Yeah. I saw the same thing again on an IGN discussion about the XBOne launch that didn't involve any of the more regular Nintendo contributors. Asking what they did at launch Daemon Hatfield (who used to be part of the Nintendo "team" but now isn't) mentioned that he got a Wii U that day. Seen it also on twitter quite a bit and in particular over Super Mario 3D World.
Maybe I'm looking for it but I have seen quite a lot of it from people you wouldn't typically call "Nintendo fanboys". So there's a bit of a shift going on I think.
Random back-on-topic-ness. I watch a weekly PC hardware enthusiast live-stream (wait it out, I'm getting there) and the inevitable question was brought up. If your PC was taken away from you and you were forced to pick between PS4 and XBOne what would you get? Much to the shock of the person asking the question the other two people instantly said Wii U. The chat exploded with WiiU+PC just like it once would have for Wii60. Three months ago that would have been unheard of on this particular stream.
It's because many PC gamers feel that they are the Master Race and they honestly can't fathom any reason why anyone would buy a PS4 or XBO to play AAA cross-platform titles that will eventually get ported to PC.
As for the topic at hand, Wii U sales aren't amazing, but they're respectable. It's complete bollocks to call Wii U a flop at this point. If these numbers prove to be consistent throughout the generation, the phrase used to describe its performance would be "modest commercial success."
