Does anyone know the reason for Super Mario RPG not being released in Europe? I'm kinda happy now that it's now on the VC for Wii U, but as a retro game collector I like to have the fysical copy of the game.... :/
I only guess possible reasons.
Didn't Nintendo of Europe release text-heavy games in at least English, French and German? (thus needed translations)
Combined with the game using the SA-1 expansion chip and that it was a fairly late release, perhaps it was deemed too costly for them?
@Don I don't really know but most games and game consoles in EU have English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch. I'm not sure if it's like that in the US, but yeah, that's how it is here.

If you look at the list of NA exclusives, it's a lot of JRPGs. I believe they just didn't sell well in EU. Plus with all of the languages they'd have to translate to, it would be a daunting task for them at the time. Good to know you guys can finally play it on the VC and repo carts.
@TechnoCharlie Generally games released in the US are English-only. You might find a game with an additional selection (like Donkey Kong Country 2 has a French option) but those are rare.
(Oddly enough, despite being released two months later than Europe, Zelda: The Minish Cap REMOVED the language menu from the EU release.)
@Don You're indeed correct! And now when I come to think of it, they are all RPG's. So yeah, it was probably because they had to translate the games :/

I think the only SNES RPGs released in EU were ActRaiser and the SoulBlazer trilogy, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Lufia II and Breath of Fire II (English-only, supposedly it was a somewhat rare release), Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore (which was never released in Japan).
Strangely enough, NoE themselves published Terranigma in Europe, the game was not released in America at all. The game is largely forgotten now, and it doesn't look like Square-Enix will ever rerelease it.
@Andyliini Okay, I've never heard about Terranigma, now when I looked it up, some people says it's one of the best RPGs ever?! And it was only released in EU?!?! I mean, I don't play that many RPG, but I can't believe that I haven't heard of it!
And BTW, I love your profile image, I love MJ!

Terranigma was released in Japan, Europe and Australia.
Enix America liked planned to publish it themselves in North America (along with possibly Tactics Ogre, Dragon Quest VI and Mystic Ark) but didn't before going on hiatus for about 5 years.
Reproductions carts of SMRPG exist now for the Pal consoles. Annoyingly priced quite high but understandbly i guess. Still not the same as owning the original version, and you can't even import a US copy and use a universal adapter as it won't work with this title.
