Yes you are wrong. The amiibo functions exactly the same as Skylander/Disney Infinity figures. The only difference is we will not need a portal for the figures because the Wii U gamepad itself is the portal (NFC sensor). If the amiibos became a huge success, eventually we may get a full game that will only function with amiibos, only time will tell.

You'll probably see me lining up in Toy'R'Us along with 5 year old kids to compete for a Pikachu figure. And I'll be darn proud of it.

they look great, I'll probably get one just for the heck of it(not into collecting figures, but those look great and are somewhat functional too, unless they scrap the 3DS support idea, then it'll be just a useless pretty toy to put on a nice spot in my room)

They are basically physical clutter that unlock on disk dlc simple as that. (All the problems people have with on disk dlc anyway should apply to this. Somehow they don't seem to the same extent though).

And the first lot is a set of 30 So at Skylanders Prices - Shedloads. (More than every main Nintendo retail game this year in total).

I am really looking forward to their Smash Bros ability. A fighter that will grow and adapt against you. Sounds like a perfect training partner.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

The real question I have isn't how these will sell (I honestly have no idea), but how these will be used. My biggest question is that Nintendo said these will be useable with multiple games. Yet these first sets of these seem to be all Smash Bros. based (Smash symbol on stand, Design is from smash bros). So will I be able to use the Smash Mario figure from this first series in a future Mario installment, our will I have to buy a whole new Mario figure. While I'm not against more figures of the same character in different poses later on,I would like to be able to use each of these individual figures in more than one game.

How are they exactly like Skylanders/Disney Infinity? For those games, if you want to play as a certain character, you need to buy the figurine to gain access to them. For Smash Bros, these figurines dont unlock any characters. Mega Man will be playable in the game regardless of whether or not you buy the toy of him.

Are you sure that you know what exactly these things do?

you should just hope it's not like that thing of saving data in the Wii remotes or you'll lose everything from a game if you want to use it for another! XD

@unrandomsam If all on-disc DLC comes with an awesome looking figure, no one is going be complaining. At least not me

Also, Nintendo themselves already said that amiibo will not be used to unlock characters/stages. They will be entirely optional. Although I do see your point in being a "on disc DLC", it is't the same dung that Crapcom pulled. Not yet anyways.

Whoa, seriously! I didn't know it worked that way.I think the only game I have that uses that function in Animal Crossing and I never even used it.

In any game? Also do you have a link for that? I am interested in finding out more about Amiibo

Yes, because they function similarly to other figures like Infinity or Skylanders. How the game uses them however is still up in the air

Again....the figures in Skylanders need to be purchased if you want to play as that character in the game. In Smash Bros, all the characters are in the game already, i.e. you don't need to buy the Mario figurine to unlock him as a playable character. That sounds like the complete opposite of Skylanders to me.

Does anyone here actually know what these things do? If not, why the excitement? So far in this thread I have seen them described as being the same as Skylanders, flashdrives, things that unlock on the disc DLC, usage undetermined, etc. Seems to me Nintendo is releasing another poorly described and confusingly marketed product!

in smash they'll be a special AI that adapts to you as you play with it, pretty neat for anyone that isn't able to play with other people for some reason and still awesome for those who can.

@Beetlejuice I'll do my best to try to explain bear with me though for I have not played Skylanders or Disney Infinity.
From what I have read they basically are the equivalent to Skylanders and Disney figurines but instead of just working on one game they'll be able to work on any Wii U game Nintendo chooses (even the 3DS). They'll of course have different features for each game like in smash they let you create your own personalized AI character for other players to fight.
In Skylanders, the game is programmed to make characters appear when you use the figurines. Amiibo can do that too if Nintendo makes a game that's programmed to make new characters appear when the figurines are used.

Sigh. Something cannot be the 'equivalent' to something else while not having any of the same functionality. Ok listen folks Skylanders and Disney Infinity require you to buy toys in order to UNLOCK characters and features. Nintendo has stated they will NOT be using the toys to unlock anything. So they are not the same. Yes, they are toys that use NFC technology but that's where the comparisons end.

I've thought it's odd that Nintendo hasn't had more of a presence in the toy market for a long time. Characters such as Link and Samus have always been relegated to $100+ figures I can never afford, while Fox and Pit have never gotten proper modern toy renditions that I've ever seen. It's a bummer we're finally getting them, but they have to come with this rather pointless tech inside which will probably raise the price quite a bit.

Hasn't the price already been confirmed to be in between Skylanders and DI figurines. Rumored pirce is 12.99 as far as I can recall.

And Amiibo is very much like Skylanders. In Skylanders you buy characters, level them up, teach them different moves and that's exactlly the same with the SSB Amiibo. The Amiibo you buy will level up, get custom movesets and adapts to your fighting style. The only difference is that Skylanders are forced on you if you want to play, Amiibo is completly optional. It expands upon the things in Smash and allows you to create your a personal fighter to train with and battle your friends.

Everything can change, but I'm never changing who I am

To be fair that's the games that differ, not the toys.

The tech in the Amiibos are the exact same as in any Skylanders or Disney Infinity toy, hence, they're the same since they have the same feature set. Amiibos can be used for the exact same purpose as any Skylanders or DI toys (vice versa), we just haven't seen a game from Nintendo that utilize them in that specific way.. Yet.

I don't get why people are complaining that Amiibo will be entirely optional.
I'd rather buy a pretty toy because I want it than being forced to get it if I want to unlock things in a game.

We aren't talking about tech, we are talking about usage.

Skylanders are popular because they are like selling crack to kids. You wanna play as the shark guy?? You gotta buy the toy! Plus, the 'toys' also have playlets and can be used outside the game as...well...toys,

Amiibo? So far they sound totally useless. Use it to play against a special AI character?? Really? You think 7-12 year old kids will be clamouring for something like that? As well, as toys, the figurines suck. They are basically little statues that can just sit on a shelf when not being used. Not at all like a Skylanders figure that can be played with both using the game and with playsets.
