I don't care what other people think, I want this (hopefully real) game have similar gameplay to Sticker Star. Sticker Star was fantastic, especially those special realistic stickers that can interact with the environment.
Sticker Star is getting hate because it wasn't like TTYD. Did people forgot that every Paper Mario game is different?
@Nousername: 64 and TTYD were quite similar in terms of gameplay style where the latter improved on the flaws of the former. So the hate is towards both SPM and Sticker Star but more so Sticker Star because it initially looked like a return to the old style (e.g. early trailer with Mario having a Chain Chomp buddy) and then Miyamoto forced Intelligent Systems to drop the things in Sticker Star that made the first 2 games great.
The hate is well deserved and if Paper Mario U doesn't return to the style of the first 2 games, I totally expect the reactions to be similar if not more extreme than the Federation Force reveal.
@Nousername No...Sticker Star is getting hate because the battles have zero meaning, there's no story, no original characters (except for Kersti, but really, I don't think anyone gives a crap about her), the environments are bland and uninspired, and really, the only GOOD things about it were the music and the way they utilize the fact that the characters are made of paper. Everything else? Bad...just bad...I mean, if you like it, that's perfectly fine. You found something you like. But as for me, it just sucked...and I know that a while back I said in another thread that the only bad thing about it was that it was a Paper Mario game, but after that I did some thinking and...yeah. It's just not good. @Grumblevolcano They have to make a return to form. Nintendo honestly can't be that blind. If you go into any group of people discussing Paper Mario, the majority of them will say that Sticker Star sucked. If it ends up being Sticker Star 2.0 (assuming it's real), there WILL be a -storm.
@NintendoFan64: OK first off... your avatar really caught me off guard. XD
Sticker Star is the weakest entry, I'll agree to that but there are aspects of that game that can return; the more obvious ones being the music and the way the game embraces the Paper in Paper Mario. There are certain battle mechanics I'd like to see return in the next game too and I'm not talking about the sticker attacks.

Game in general is kinda over hated.
This. I'd call Sticker Star an experiment that... didn't go so well as planned with the audience. OK, so no freakin' big deal. I just don't like that some people won't let it go and start predicting that every Mario RPG from this point onward is Sticker Star x (where x is any number). That said, I hope the Paper Mario series returns to full form with future entries. Any experimentation can be done in the likes of Paper Jam (which I've yet to get).
By the way, Sticker Star also introduced new characters in the form of bosses, not just Kersti. In this sense, Paper Jam is way more extreme, in that no new character is introduced at all. So, I understand the concern some have regarding the new Paper Mario, and this is why I am keeping my expectation in check and expecting at best a game like the first Paper Mario but without new characters (and with a battle system as good as that of The Thousand-Year Door, as there's no reason why they should reuse the battle system of Paper Mario when that of the Thousand-Year Door improved it in many aspect while still keeping the core experience). Of course, I'm eagerly awaiting now for the next Direct, as the last one showed as first game the leaked Twilight Princess HD
All I know about Sticker Star is that I played it for around three hours, took it out of my 3DS and gave it to my nephew as a present. I've never felt a desire to play more of it. It was also my first Paper Mario. Not a good first impression. =_=
I think Paper Jam and Sticker Star represent an unfortunate trend in the simplification of the Mario RPG's. Paper Jam obviously less so than Sticker Star, but one can't help but notice that both games are, seemingly, considered not particularly strong entries in their respective franchises. Or maybe it's just me. I hope it's just me

It must be said that it has not much to do with the first two.
Simple case, the battles with standard enemies:
-in the first Paper Mario they are useful because they give you star points (the equivalent of experience points: 100 of them and you level up!) until you reach a level higher than that of the enemies. In that case, you only get what the enemies drop (coins, flower points, heart points). But of course, there is a nice badge that lets you defeat the enemies of a lower level than you just by touching them (but if you don't want to waste many badge points, you can also activate badges that let you defeat them by spinning on them or attacking them first).
-in the second (The Thousand-Year Door) they are always useful until you reach level 99. While enemies of a lower level than you don't give you star points, you always get a star point just for winning a battle. So, battle with weak enemies are recommended, as you have an easy star point. On the other hand, battle with stronger enemies give you a lot of coins, so there is always a reason to go into a battle unless you have no time to waste (and in this case the aforementioned badges from Paper Mario are in The Thousand-Year Door, too, except the spinning one because you don't spin anymore).
-the third (Super Paper Mario) is a side scrolling/3D platform game, but defeating standard enemies gives you points that allow you to level up.
-In Sticker Star, I personally don't have it, but this video is pretty clear:
Second stage and the question already arises...
Also, there are partners, flower points and badges in the first two, and the basic attacks can be done without using consumables.
But really, Sticker Star is so different from the first two that I should write an incredibly long wall of text to explain the differences, even just in the combat system! Just try the first if you have a Wii U! Even though The Thousand-Year Door is arguably better in many aspects (especially the battle system and the paper abilities), the first is still very fun!

The issue of the NSMBization of the Mario RPGs is evident, and the short development time of Paper Jam didn't help, as well as the concept of the crossover itself raising too high expectations. It's sad because you can see that AlphaDream tried to address the complaints made to them, with skippable cutscenes and tutorials, no longer main quests to collect X items all over the world and even the ability to save in every moment outside of battle and an Easy mode for those that find it too challenging.
On the Paper Mario side, it must be said that Intelligent Systems was forced to drop the game they were developing and start over with entirely new mechanics, which is likely why in Paper Mario badges solved the issues of enemy fights that don't give star points with the badges to defeat them directly while Sticker Star apparently takes the opposite approach.
In the end, you know what I think: after many Mario RPGs offered us so many new characters and settings the story, characters and settings of the New Super Mario Bros. series barely fit the Mario RPGs (they are different series with different purposes!), even though admittedly the platformers develop the characters so little that Paper Jam was in some ways really needed!
I'm not sure the M&L series was over-simplified... but made more linear since Partners in Time. Less extras to care about.
Dream Team did make a few steps in the right direction, but it also annoyed me at various points. I'll be playing Paper Jam with low expectations.
I just played Partners in Time and from what I've seen Dream Team and Paper Jam are different in this regard. PiT looks to me like a very short game (I managed to beat the final boss after 20 hours of gameplay and with the characters at level 30, while there are 99 levels possible...) with few things to collect and few sidequests (basically, beans, both from the spots and from the two minigames in the volcano, plus getting the ultra powerful clothes from Shroob Rex and Shroobworths, maybe there is something else but I haven't found it). Since a full map was made for the present, I am under the impression that AlphaDream was forced to release this game earlier and so we ended up with half the planned game.
The first 3 Paper Mario game were fantastic (yes, including Super). Sticker Star is very mediocre, but hated on a bit too much. The battles, puzzles, and platforming aren't good, but the visuals, music, and some gameplay segments are.

No freakin' deal except to me who paid $40 for the game expecting a good one. I will hate it as much as I want.
Sticker Star is complete garbage because it was one huge borefest.

So, what I'm hearing is you haven't played a Paper Mario game.

This, a really bad introduction to the series to be sure.

And I still say that there's certainly some overhate for the game. That's just what I think it is.
Honestly I regret buying Sticker star. I should of watched some gameplay videos before buying. I had to force myself to finish the game BECAUSE i paid full price for it. I give them credit for experimenting with the whole sticker mechanic. It just didn't work for me. I liked the overworld idea, ala SMB3/SMW. The music kept it from being a complete drag. If anything I feel it was a half baked game. I loved DreamTeam though. If anything they should get back to the originality of PM:TYD and M&L: SuperStar Saga. They had a lot of original locales and characters and the battle systems were great.
