It's nice that they drop a couple dollars off the price for those who bought Sketchpad, but I'm fairly certain I spent more than $4 on that software...
Does anyone know if there's a retail version of Art Academy in Europe? I thought it was only NoA who made it eShop-only, but I can't find it for preorders in my usual stores. And it's released soon!

Yes the retail version of Art Academy is available in europe thankfully. I think u can find it in Aamazon last I checked or any major store but I'm not sure if they're taking any pre-orders.
It looks pretty good so far. I tried it yesterday and tried the first lesson: a tomato on pastels. Of course, it was the first day for most people, so when I looked at the Miiverse uploads screen all I saw was a sea of tomatoes. I decided not to add yet another tomato to the lot.
I have a question: wasn't the game advertised to have 30 lessons? The beginner's, advanced and tools lessons together add up to just 16. Anybody know what happened to the rest? Apologies for asking this again: I asked this question on the eShop forum and was redirected here. Thanks a bunch!
Sorry, my mistake, I misread the menus. I was counting pages, not lessons, in the lesson "book". Each page could have more than one lesson. 1 intro, 12 beginner's, 12 advanced and 5 tools lessons add up to 30. Nice job on the bonsai tree. Thanks.
Well, your lilies look a whole lot better than mine. Charcoal is not my thing, I guess.
I'm glad the gamepad comes with a stylus. There was some discussion a while ago questioning whether we needed a stylus with the Wii U, but I think Art Academy proves that it can come useful. Unfortunately, I found it a little too small for my hand. I dropped by Staples to look for an alternative stylus, but was dismayed to find only fat, blunt ones. It's a side effect of capacitive touchscreens dominating the market: most such touchscreens can't use an accurate stylus. I know Nintendo sells a pen-size stylus with their screen protector kit, but it looked cheap. I ended up searching for a Parker pen stylus refill on ebay. This is like a ball pen refill, but with a plastic tip and no ink. This transformed my pen into a nice, comfortable Gamepad stylus.
It can! Art Academy is not just a drawing program; it has lessons from beginner to advanced. The main lessons guide you step-by-step (mini-lessons are tougher since they don't hold your hand as much) and Vince the instructor gives you all sorts of advice on how to transition to drawing/painting in real life.
Here is the pastel tool lesson, Lesson 3 (strawberry), and lesson 3 mini-lesson (lemon):
I suspect off TV play would be tricky for lessons. Most of the action is indeed shown on the Gamepad. But when you are actually doing the drawing/sketching, the art subject is displayed on the TV. For example, you would be doing a charcoal sketch of a pair of lilies on the Gamepad while using the full color photo of the lilies on the TV as a guide. You can switch the image on the TV, but I did not see any option to show the TV reference image on the Gamepad.
