Many gamers talk about Metroid as the same kind of franchise as Zelda or Mario. But it isn't.
The truth is, Metroid has always been a niche franchise with a solid following. But never the huge series that sold consoles. Super Metroid was praised by the media but wasn't an spectacular seller. That same year, Donkey Kong Country appeared and sold the same ammount of life sales of SM in less than 2 months.
and 1.5 is not bad if it was a 3d party but keep in mind that for a first party Nintendo game, is a success if it moves hardware. if it doesn't then is a mediocre success (like Wii music more recently). That may have been the reason why Nintendo wasn't that inspired to make an entry in a series that was never that popular in a console that was struggling for survive. They may have decided to give it another shot with Prime because of the hardware and its new gameplay focus and because they have more optimism in the Gamecube.
Of course Yokoi's death may have something to do with it but we are not sure about it.
