If cleaning the cartridge/console contacts doesn't help it, it might be something in the system.
It sounds like components go bad pretty regularly, though it's often a technical fix.
SMS Power has a lot of people that probably know a lot about repairing consoles, but again, it often turns into a problem requiring technical electronics knowledge.

Ended up being the capacitors! Pretty common problem for the console, I've read.
I got lucky and found a retro game store close-ish by, not long opened, who'd recently hired someone to do repairs. So I got it fixed and away I went - it's as glorious as I remember!
