By Mario Game I mean the main series, i.e Mario Bros 1, 2 or 3, Super Mario World, Mario 64 etc (you get the idea)
I'm curious to know if most peoples favourite Mario Game is one that they grew up playing or if you've been a fan for 30 years or more and prefer the newer Galaxy games for example.
I'm 29 (soon to be 30) and I think my favourite will always be Super Mario World, i've completed it countless times over the years (all 96 levels) and it never gets boring. Dont get me wrong I love Mario 64 and Galaxy but SMW will always be a special game for me, mainly because the Super Nintendo was the first console the I owned.
Super Mario 64 is my favourite. I'm 17. So although this game is only 2 years younger than I am, it is still my favourite. I am really into retro gaming and although this is my favourite game, Gamecube is still my favourite console. Wierd, huh?
My favorite 2D game would be Super Mario Bros. 3, and 3D game would be a tie between the Galaxy games. To me the series are too different to chose an overall winner (though the variety in Galaxy 2 is amazing, and might just settle the battle).
I'm 19, and SMB3 was my first real Mario experience. However, I can't really say that's the reason it's my favorite. I feel that all the later 2D games have built on what SMB3 started, while the 3D games constantly have improved. So while NSMBW has more spectacular level design and variety than SMB3, gameplay as a whole hasn't improved, unlike the 3D games.
After contemplating this question I came to the conclusion that Super Mario World was the Mario game which I had the most enjoyment out of. Quite strange, because at first I didn't like that game when the SNES was released, I thought it looked too childish in comparison to my favorite Super Mario Bros. 3. That opinion changed rapid when actually playing the goddamn game!
Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and I'm 18 in three months and seven days so it's not that big of a deal, right?

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
i too have played every mario game and loved all of them some more, some a wee bit less. the one i one that surprised me was Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. i loved that game. i am 60 (before some of you faint at my advanced age, please remember that we were the ones who helped get the gaming industry off the ground and helped make it what it is today.)
