One I liked that was pretty tough, but enjoyable was Code Name: Viper by Capcom. Venture into South America to wage a war on drugs, rescue hostages, and discover a traitor? Hells yeah!
Let's attack aggressively, kupo! :D

I would have to say one game I for sure never hear mentioned and I love is Clash at Demonhead.
Oh those in the know, know about it. If you don't yet have this game get it now before the value on Clash At Demonhead takes off with a Billy ''Bang'' Blitz!
To blessed to be stressed.
80's music makes me feel fabulous.

Ghost Lion is a strange game.
You collect certain items which give you the ability to call spirits, which are temp party members. You summon them once for a single Dream (MP) cost, then they fight with you until they run out of Power (which is both the spirit's HP and MP in one). You have Courage and Dreams, which are your HP and MP. But leveling is fixed, because you actually have to find experience levels ("Fragments of Hope") in chests.
Definitely an uncommon game, because not only were RPGs a niche genre on the NES, but this one was released pretty late (1989 in Japan, but not until 1993 in the US). I find it strange that even the cart and the title screen disagree on the proper title of the game. "Ghost Lion" or "Legend of the Ghost Lion"?
That's the next NES game on my to-get list, assuming I can ever afford to get a like-new copy at Amazon (w/instructions & box). Does it live up to its stellar reputation, and what game is it comparable to (if any). It's one of those games I've meant to get for YEARS. With SNK's support of VC, I'm surprised it's not on there yet. Oh well, maybe it'll make it to Wii U's VC.
@KingMike
Kind of reminds me of the nameless ghost companions you have in Final Fantasy VI.
It's been a while since I played it (been holding out for the VC version since forever), so I can't accurately throw out a good comparison. As for living up, I sure thought it did. It had very fun gameplay overall, especially in the boss fights. Also had a surprisingly decent story for an NES game. Ny biggest gripe about the GBC version is that they changed the story.
I've heard people mention Athena, and most of the time it wasn't positive. (partly because infamous former EGM writer Sean Baby called it one of his least favorite 20 NES games ever, in an article that's been around since the '90s but still been popular).
Same can be said of Karnov (though unlike the English version, the Japanese version had a plot, which may or may not have improved the game). Though you do have to admit, the NES version's man-vs-dinosaur cover art was a bit cooler.

Call me an idiot or a masochist, but I always loved to hate Mighty Bomb Jack. What other game punishes you in a dungeon for being greedy and getting too much loot?
Man, that game was flippin hard.

Also, if the enemies trap you in a corner and you don't have enough coins to use the transformation power, all you can do is sit and wait for your unavoidable death.
Faxanadu. That was a awesome game. It was like Zelda II. The only thing I hated about it was the unforgiving difficulty and probably the fact the color pallete they chose is all dark brown colors. It seriously looks like a dog crapped on your TV then you tried wiping it off then it smeared everywhere. XD
