NSMB, DKC, Yoshi's Wooly World, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, honestly where are the great open 3D Wii U games. Am I missing something, or are thre very few?
Mario Kart 8, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Splatoon, Wind Waker, Zelda U, Starfox, if you want to balance it with 1st/2nd party only.
SM3DW and Captain Toad::TT are both 3D but not that open world.

Concerning platformers, yes, they are too 2D focused. But so are all other developers on other systems. Hardly any 3D platformers have been made in the past 5 years. I really hope the next platformer Nintendo announces is 3D again.
I think the whole industry is at the moment. The fashion of 2D gaming which happened either because of OR just in sync with New Super Mario Bros has been seized upon by a whole host of developers because it's a lot cheaper and easier to make 2D games (in general, I'm sure there are exceptions).
Btw, there's a spelling mistake in your title.
Yes, there is a dearth of 3D games… platformers, that is.
There's Armillo, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom, Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 1&2, Super Mario 3D World, and that Monster High game. Is that all of them? Are the Lego games platformers?

As far as I'm aware, only Super Mario 3D World is a Nintendo game.
I agree about them being too focused on 2D gameplay for platformers. But if they decide to do a 2D Metroid I certainly won't be upset.
I think it'd be more accurate to say they're more addicted to linearity in their games ever since Galaxy. It was "3D" but you could only walk one direction to get to the goal. Same thing with 3D Land/World and all their 2D games. They really need to open up a bit more.
Problem is making a good 3D platformer that is not too easy.
All the tricks in 3D World (Backflip / spin jump / long jump). If they were actually needed throughout the game would have made it much better. (Don't bother with the collectables).
At least in Lost World to play it properly you need to understand what happens and what to do in all contexts. (The Wisps are bad in it though).
Anything with a learning curve is going to end up being reviewed badly though so that is a problem. Skill one with one 2D game usually carries over but 3D each one is quite different.
For me a platformer that you cannot play at max speed is not interesting. (No interested in slow easy go through the level like looking for a needle in a haystack type games).

No they're not too focused on 2D but I think they're not focused enough on 'realistic' games.
By 'realistic' I mean unrealistic arcade games with decent semi-realistic graphics like 1080 Snowboarding, Waverace and Super Tennis or games set on Earth like Eternal Darkness and Geist. I think if they've no plans for their in-house teams to make any of those games they should commission a load of HD remakes from competent 3rd parties. Waverace and 1080 would make excellent online games.
I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.
Yeah, there are waaaaaaaaaaay too many 2D platformers nowadays, they need to make some 3D platformers again. What they really need to bring back are collectathon platformers, there's too few of those and they were some of the funnest games this industry has every made.
collectathon platformers are probably the only genre I can think of with no redeeming features. (There is not a single one I like ever - any other genre that I would say I generally don't like i can think of a counter example which I do other than this one).

that is because you are a terrible human being
All human beings are by nature of being human.
The only split is between those who admit it and those who lie to themselves and don't.

I would like to see another one of those. They had all the jumping around of their predecessors while also letting you explore big 3D areas.
I miss basic things like hub worlds with stuff to do in them.
