I've had trouble with older games myself. I'd recommend dualboot.

What's that and how do I get it?

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

Dualboot is where you install multiple operating systems on the same computer. For example, you could have Windows 98 on the same computer as Vista. Upon booting up your computer, you can choose which O/S to use.

Once you have Windows 98 installed, you can also install any game compatible with it, but isn't compatible with any other version of Windows (save for maybe 3.1 and 95). Note that the performance of your computer may notably affect the software's performance. Regardless, it's a good way to install older games on a modern computer.

I don't know how to set up older versions of Windows (my dad usually does that). Regardless, you don't have to "get" dualboot. Simply install a separate version of Windows.
