It’s been about a month here that I can’t play MK8 online. Whenever I try to play online it says server is undergoing maintenance. Anybody else seeing this? Is it known? Sorry but I couldn’t find anything about it in this forum.
I saw this in Nintendo’s official website, which implies there are still issues, but come on it’s been a whole month!

@bruneves yeah I don’t know the whole story, but apparently several 3DS and Wii U games were open to being hacked through malware or whatever, so Nintendo updated Mario Kart 7 and took Splatoon and MK8 offline so they could fix the games and make them safer. Or something.

Pretty much this. here's a news story Nintendo Life posted about it.. The Wii U version is down until they can fix these vulnerability, which allows hackers to take control of other target Wii Us by simply connecting online.

Thanks @sunsy and @thebigblue. I was hoping the patch wouldn’t take Nintendo more than a few days to be released. This now over a month wait makes me wonder if 1. there will ever be something released; 2. if Nintendo will offer some sort of compensation; 3. Nintendo will say it was time to retire online play in a 10 year old platform and ask users to migrate to a newer console.
@bruneves I think it will be back online once it's patched up, normally Nintendo announces when something is discontinued anyway (example, when Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection shut down). Same with Splatoon. Even though I can play Splatoon 2, I still want to play Splatoon 1 online again. It was still being played last time I played it.
Fortunately, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is pretty much the same game, at least it's an option if someone with a Wii U decide to upgrade to a Switch. Only real downside is buying the game again.
