Dead Space. I went into this game expecting it to be another pseudo-horror generic M rated title number 1718. It wasn't, it was fantastic.
I went into the first Phoenix Wright confused as to why it was well liked but people kept saying "you had to get it!" so I was like "ok..." It ended up as one of my favorite series of the past decade.
I did not expect Rhythm Heaven to be my favorite game of 2009, especially with the competition that year. Arguably the same thing with Little King's Story and Retro Game Challenge.
Radiant Historia almost counts in that I didn't know it existed until a few weeks before it came out and didn't have a reason to care until a week or 2 before I bought it.
Pretty Much none of the games posted are sleeper hits.
Anyway Alpha Protocol fits the bill properly I guess.
Except we're talking about games that surprised us as an individual. Unless you can think of a better term for that, everyone's posts still stand, because they're talking about games that exceeded their own personal expectations and knowledge.
I don't really think there is a name for it. It could have been games you ignored, games you thought were going to be bad so you didn't buy it or try it until it was at a decent price, games that you didn't have an opinion on before you got it as a gift, all of it is subjective but none of those really are the same as what a sleeper hit is.
Regardless I do like this forum a lot, I like to hear about people's opinions of games they may have passed up, they may have a totally different opinion of it then when it was relevant.

Kirby air Ride.
I totally agree with Little King's Story and Rhythm Heaven. I'd probably also put Sin and Punishment 2 up there because of the near-arcade feel you got with the pointer controls.
I'd also have to add Pandora's Tower. Since it was coupled with Xenoblade and Last Story people began picking at it as the worst of the three (some even calling it bad). But I thought it was great after I finished it...twice...in a row.
I went into Borderlands 2 thinking it was another overhyped AAA title, but playing with friends online was a blast. So much so I hope "X" follows the same model of drop-in-drop-out gameplay.
...Can't say I agree about Dead Space though. Besides the awesome kinetic powers I thought it was a hyper generic modern RE knockoff (scary hallway, dim lights, MONSTER JUMPS OUT)...and it had plot holes, BAD ones.
For example, Napoleon Dynamite was a movie that got mixed positive reviews, and a very limited theatrical release after Sundance, but still grossed roughly half a billion dollars in the box office and has a huge cult following.
Ahem...give or take $450 million.
I love that movie, and it was indeed a big hit for only costing half a million to make. But you've been under the impression that it's made half a billion dollars? It grossed $46 million worldwide.
A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It's jolted by every pebble on the road.

No I totally wrote that wrong. I knew it was a sleeper hit movie, so I looked up the number but I saw an extra zero. I was going to change it but completely forgot to while I was watching the olympics. Also thought it might be funny to make people think that movie made that much since it's a pretty ridiculous film.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Darkness. Despite having it recommended to me, I didn't really have any expectations. I found it for a fiver in Blockbuster and certainly wouldn't have paid more than that, but I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. It had a good atmosphere and some interesting ideas.
Alan Wake is another. Purchased for £5 from Morisson's it has turned out to be one of my favourite games of the generation.
I still have mixed feelings from Alan Wake, but probably because I was playing on Normal difficulty. There was just too much combat which didn't add to anything. The plot and atmosphere were so good though, I'd gladly watch a cutscene movie if they made one.
always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)
Alan Wake is one of my favorite games for last gen and I can't call it a personal sleeper hit. I was a big x-files and Twin Peaks Gan and had an Original Xbox and loved the Max Payne games.
I should try it on Hardcore since I hear the way your supposed to play the game changes.
But yeah Alan Wake is dope and Quantum Break is the main reason I want an xbox one.
Alan Wake was a brilliant game and it just makes me all the more excited for anything Remedy does. I'm sure Quantum Break will be just as amazing.
Dead Island, despite how much everyone likes to complain about the game , I still like to jump on and play here and there. One of the best times I have had with playing online since I did online coop with a friend that lives half way across country and that I rarely get to see.

Legend of zelda series (i plan to play one of the games one day, which i tell myself as years go by)
Minecraft - i have no intention of ever playing this tbh
The last of us
Every console game right now - my tv is too small and high up to play computer games on it so i can't see anything, especially if the game uses a dark colour palette.
trauma center
cursed mountian
scribblenauts
vagrant story
crono cross
perfect dark
resident evil mercs (everybody panned this one so i skipped it. my girlfriend who doesn't follow reviews picked it up for me and i spilled 60 hours into it. nowhere near as bad as people say.)
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
I played the original on the Wii and it was just an okay game. I avoided this game at first because I thought it would be just like the original, but I played a demo in Wal-Mart and I really enjoyed it.
