The thing is it's not free content, Amiibo are like $12+ and they do nothing unless you spend $180 on several specific titles, in which case they unlock tiny niggling cosmetic DLC. Amiibo are being sold as interactive statues, but they don't do anything, so they're just static action figures. For 3 minute demos... why even waste your breath?

So you'd rather them not release this thing at all then? Or is your problem with the fact that Amiibo exists?

I don't see this as a "you must get this thing or you're missing out" and it's the same with all of the Amiibo unlocks so far. As you said, it's not at all essential and it's not a lot of content. It's just a lot of little extras that you can play around with if you happen to already have some Amiibo. And I'm already buying the Amiibo because they're nice figurines, I'm already buying the games because I was going to anyway. Why is just one more little Amiibo unlock a bad thing?

This piecemeal stuff is just annoying. Just release a amiibo-centric game and be done with it. Leave all the other games intact.

So far, nothing really substantial or important is being locked behind amiibo. Just extra costumes and skins. If they start locking important game modes, or story elements behind amiibo, then yeah, that sucks, but that isn't the case so far. And let's hope it never becomes the case.

I'm not even that fussed about the content being gated by plastic toys, because it's all worthless. In 2015 there are tons of games, so I don't give two aviating expletives about NPC characters in a local multiplayer game, Mario Kart costumes, or especially lame Mario Party 10 modes.

The problem I see is: why buy amiibo? The only Amiibo I see as worthwhile is Link for the unlockable weapon in Hyrule Warriors, as that's a piece of worthwhile content if you like HW. Maybe the Fire Emblem figures too, but eww, Codename Steam. After getting home from the store with your brand new plastic figure I don't see any obvious, significant use for it. I just don't find amiibo usage spreadsheets to be all that fun.

@Haru17
If you think it's that crap then don't buy into it. You don't have to go on an elaborate whine every time someone makes content for people other than you. Nintendo is selling these figurines to suckers like me who are into stupid little figurines. And for "idiots" like myself the little unlocks here and there are a cool little extra. I got Megaman for example because it's Megaman and Megaman is awesome. The thing works with nothing other than Smash but I don't really care because he looks awesome. Then today? Megaman suit in Mario Kart 8.

If you don't like the figurine? Then it's a lot of money for a stupid bit of cosmetic DLC. If you're into the figurine? It's a decent price for a figurine and a little bit of fan-service for your trouble.

I did not call you an 'idiot' because I don't do ad hominem.

Anyway, Nintendo has always been about value, at least until the era of wii music. So I want them to be selling worthwhile things regardless of the fan service. I mean, hell, they already made Nintendoland and Mii Plaza, just release a free to play version that unlocks minigames depending on your amiibo. At least that'd be something >3min(9).

It sounds like you want Amiibo limited to 1 game (like Skylanders ot Disney Infinity) or just 1 game to make your amiibo "worth the price." The Amiibo strategy seems to be the opposite, 1 figure will work across multiple games and unlock extras rather than be mandatory. If you don't feel those extras are worth it then don't buy Amiibo. This 3 minute demo thing is just a way to sell VC games. It really isn't targeted to people already buying the games but targeted to people buying the figures without knowing about the classic games. I don't think there will ever be 1 game that makes an Amiibo "worth it" but the collection of uses spread across multiple games is what will make it "worth it" for some/most.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Even if they did nothing at all, $13 for a figurine isn't a bad value.

This isn't about whether amiibo are worth it for me or not; they're not, I have enough physical things already. I'm speaking on the ethics of these products.

That's exactly what annoys me about this! Everything about amiibo seems to just lead into buying another game or another amiibo. It's this obnoxious money sink that never ends. It all just feels so manipulative to me.

Does tsudere even apply to men? I thought it was a gendered term.

I don't thing I'd use the word "outdated" but Nintendo's basically making the same types of games they've always made and the same types of games everybody made prior to the PlayStation era. That is, games that don't have in depth stories (or stories at all really), cut scenes, graphics that try to be realistic, mature themes, etc. Nintendo fans write those things off as not being important but like it or not those things are important to lots of gamers (in the west at least) and its a big reason why Nintendo isn't on top anymore. I consider myself a big Nintendo fan but I also like those games with stories, cut scenes, realistic graphics, mature themes, etc. It's why I just bought a PS4.

I agree with this except for the fact that Nintendo did have those more realistic and narrative-themed games, they kinda just stopped making them, Metroid Prime and Paper Mario in particular. I don't have a problem with all of the 2D platformers and storyless games, but I can't care about gaming if that's all it offered. I first got a gamecube for Super Mario Sunshine's complex gameplay and got hooked on the Zelda Collector's Edition disc for the N64 Zeldas' complex gameplay and interesting narrative.

Nintendo's problem right now is balance. First party wise they have way too many simple, local coop, and narrative-devoid games and not enough of the more involved titles. Stuff like Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, Mario 3D World, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate look to be the only deep games on the system, and only one of them really offers any sort of involved narrative.

U-urusei! It's not like I wanted to buy you, Amiibo-kun! I just had to pick up some other things and had some money left over, BAKA!

(except I actually haven't bought any amiibo)

Edit: No joke, Nintendo literally just sent an amiibo ad to me. Don't push me, you Sticker Starring fools!

Not to worry. That amiibo is still perfectly functional and can play 3 minute VC demos just fine.

My problem with current-day Nintendo is that you have to be interested in the mascots. Back in the '90s, pretty much any gamer would be interested in Nintendo because that's where you would find some of the very best games. Over the past couple of years though, I find they're basing their appeal on amiibo figures and DLC. It feels like every Nintendo Direct has loads of time dedicated to new fighters in Smash Bros and new courses in Mario Kart.

Nintendo is starting to feel more like a fans' thing rather than a gamers' thing.
