I usually don't use save states for games that already have a save system because I want to play those games how they were originally intended to be played. Though, I will use save states for older games that don't have their own save system implemented, like Super Mario Bros. or Mega Man.

I try not to use them in a level, but I remember a friend and I were taking turns playing Super Mario Bros. 3. It was such a fun time because we kept cracking up at how close we'd get but then die. She decided "Screw this!" and made save states multiple times mid-level, and I kept saying "Really? Woooooow!" and we laughed and laughed. It was a fun time.

Yeah, if it's a game I've already played through I have no issues spamming save states to get me through it. Recently played through Mario 3 on VC, which I finished on Mario All Stars Wii version 5 years ago. I wanted to play through again pre-Mario Maker but I couldn't have coped without save states as that game is TOUGH.

I think they're a very good thing, recently when playing through Banjo Kazooie on Rare Replay I cursed the decision that was made to not give it save states, Grunty's Furnace Fun and the final boss are incredibly punishing.

...I forget they even exist sometimes. I even stopped using them in Earthbound way back on the emulator. lol (PC's, not Wii U's)

Not usually but I abused the heck out of them on Mega Man on the Mega Man Legacy Collection on PS4.

I'm far too old to not be using save states!

Gaming Since The 70's!

I still haven't beaten Zelda II without them... On the Wii I got a bunch of lives before trying to make it to the Great Temple, but I lost them all before I reached it and kind of gave up after that. Once I got the ambassador version on 3DS I finally beat it by using save states to make it through.
Other than that I don't really use them, although I did use it to help with arena abuse in FE7.

I could see myself using them if the game is unplayably frustrating to see to the end otherwise. I'm not against them in any way though. I think you should play the game however is most fun to you; I just don't really play that many retro platformers or other stuff that would require them. On the VC, I mostly just play NES Open.

I used save states when I was playing Mario Tennis (GBC). The controls on the GBA sequel were much more fluid, while the originals made me want to throw my 3DS across the room... Since I already had paid for it, I decided to use the save states when it got terribly frustrating. I swear, controls didn't seem that terrible on my GBC... or maybe my memories have rose tinted glasses.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

No. I like to play games the way they were intended to to begin with. Anything else equals the game not being worth getting through, e.g. a Ninja Gaiden run with save states is a poor joke.

I use save states mostly for games that are immensely frustrating without them (Zelda II, for example) and games that don't technically have a save system to begin with.

Currently playing: Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake (Switch), Hades (Switch)
