I am about to play the original legends of zelda(nes) for the first time. I heard that the game came with a map of the overworld, so is that something a first timer will need to use to know where to go?

To get a pure experience of playing Zelda 1, don't bother looking at any guides. Just set off and see how far you can get. You will die lots of times but don't let that put you off.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

thanks
I usually try to play without guides and wanted to get the experience that people got when they first play the game over 20 years ago So everyone that owned the game back in the day had access to that map? Another question, what is elimination mode?

Pretty much, the map was printed in the manual.
Elimination Mode (or Kill Mode in Japanese) is just the name of the function to erase a saved game.

However, the original map was blank in the northeast (including Level 5 entrance) and northwest (including Level 6 entrance) areas, with empty squares where you could draw it in yourself.

The map also had (or has, since i'm looking at mine now ) on the reverse side, maps to dungeon levels 1 and 2 (which point out where all the items are), as well as the names for all of the dungeon levels (the names descibe the shape of the maps) and what items are in each dungeon. There's also some general tips, an item checklist, an overworld enemies list and all that kind of stuff.

She-Ra is awesome. If you believe otherwise, you are clearly wrong.
Urban Champion is GLORIOUS.
