@BlueOcean I knew all the tech stuff and what Xbox One offers what advantage, so that was a bit superfluous. I've been a long time Xbox owner across two generations...
EDIT:
And Xbox One games running best on Xbox One X is of course also quite logical, seeing as it has more memory and a better CPU. It's pretty much the difference between a medium and a more high end gaming rig, if you would be playing on PC.
By the way: if you're also into first person shooters, then you might want to look into an Original Xbox (yes, the one BEFORE the Xbox 360) game called Black. It was made by the original team behind the first Burnout arcade racing games on GameCube and PS2, and it features great gameplay, destructible environments and a good story. It's on sale in the market place right now, and it already looks and runs like a dream on the S, with 4x upscale and cleaned up graphics, and will run even better on the X, which displays the game with an 8x graphics upscale.
And speaking of arcade racers: the game has been mentioned before by me and several other people, in the last couple of pages, but if you like those as well, then Xbox 360 title Split Second is all but a must buy. Or you could try it out on Game Pass, if you have that. It's a really great arcade racer with lots of replay value.
@BlueOcean No, you didn't, but that's why I said that it's superfluous: what's the point in mentioning it to anyone who already knows all that? No offense meant or taken, though, just wondering and making an observation...
By the way: added an edit to the previous comment.
'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'
@ThanosReXXX Well, but that was not a private message, it's meant to be read by everyone. Next time I won't use the @ so you don't get offended by a "superfluous" reply or just shut up :S
@BlueOcean Like I said: I took no offense, but I meant none either. It was just a simple observation and me wondering why you would tell me that, and seeing as I was the only one addressed, I took it as directed at me, which really isn't all that unexpected.
Hope that clears the air, because far as I'm concerned, no harm was done.
And then there's still the edit bit to discuss, that I added to my previous comment, which might make for a more enjoyable bit of conversation...
@BlueOcean Cheers. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. A pro-tip: let the energy bar fill up completely before you use it, for the more crazy destruction events. I know it is tempting to try and use the smaller events sooner, to try and wipe out an opponent as soon as you have enough energy to do so, but the bigger events are just so much more fun, and not to mention: far more destructive, and able to completely transform the track you're driving on, which is part of where the replay value that I mentioned earlier, comes from.
By the way, just to try and pique your interest in that other game that I mentioned, here's a bit of gameplay from Black:
On a side note: if there's any specific genre that you like more than any other, I'd be more than happy to make some Xbox-specific suggestions. Or I could just make a short list of general suggestions, and tag some other people, so they might be persuaded to add some favorite titles of their own. Might give you access to some interesting titles that you haven't had the pleasure of playing before...
Even though I got Split/Second as a Game with Gold I haven't played it yet. I will follow your advice.
The best would be to start these recommendations with original Xbox games available on Xbox One, because there aren't many to be honest and it will be quick. Which ones do we guys recommend apart from Black? Is it 60 fps? It looks like it and seems to be somehow inspired by Goldeneye 007 (cinematic, missions...) I am intrigued now.
The original Xbox games that I'd recommend on Xbox One would be Conker Live & Reloaded, SSX 3 and The Sands of Time, but I haven't played SSX 3 yet so not sure. I remind (not you @ThanosReXXX, don't worry LOL) that all original Xbox games are X-enhanced at least the resolution (16x wow) and anti-aliasing. Resolution is 4x on Xbox One S (1080p). Performance is massively improved too. For instance, Grabbed by the Ghoulies is solid 60 fps on Xbox One and it was 30 fps on Xbox. It's another solid recommendation in my book in spite of being a hated game and it's included in Rare Replay.
@BlueOcean Surreal? Really? Hm... I wouldn't go that far. I've sometimes tried to come up with a general reason why online conversations can on occasion fly off the track so horribly, but I haven't been able to come up with a "one size fits all" answer yet. Sometimes, I do suspect that to some extent, it is also due to American vs European mindset and/or attitude, and then there's of course also regional differences, which occurs both in the Americas and in Europe, because much like how not all Americans are the same, so aren't all Europeans, so that might be part of why some things sometimes get lost in translation, regardless of whether or not people didn't intend to be offensive or insulting in the first place.
That in turn leads to FAR too much text to try and explain all that away, especially in the case of some people, like myself and our conversation partner NEStalgia...
For me, as a highly social person, it is sometimes hard to stomach, especially since I know that five minutes in a face to face conversation, with a good glass of whatever have you, would prevent any of these misunderstandings in the first place...
Oh, well. That's the curse of online conversations, I guess. No real universal way of knowing what person means what, and if they're honest or not, and don't even get me started on over-usage of emojis and abbreviations...
Anyway, I should probably stop here now, lest we get another text wall...
So, back to the games:
Yes, Black is 60fps.
As for the rest of the original Xbox backwards compatibility list:
Here's all of them, so that'll give you a first impression of what's available.
And if you see something you might like, but need and/or want some more info on, then just go to the actual page, and be sure to select the filter option to display only the original Xbox games: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/backward-compatibility
And of course, on that same page, you can also filter out Xbox 360 games that are compatible, and Xbox One X enhanced games, so all you might need is there.
As for personal preference on the original Xbox games: I'd have no trouble whatsoever recommending Crimson Skies, Ninja Gaiden Black, Jade Empire, Blinx - The Time Sweeper, Conker - Live & Reloaded, SSX3, Psychonauts, Dead to Rights, Prince of Persia and almost all of Star Wars games, except for the Battleground games, which don't hold up as well, but the more story-driven ones, such as the Knights of the Old Republic games, are pretty much must-haves for any Star Wars fan.
So, those are my original Xbox games recommendations, let's see what the others think, and go from there by also adding Xbox 360 favorites that are backwards compatible.
I forgot to mention that, from the original Xbox games, I also really like Breakdown. It's a ridiculously nice over the top action game, that really benefits from the better performance on the Xbox One.
@BlueOcean Well, that's all good to hear! And also, I didn't think you had a PS4, so that's surprising information. We do at least agree on the terrible controllers over there, and, for the record once and for all, no I don't have an anti-Microsoft bias, or pro-Sony bias. I like them both, and I get frustrated by them both in equal measure. Right now X1 is my "lead" non-Nintendo platform primarily due to the more sane way they handle a digital ecosystem and a feeling of better longevity of digital purchases, plus the controller.
I'll add that I did realize that the forum software's lack of a useful reply feature (the one it has is garbage) tends to make multi-point replies seem like they're jumping around more than they actually are, and are possibly confusing if you're reading a reply meant for someone else and didn't read the whole thread between the two participants prior. It occurred to me in another thread today, where two paragraphs may be addressing two different topics from the post being replied to, but without usable quotable blocks that can be split up, or threaded replies, it just becomes a big wall of text if you're not the original participant being replied to (and sometimes even if you are!)
Just...going forward....for some reason more than anyone else but thanos most conversations between you and I seem to have a starting point of misunderstanding. But with thanos additional textwalling between the two of us clears things up. So always just assume you're misunderstanding me from the start and the conversation will probably be smoother And nevermind the textwalls with Ryu...that's just how we roll in any conversation. Two people who have a lot of thought given to every topic and a long rapport of previous discussion tend to end up with massive text walls.
Also, I'm giggling, because you confused Thanos just now with the tagged reply the same exact way you did me in the Child of Light thread leading to our prior debacle. At least I know it's not just me!
@Thanosrexxx Regarding FH4 somehow both you and Blue really went in unexpected directions with that. It was just a general post praising the game and the strengths of both modes along with release day hype. Somehow it derailed into some big argument. RE: DF, I know they know what they're doing, but I also know that I can see for myself as noticeably different. Again maybe it's the supersampling that makes a big difference where they were testing on 4k output. I know you aren't big into gfx comparison and I think Blue's side conversation altered the scope of the original focus. There's a definite difference in the feel of visuals relating to foliage and terrain between the modes, and the night time lighting and reflections are definitely worth something without really giving up anything in the quality mode. The original point was that I liked both modes, the smoothness of 60fps is really nice, but the stunning visuals of quality mode is very stunning, and done well so that it doesn't feel like you're actually giving anything up for it. (And later I discovered that in driver/cockpit view 60fps actually does benefit a lot while in trailing view it doesn't really benefit much at all.)
That's all. It was a launch day hype praising of a well made game, and musings about the preferable mode and which gives more and gives up less.
The HDDs yeah, I'm kind of pretty miffed at that. It's definitely software and not an airflow/overheating type thing. So I have the two X's. Each of them has a 2TB Seagate HHD and a 6TB Toshiba X300, and all 4 are in identical Rosewill enclosures with a fan. The Seagates have been connected since May. The one Toshiba on one machine since June, and the other Toshiba on the other one I just bought 3 weeks ago when you bought your 4GB. All of them have been running without hitch (except for occasional weirdness solved by rebooting.) Until the OS update. The one system got the update the day before the other. That one started switching the HDDs constantly. Then the other one got the update the next day, and that one started switching the HDDs constantly. Worse, in the dozens of reboots and tests I've done, turning off updates, turning off remote downloads, I even tried turning off "turn HDDs off when XBox turns off" and apparently even in that mode that's supposed to leave them running 24/7, they still power down on their own eventually.....and something still keeps spinning them up every minute. Something about USB power state handling must have changed in the patch. And of course it does it mere weeks after I add another drive. The one machine did start behaving on its own the other day but after turning it on and using it (well finding out XBL licensing was down) yesterday it started power cycling the drives again. I've been killing them while still "on" but in sleep mode just so it doesn't hammer the spindle motors to death. But that gives me a pre-flight checklist just to use my XBox to plug everything back in every time I play.
My only options at this point are waiting for my "official" Seagate 8TB to come in and hope it's not as horribly slow as reviews say it is (it's an archive, not performance drive inside...Seagate cheated on pro reviews by sending enclosures with a performance drive inside.) nor as unreliable and loud, and see if that works better, or stop using instant-on which denies me auto updates of my hundreds of games, the OS, remote power on from my Surface to stream, and ability to push game downloads from my phone, plus no more suspending a running game which was a very important feature to me that now only XB won't have while PS and Switch do. Or manually unplugging the drives every startup/shutdown, but that still prevents updates. Maybe it's just the enclosure/USB controller....but I'd have to blind buy 4 of them, I just got these, and they worked fine until the 1018 OS update.
I did find tons of references to the problem going back a few years. One was replied to by someone that allegedly wrote part of the USB HDD implementation. It's outdated now but he said that there was no code to actually poll the HDDs or anything for updates when sleeping but that they had a ton of problems and when they specced "any HDD" they didn't expect all the variations they got (how does MS not know about all the USB variations? Back when they were under the Windows department??) and they left it disabled at first, and then when they enabled it they forced it to stay on 24/7 because the power state handling wasn't working as expected, and then they finally got the power state handling in but left it optional with a checkbox due to all the issues. BUT...it's been working for a good while so for it to suddenly work weird (and the checkbox no longer seems to do anything.... it behaves the same either way), is troublesome.
Your Windows install seems like a similar conundrum! At least that was actual bad data though so it's at least understandable, but the whole method to recover was even worse!
@NEStalgia Yeah, like I said to @BlueOcean, sometimes these online conversations go real bad, real quick, and more than likely with both parties involved none the wiser on what the hell just happened, so let's go with that idea, also safe in the knowledge (well, I am, at least... ) that these kinds of discussions can be tabled in less than 10 minutes in real life. That is simply because online communications lack a couple of critical parts, which in turn necessitates over-usage of text and smileys, to make our ACTUAL intent clear, which also on occasion has the opposite effect, leading to irritation and what not, and all of it unnecessary, which is the saddest part of it altogether...
As for my Windows problem: luckily it wasn't an install problem, otherwise, I'd definitely be busy for more than one day, seeing as I would have to reinstall a truckload of stuff, something that I would REALLY not like to do...
So, now that you've cleared the air with Blue, how about your opinion on recommendations for OG Xbox and Xbox 360 games on Xbox One?
@ThanosReXXX Sure, are you Dutch or just live in Netherlands? I was there this summer, really nice. I have a lot of 360 games already because of Games with Gold and Deals with Gold but I'm sure that there are some I don't even know about.
@BlueOcean I'm American, from California. I just live in the Netherlands (Amsterdam, to be exact). I got taken abroad by my parents when I was 9, and I'm 48 now. Got a Dutch passport, though, so I'm what they call a "naturalized" immigrant, over here...
Weather over here now is still considerably mild, but after today, things are expected to take a sharp dive into regular autumn weather, so I guess it'll be rain and storms, but we'll see...
@BlueOcean Or just financially inconvenient, at the moment. This past month, I've bought the digital version of Black (still have the original disc, but didn't want to keep that in the drive all the time to be able to play it on the Xbox One), paid for my avatar/account name change to make it the same across all consoles, bought a bunch of Wii U games on sale (six in total), bought a 4TB external hard drive for the Xbox One, bought a 1TB external hard drive for the Xbox 360, bought the deluxe Forza Horizon 2 bundle for Xbox One, and I've bought the Blizzard Mountain expansion for Forza Horizon 3, which was the only expansion that I didn't have yet, for that game.
All in all, I've spent several hundreds of euros, so time to pull the brakes and do some more useful things with what's left of last month's income...
'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'
I actually never played the Banjo games or Perfect Dark until their 360 release.
I played the living crap outta the Banjo games though. I'm missing just one achievement in Banjo-Kazooie (which I could probably get easily with an hour or so of dedication), and I mastered Tooie. Even got all the Stop N Swop II items (useless though they may now be).
I'm also one of the few people on this planet that actually likes Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts.
I still need to beat Perfect Dark though.
EDIT: Actually, 360 re-releases and Rare Replay provided me with my first playthroughs of many non-Nintendo IP Rare games.
Same here, I got all the achievements and items in Banjo-Tooie. Could it be that the only achievement that is left in Banjo-Kazooie is for completing all of Bottles's puzzles? Because that's my case. Nuts & Bolts is enjoyable once you accept that it's not a platforming game. You feel so good when you create a new vehicle that is more efficient. You can get really creative in this game, and that's the best thing about it. Perfect Dark is so cool.
@ThanosReXXX I edited the last comment. I will never forget my first time with Rare Replay playing remastered versions of my childhood games (N64) with the awesome elite controller in my hands and, most of all, trying to get used to the A B X Y different layout compared to most Nintendo consoles (B A Y X) which is quite confusing but at the end makes more sense on the Xbox controller. I think that Nintendo layout is backwards because in Japan they read from right to left.
There are enemies in Grabbed by the Ghoulies that require you to press the buttons that appear on screen very quickly, I don't know how I completed the game 100% because I grew up with the A and X buttons on the right and the B and Y buttons on the left. It is underrated but I suspect that it plays much better on Xbox One in 60 fps (at least the Rare Replay version) than on the original console at 30 fps. It's quite challenging but also rewarding and fun and has a nice art style, especially the environments. It's very "arcadey". Some of the old games are also quite interesting and playable with the rewind feature. Viva Piñata is one of the nicest games I've ever played, it's really fulfilling. Rare Replay is like a gaming museum and it's presented as such.
