I recently got a new job and with the extra cash,on Saturday I bought a Premium Wii U with Nintendo Land. I also bought Super Mario 3d land U as well!!
I sat on the fence since launch, Ive bought every other Nintendo console/handheld, but waited for the price to come down and better games to arrive (enjoying my 3ds and all the brilliant games on that in the meantime) I'm thinking of buying New super Mario Bros U and Rayman legends, do you guys have any game recommendations?
Get donkey kong over NSMBU, it's pretty dull. Wind Waker HD and Sonic lost world are pretty good too. although I would keep some money for mariokart and smash bros...

Get a Wii U Pro Controller. Stock up on CC Pros for the kids to abuse. Purchase Donkey Kong Count: TF and Pikmin 3 ASAP. Other games to consider include The Wonderful 101, NFS: Most Wanted U, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution DC. Highly recommended.
For the kids, look into Lego City U, Skylanders Swap Force, and Scribblenauts Unlimited. Wii Fit U is also an extremely effective way to entertain the kids on a rainy day. NSMU is also an excellent game for kids (boost mode is great for helping them out and vice versa, coin mode is good for competitive multi among themselves).
Finally, don't miss out on the VC gems, like Earthbound, Advance Wars, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga if have not played them before.

But yeah, I have a 5 year old and some of the best parts of my week are when he and I play Wii. He has recently become aware of the Wii U, so if he wants it that'll probably be what finally gets me to buy it.
I didnt buy a PS4 as im too old/mature for C.O.D!! Plus ive got 3 young children, so it makes sense!!!
Don't get Mario U, get Donkey kong instead. DK is 100x better than Mario U graphically and gameplay wise. I'm a big mario platform fan but DK is throwing it into the bin. If you're looking to dump your time, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is the game.... IMO best game on the Wii U right now

Yeah, time has flown by quickly but I am sure you know how that goes with your 5 year old son! And I hope he does help motivate you to get a Wii U and I'll see you on Mario Kart track sometime.
