Topic: Pikmin 3 not multiplayer co-op story mode :(

Everyone thought that pikmin 3 was going to be co-op multiplayer because there were 4 captains, but in the recent article on nintendolife about pikmin 3, Miyamoto said "you have the three different leaders that you switch between to command your Pikmin" unless he messed up, or nintendo life messed up, or he meant three OTHER leaders. This makes me EXTREMELY less excited for this game (pikmin 2 is in my top three favorite games of all time) Pikmin 2 was perfect for 2 player co-op, and i thought pikmin 3 would add that, but it seems it may not.

What do you think?

I thought you were going to control multiple captains in single player or your friends could play as some of the captains in multiplayer

I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I would surely assume it would. If not then bummer.

Pikmin was always a single player game so I didn't expect a Co-Op mode. I'm really looking forward for this first big Nintendo game on WiiU and don't need a Co-Op-Modus to enjoy the game because Pikmin was always a great game for spectators.
However, a Co-op would be perfect for the game and maybe Nintendo is working on it.

I'm pretty sure they announced this at E3 last year. I think they're just making a challenge mode like they did in Pikmin 2.

Challenge mode was really fun so hopefully they'll at least make that 2 player (or 3 or 4 player!).
Pikmin is largely an exploration game so it does make sense that story mode has always been only 1 player.

My bet is challenge mode will be 1-4 player.

There's some sort of co-op in the game though, as confirmed by Miyamoto.

^This. It was already confirmed, and I see nothing implying otherwise. We've also seen all four playable characters. Probably was just a translation mistake.

Maybe Nintendo wants to keep the story mode only single player, because then the only person you have to blame is yourself if you make a mistake. Challenge mode isn't the main game to a single player, and is a more care-free mode that won't mess up your story if someone is playing along with you.
2 player co-op isn't an issue with me, because my brother and I are both good Pikmin players, but adding 3 people into the mix would be hard assuming this game is not just pick up and play that everyone would understand right off the bat possibly.

There's been no confirmation if story mode is solely single player. I believe they originally said there was no multiplayer but that changed at some point, and they haven't said in what form the co-op will be. Co-op story is just as plausible as the challenge mode. My fingers are crossed there, I can have quite a lot of fun with my friends there. As well as learning to refrain to kill them for being careless with my poor Pikmin.

Ya, I suppose. I guess there's extra files for a reason. They may have added story mode co-op or online which is why it was delayed, but I wouldn't count on it.

Aha yeah I can't imagine playing this game seriously with 3 of my friends. Playing New Super Mario Bros. on the Wii with 4 of us is an absolute clusterf**k. The people I hang out with don't really understand the concept of cooperation...

Exactly. Other players might not do what you want them to, and that can be frustrating when you could have done better not playing co-op, and going solo.
My brother and I are usually pretty equal on skill level, so it's not hard to play co-op or help each other out in a game.
My brother will also not play shooting(3rd or 1st person) co-op games, and will only play fighters like Smash Bros. or PS All-Stars sonce those are more accessible compared to Tekken or MK.
If Pikmin 3 does have co-op, I can guarantee I'll at least be able to play with my brother, but online will basically be necessary if you want to play co-op if you don't have people around you, so that's the downside to adding a feature that no one will be able to use without online.
Not everyone online is for sure gonna have a mic, lag could happen which what I complain most about in online games, and it can be overall harder to communicate with someone online when your main game is on the line.

Miyamoto himself said the Wii U cannot handle an online Pikmin, too many models to keep track of (100 Pikmin per person) and it already has to stream the data to a gameplay, multiplying that to 2-4 systems is too much. When he confirmed multiplayer he was clear that it's local only.

Despite the fact that I don't have any video gaming buddies (sad, but true), I agree too. It's fine in Mario since if you screw over other people or vice versa you just start over with no real consequence due to having lives and continues aplenty. But in a game like Pikmin, where it is RTS and requires precision control, plus the fact that Pikmin can't just pop back to life in an instant, makes for a disastrous scenario. Two co-op player is nice, but three-four at the same time? No.

If Multiplayer is optional then who cares?
