I'm not sure if I'm getting it. Partly because of my understandable fear of being destroyed and humiliated by Bad Kitty, the ultimate Mario Kart player, and partly because Smash Brothers comes out too soon and will completely eclipse all thoughts of Mario Kart for me. But it would be the first Mario Kart I don't get, so we'll see if I retain my resolve.
Edit: Who hacked my account? I would never say these things. I am obviously the best at Mario Kart but have just been holding back (a lot).
On battle mode: Being able to run the timer down is a huge problem in games (it's a big reason behind banning some otherwise fun stages in Smash Brothers tournaments). Games are designed to promote interaction, but what you describe is stalling and non-interaction. I haven't played it myself and want to, but it sounds like the complete opposite of good game design.
You can't hide from me coward!
You will get it and you will accept your place an be humiliated!
Fear my cuteness~!
Tis fine though if you can't, I'll be getting brawl as well so you can die there. :3 Also I didn't hack your account I only hack LJM's as you will see. >:3
We must exchange friend codes.
because we must race together

And can you go a little faster?!
Why do people dislike the Koopalings so much?? To me they are very welcome to the roster and bring some much needed character. Granted it is a shame to have some of the popular characters absent..... but hopefully they will be added with future dlc.
I'm standing up for the Koopalings haha, they are a big part of the Mario and Mushroom Kingdoms history.

The inclusion of coins as items has really started to grow on me as I've played more.
I do miss being able to drop bananas around everywhere, but it adds some real suspense to the game when you're in first place and approach an item box, desperately looking for something to defend yourself with... then when the coin comes up, anxiously looking at the GamePad while you await your fate.
Still loving this game, but the online has been real finicky with me. The first time I tried I had no problem and was playing with others right away. After that, though, I had maybe a dozen failed connection attempts that result in error codes. My brother and I tried fixing it, looking up the error codes and possible fixes, but we got nowhere. Then all of a sudden I tried again and it worked. What is this nonsense? I love playing online, but if I can't most of the time it gets annoying.
I've been hearing a lot of hate about the battle mode - does no one like it at all? Yes it's a bit lazy and the courses are stupidly big, but I've still had a huge amount of fun with it and three other players. Take my advice, turn off CPUs. If you grew up with Mario Kart 64 you'll thank me.
Also, that ghost thing is overpowered and silly, perhaps if you were still visible and only got very basic items it would be better, but I still want to see the return of the mini bomb kart - that setup was a babe.
Just discovered something pretty interesting and not that obvious - if you fly into the sign above the finish line with a glider, instead of just stopping you in its tracks (a la Mario Kart 7) it'll swing back and make a fantastic sound.
Anyone else been struggling with getting consistent speed starts at the beginning of each race? Maybe it's just me but I'm still trying to figure the timing out. It's cool how the kart setup and driver weight plays a part in this.

Try and hit the accelerator just as the '2' stops moving. As the Gamexplain video states (love that channel by the way), try and react to its movement stopping rather than anticipating it, or you'll just stall.

Yea, I found it tough first as well. But if you get the hang out of it, it's actually no problem anymore.
I have the feeling if you don't press the button exactly where you have to press it, you won't get much boost out of it.
It's a matter of milliseconds I guess.
Edit: Try to look at the lights. As he said in the video. As soon as the second light show up.
This help was implemented on purpose. The second light appearance doesn't match with the countdown. Soo..
Ah excellent, thanks alot for the help @DreamyViridi and @AlexOlney. I should probably start using Gamexplain abit more in future I think I've been stuck in my timing ways with the previous Wii and 7 versions. Thanks again!
I haven't seen or heard this be mentioned anywhere so I'm going to mention it here. When you honk your horn in MK8, nearby characters (humans and cpus) will jump a bit.
Cheers @BlueBlurlxM I'll give it a good try from now on. Yea, I'm sure that once you get the hang if it will feel like second nature. What has got me is where I get a small burst, other times a slightly longer burst.... and other times nothing at all haha. Thanks pal

Ok so I derped out on the free game promotion. Didn't realise I had to register the code that appeared on the eShop screen on Club Nintendo as a separate product to the Mario Kart survey that automatically pops up! I was waiting for Club Nintendo to give me a prompt lol. Sure enough when I entered the code I instantly got my free game.
As some others have been saying, I actually really like the coins. I know this is going to be shame on me, but I've only played the SNES and N64 Mario Karts, so I'm actually kind of used to the coins from the SNES - apparently they haven't been around for awhile though?
Anyway, I had a question - you know how in Mario Kart 64 you could hop during a power slide and change directions while keeping the same slide going? I've been trying to do that, and I'm fairly sure you can't anymore. Can anyone confirm? Thanks!

As far as I'm aware, that's not longer possible. Probably to try and tone down on people abusing chicanes for massive boosts.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
