If Super Mario world 2 can be considered mainstream, then I would say Yoshi's Island Definitely one of the Super Nintendo's Best platformers ever. SMW comes close and I'm 19.
Super mario 64, and mario bros 3 in the 2d platform, 22 years old
3DS Friend Code : 5327-0890-4688 Mario Kart 7 / Street Fighter / Resident Evil Revelations / Super Mario 3d Land/ Pilot Wings/ Tales of The Abyss/ Zelda OoT/ Feel free to add my 3DS FC
Super Mario Bros 3 will always be my favorite. THeres just something about the level designs and the all the suits that Super Mario World just couldnt match. Dont get me wrong Super Mario World comes in a close second but I have always liked 3 the best. Oh and I am 33.

I'm 27, but I never owned any main series Mario games until I was about 17 (Super Mario World on GBA), and I still haven't played Lost Levels, 64, Sunshine, Super Princess Peach, New SMB DS or Wii, Galaxy 2, 3D Land, or any of the GameBoy Mario/Wario Land games after the first (outside of demo kiosks in the cases of NSMB Wii and 3D Land), although I have gotten and tried all the others thanks to the Wii and 3DS Virtual Consoles and Ambassador Program (still haven't gotten around to starting Wario Land 4, though).
Anyway, my favorite is actually the very first Super Mario Bros. for NES. Sure, it's a relic compared to many of the sequels, but it's aged very well. Galaxy's troublesome non-automatic camera ruined the experience for me, while most of the other 2D platforming Mario games I've tried get too difficult too quickly.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.
I'll never forget the first time I discovered the Special Star World area, was almost like unlocking a new game
I was four years old when I discovered it. And I literally just beat SMW again on the GBA. I have to say, if you don't use the trick, Tubular is the hardest level in the game. That or Way Cool.
