that things are starting to dry up, I realize there just isn't much on its way. There have been on average about 4 games released per month lately. FOUR GAMES! Since 9 out of 10 releases tend to be junk, that means maybe one game every 2-3 months is worth buying. Even the virtual console releases have been few and far between. They should be able to release at least all of the titles available on the Wii VC. I'm excited for Mario Kart 8, and will probably get Tropical Freeze just because, but other than that there's not much firmly on the docket. (Smash Bros unfortunately has never been my type of game)
Furthermore, there is only 1 SINGLE GAME that has a release date tied to it (Tropical Freeze) and all together there are only about 30 titles that have been announced for the U this year, and I'm sure some of these will get pushed out. The Wii had about 900 or so games released for North America over it's lifetime, and the Gamcube had around 600 or so - at the current rate, we can only expect the Wii U to have about 300 total. Just as a depressing comparison, The PS2 had close to 4,000 games released globally.
I guess I'm just ranting, but the figures paint a dire story. Hopefully things change - otherwise I'm just going to buy an Ouya for this generation. (I'm joking of course!)
True, which is why I don't own one of them, but those consoles were just released and both have at least 2-3 times the number of titles slated for release in 2014 compared to the U.
I guess one stat that makes things a little better is that the N64 (which was one of my favorite consoles of all time), had only ~300 releases in North America, and I was never bored with that thing. Hopefully Nintendo can pull the same magic again with the limited support they are getting.
Considering that the only game choices we had for the first year of the Wii were Twilight Princess (Gamecube port), Red Steel and Wii Sports, no WiiShop games, VC and zero network games... I would say the Wii U has been Nintendos best console launch to date
Remember when the 3DS had nothing at all and was a laughing stock to the gaming industry...
People are always going to bring out one metric or another. The Wii for example had one of the largest game libraries but you never heard people praise it for that number. Instead people brought up the worst reviewed games as an example of the really horrible games on that system. Despite the fact that nobody is forcing you to play those games.
Same thing here, nobody should really care what number of games it has. Really the only thing you should care about is whether or not it has games you want to play. If it doesn't then don't get it, if it does then cool. Whether it has or lacks bucketloads of shovelware or even alright games you're not interested in shouldn't be a factor.
I think we pretty much already know the primary titles in Nintendo's 1st party 2014 lineup and have rough release windows already. So I really doubt that things like Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Brothers are only the tip of the iceberg like you appear to be suggesting.
This is a fair point although it's worth noting the number of games we got in the last few months that we didn't know about at the start of 2013. The Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World being the two big ones. I wouldn't count on it and I wouldn't factor it into an immediate purchasing decision but don't be shocked if we get games in September to December 2014 we haven't heard about yet.
I agree that there will certainly be a number of releases that are unannounced. That's what will take the current list of 30 or so games up to 50 or so for the year. But, it's unlikely that there will be any big surprises (unless they do something with Zelda). But even at 50 games a year, that's not a lot in the long run. I feel like EA is done with the Wii U at this point. FIFA 13 was/is a great sports game for the U, but that and last years Madden are about the only sports games period - and obviously EA chose to not bring those games to the console this year. I think its all but expected that Ubisoft's support is also being scaled way back.
I know you've had your wii u for a longer time than I have (I got mine in October 2013) but I am absolutely STRUGGLING to keep up with all the games I want to play, and I still haven't even touched titles like Super Mario 3D World, Wonderful 101, Wind Waker HD, Deus Ex and Arkham Origins.
I dunno, what kind of games do you like? What games do you have? I could try and give you some recommendations.

Have Ubisoft stated this? That would be a sad event to happen, really, as I really enjoy their games... However, the Wii U install base is finally climbing again post-launch, so maybe the 3rd party support will come.
Well, I don't have that much money to get games, don't even have all the games I want for WiiU, and there are also games for 3DS I want, oh and for PS3 too. I wouldn't mind only one good game for the WiiU every two months, it actually suits me now that I think about it, but that is poor old me.

They said that they were going to use the sales of their games this Christmas (particularly sales of AC4) as a litmus test for future support. We haven't heard the results of that yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if they cut support.
They announced several games around Oct/Nov that will be skipping the Wii-U as well. I wouldn't be surprised if Watch_Dogs doesn't see the light of day on the Wii-U either.
total number of games for PS4 and Xbox One currently available must be even more disappointing...
Well those two just launched while the wii u has been out a year and has pretty much been ignored, and the system is barley slated to receive anything non Nintendo this year.
WAT!

I'm always open for suggestions. I have a bit of an eclectic taste when it comes to games. So far I own 3D World, NSMBU, AC3, Nintendoland, Scribblenauts Unlimited, Trine 2, Mass Effect 3, FIFA 13, Wind Waker, I might be missing one...
I enjoy all of the main titles for Mario and Zelda and would purchase the system just for those games, but I tend to not enjoy offshoot titles that contain those characters. For instance, I've always loved the Tiger Woods PGA Tour games, but never cared for any of the Mario Golf series, I've enjoyed the Olympics games on my PS3, but never got into the Mario and Sonic games... Something about the funky physics of these games, when they are trying to replicate an actual sport throw me off. I like most sports games (MLB, NHL, and FIFA) but unfortunately the only game that falls into those 3 sports I already own.
I also enjoy more mature fighting games like the Mortal Kombat Series and Soul Calibur but never got into the Smash Bros series (Perhaps Tekken is worth a look?). I like 3rd person shooters and action games, but never liked FPS's. I really enjoyed AC3 but I only finished it a couple of months ago and after playing it to 100% completion, I'm AC'd out for a while. Lastly, I really enjoy puzzle games, particularly when the puzzles are built into the game (I really enjoyed Trine). But I even enjoy simple puzzle games like Dr. Mario, Tetris etc. I'd be interested to hear if Dr. Luigi is any fun. Seems off to me though with the L-shaped pills.
Oh, and any game with Star Wars in it. But then again, you knew that. I am human after all.
Is it really disappointing? To me not really, because beating them (or 100%) can, and will, take a lot of time. This year looks pretty good too with Bayonetta 2 (give it to us already!), DKCR:TR and all that - those to games alone will probably have something around 20-40 hrs of gameplay at least
