I'm not sure if I'm getting it. Partly because of my understandable fear of being destroyed and humiliated by Bad Kitty, the ultimate Mario Kart player, and partly because Smash Brothers comes out too soon and will completely eclipse all thoughts of Mario Kart for me. But it would be the first Mario Kart I don't get, so we'll see if I retain my resolve.
Edit: Who hacked my account? I would never say these things. I am obviously the best at Mario Kart but have just been holding back (a lot).
On battle mode: Being able to run the timer down is a huge problem in games (it's a big reason behind banning some otherwise fun stages in Smash Brothers tournaments). Games are designed to promote interaction, but what you describe is stalling and non-interaction. I haven't played it myself and want to, but it sounds like the complete opposite of good game design.

I really don't understand the hate for this game. Its everything I wanted in Mario kart Wii, finally a good console Mario kart. Yet people are complaining, saying it isn't worth the money, mk7 was better and the track design is bad?! Like how sorry? Have you been playing Mario kart Wii instead? BTW this isn't on this forum
I feel the opposite, at least from the demo I played. Mario Kart Wii is my favorite in the series. I loved the bike mechanics, the track design was amazing (as it is in MK8 as well), and the characters weren't horrible (seriously, the Koopalings are a relic of the past and should stay that way, I'd much rather have Bowser Jr., Birdo, Funky Kong, King Boo, and Diddy Kong.)
I know it's not right to judge from a demo, but considering how badly I got burned buying Double Dash at full price back when it came out (easily the worst EAD game I've ever played), I'm going to wait until MK8 comes on sale.
If you liked Mario Kart Wii, you'll like this one. Other than the underwater and gliding mechanics, it's mostly similar to that game. There is, unfortunately, a lack of Wii retro courses as there are only two when 64 has four and Wii is more recent. I disagree with you about the Koopalings. I want the Koopalings in the game but all the characters you mentioned should have been in the game as well.
Right now, the tournaments are having a slow start since not many people have the game. I've seen people on Mario Kart 8 threads saying they're saving up for the game. So if you guys can, spread the word as much as you can. I was lucky enough that PKSparkxx (youtuber) added me when he was online adding people on his friend list. I'm gonna try to get some help from him.

The game is really good. Lots of fun and enough new things to keep you entertained. BUT! My son tried to play today online for the first time and, lo and behold - we came across a cheating player. We were second for a whole race and shot three red shells (we could even see him). Shells broke on impact but he continued to drive without even slowing down. Didn't have any item on him that would shield him either. Pretty lame for a game that cost over 70 dollars!!!! What is Nintendo going to do about that, I wonder?!?!?
Anyone else find it difficult to play with motion controls? I'm probably just used to playing with the Gamepad, but it looks like it's harder to control.

That was lag on your or his part. I don't think Nintendo can do anything about that.
