I've had the game since just after release and haven't left any opinions yet as I really wasn't sure what I thought of it.My first impressions were not great, far from it but I was kind of expecting that so I have stuck with it,just playing the odd bit here and there and its grown on me a lot.I felt at one stage I was trying to force myself to like it which wasnt good but something just clicked with me the other day and now I can't stop playing it.
I could just play Corneria and a handful of other levels over and over trying to better my score and be happy with the game. It's not until you go chasing your high scores that you realise how intense the game can be. Copperhead Chaos is a good example ,you've got the pressure of the 3 missiles heading to the warp zone and those bloody drones attaching to the Great Fox but you're trying to rack up as much hits as you can before they make it.I really pushed it to the limit yesterday and racked up my highest score but the last missile was on it's 30 second count down and I was still a good bit away.As i chased that missile down,I was so in the moment it was unreal.I was positive I'd left it too late but somehow I made it with no more than a second on the clock. I actually shouted out loud "get that right up ye ya b*****d" when it exploded haha.It was absolutely exhilarating and it just wouldn't have felt the same with normal controls.
For those that have bought the game already and have cast it aside after not enjoying it,give it another chance,go after those gold medals and then your own high scores on individual levels and then you'll see what the game can really offer.
@Mykeprime I was having difficulty with the barrel roll too but I've started flicking it right to left or vice versa instead of twice in the same direction and I've been getting on a lot better with it. It feels more responsive that way,at least to me.
@OorWullie I don't move to the next level until I got the gold medal score on a level. Very rewarding game regarding the gameplay, with very tight level design!
@jariw That's a good way to approach it.How far into the game are you?
I'm curious ,what's everyone's highest score on Corneria? I've managed 320 and I know I can improve on it but probably not by much.I've watched the videos with the guy getting over 500 and I can't figure out how he's doing it.
Beaten the game. Yeah, I do have issues with it, but it was a great time. The replays are gonna really decide how I feel about the game though. Not sure when I'll get to that, might play some Star Fox Guard first...
You know that they haven't done a particularly great job with Star Fox Zero when you are enjoying (and prefer to play) their smaller side project, Star Fox Guard.
I eventually got used to the controls however, if you gave me a choice between playing it the traditional way - like in Lylat Wars - or how it currently is, I would choose the former every single time.
The graphics are not overly impressive (for a Wii U game) and is somewhat unpolished, but they got the visual style of the Star Fox universe down to a tee. The cutscenes and banter is a high point of the game.
I don't suppose that Nintendo will ever patch a more traditional control method into this?
I just don't feel any kind of motivation to go back to Star Fox Zero at this moment in time, especially considering Star Fox Guard is a lot more enjoyable, and surprisingly so too!
Listen up Ninty, this is why StarFox Zero stinks PU!!
1. We want to pilot a starfighter, not an airplane. I don't care if the spaceship has all-range mode, but it has to look like a spacecraft. Airplanes have no novelty, spaceships do!
2. The music stinks, esp. the parts where SFZero tries to remix the N64 score. Let it go! One of the reasons why the N64 score was so unmemorable was the type of music (ie. it sounded like the score from some sappy family movie). If you want to hear StarFox music done right, listen to the SNES score! If I could sum up the SNES music, it was "mysterious UFO" mixed with "John Williams STAR WARS imitation". You could try the formula with "mysterious UFO" + "John Williams Superman imitation", it would at least sound a lot better than some wannabe sappy family movie...
3. The bosses designs stink. I've always thought the N64 bosses were dumbed down imitations of the uber cool SNES boss ships, but erm, StarFox Zero was even worse in this category!
4. Transforming Arwing's physics doesn't make sense in real like. How can you shape-shift an aircraft like that and expect it to function? Don't the underlying instruments and engine components have to be sliced up in order for the transformation to work?
And the "Wolfen Walker" just looks plain silly. You can do better, Ninty, and here's how:
The Arwing calls in a small support ship whenever it needs to walk, sort of like Voltrons combining with each other, except it's the Arwing combining with the support ship to mutate into the Walker. This would be way more "Japanese" and awesome than that silly looking chicken mode!
With Hyrule Warriors 100% completed outside of Cucco's Fury, I decided to go back to this game. Got nothing to lose by trying for the 3,000 hits Nintendo UK challenge and cleaning up medals I missed in my playthroughs in April.
Got this on launch day, and, as per usual due to not having any time, it just sat there, unopened, un-played, until this past Saturday evening, when my wife was out babysitting, and my children were at home in bed.....play time
I was concerned about the controls after reading what everyone was saying, and how they take a long time to get used to etc, and I have to say, I did not struggle at all, and I do wonder how other people struggled so much that they ended up returning or selling the game. I do find this though, games where the controls are supposedly awkward like Star Fox, Wonderful 101 etc, I seem to get on with really well. Games where the controls are supposedly easy as anything to master and you can bet your life I'll be struggling with them for months.
Now I am hardly a "hardcore" player anymore (despite my huge collection of games that I buy, and owning every console) as I turn 30 in two days, and due to work and family, I simply do not have the time to put into games like I used to, which generally means that compared to other gamers whom I play online or read about, speak to etc; I absolutely suck. I also feel that games are simply too big and time consuming these days which can annoy me as I can have a short attention span sometimes before I'm thinking of something else.
I don't always understand controls or remember which button does what anymore, as I might play a game, then not have time to play it again for another 3-4 months, completely forgetting everything I have learned. Half the time I lose sight as to what the hell is even happening in the storyline as I either haven't been paying attention or I have simply forgot as it has been so long.
However, without sounding big headed, I feel like I took to Star Fox Zero controls like a duck to water. I found myself looking at the main TV screen 95% of the time, even when they're telling me to use the GamePad for "better aiming", and cannot really understand why people complain that they do not like having to look at two screens at once. Just look at your TV, forget the cockpit view on the GamePad and you'll be fine.
To me, it just truly felt like I was playing Lylat Wars for the N64, and, even though the controls are obviously different, to me, anytime I felt I had to think about which button to push, I just imagined my controller was an N64 one. This seems to have worked for me as I got to stage 6 or 7 (can't remember), in just one 3 hour session, which for me, is pretty damn good going.
I think the game is incredible, despite a few minor flaws, such as absolutely no online (and I'm not really a big online player), which I was really gutted about as I only bought Lylat Wars for the N64 back in the day for its multiplayer, I never completed the campaign at all as I wasn't overly interested in it. I also absolutely HATE the fact that you cannot save mid-level, and that there are no check points. Die, and it's straight back to the beginning of the level. It does keep you feeling competitive with yourself though as it pushes you to do better next time.
Apart from those two things, I am still quite shocked at the mediocre response the game has got, and the amount of negativity some people give it. It looks amazing, and to me, is just a solid, good, fun game to play, and much like some other games, like The Wonderful 101, I just wish people would give it a chance before dismissing it. Just my opinion anyway
Really? Must've missed them. I just want somewhere where I can play to, push save, turn the console off and go back to that same point later on at any time. The irony is I bought Lylat Wars when they released it for like ÂŖ4.00 on the eShop a few months ago, and for the first time ever, because it is a VC release you can obviously save the game at any point you like lol. Who knows, now maybe one day I will actually complete the campaign for it, albeit about 20 years later lol.
@WebHead I don't think this is the end of Star Fox, well unless Nintendo goes 3rd party that is. Avoiding IPs just because latest game didn't sell would lead to Nintendo running out of IPs to use.
