Is anyone else a bit terrified that this game won't have full voice chat during online play? I mean, for something so heavily oriented in cooperative strategy, a lack of voice chat seems like something that would completely kill the experience.

I dunno, voice chat has done a good job at killing my experience in games before.
But as an option, I think it's pretty important for Splatoon. Not only is it a team arena shooter, but the turf-war mode adds an RTS element.
To be fair the fact that you see where paint is and where each of your teammates are live on the gamepad circumvents it to an extent. Its not a complete replacement for having fun and team coordination (look at Halo 5's Spartan Chatter) but for Nintendo's need it would most likely keep voice chat from playing with randoms.
WAT!

Unless you want Splatoon to be an eSport or something for whatever reason, the game really doesn't need voice chat. It would be a great bonus but it's not gonna ruin the experience. Anyone that really wants to coordinate will just get on skype or some equivalent anyways.

But than it might as well have native chat. Also you don't have to be into esports to want voice chat. Sometimes you want to kick it with some buddies and go through the night embarrassing fools with paint.

It should be optional, like a lot of things (Nintendo sometimes does a poor job of giving player options)! There should be voice-chat rooms and silent rooms. I don't know about anyone else, but this would be perfect for someone like me. Sometimes I feel more outgoing, and sometimes I just want to have fun playing the game without being prompted to talk.
Or at least an auto-mute option. I know Halo has that apparently, but I could never find it. It's the main reason I stopped playing Halo...or pretty much any other FPS game, for that matter. It's not enough I suck at the game, I don't need everyone telling me I suck...and that my mother sucks...

But the problem with that is, if I was playing voice chat, I'd want everyone else to as well. It'd feel lonely to have my voice-chat on, and my 3 teammates completely silent. Or, on the other side, be the only one without it, and I'd feel like I'm not contributing, or that they might be mad that I don't have it on. I'd much prefer separate rooms, where everyone agreed before the start of the game to communicate as a team.

I'm not sure requiring players to have Skype and use it while playing is the best approach to game design, especially when Skype isn't built into the system.
