I don't consider Zelda games as RPGs. My idea of an RPG has always been something like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Pokemon, where you have multiple party members and engage in turn-based/active-time battles, and you'd get experience points for everyone upon winning. The Zelda series has always been action/adventure games, first and foremost. Sure, you can make your sword stronger and get better tunics, but that's done by either finding them or doing some kind of task, rather than defeating countless enemies throughout the game.

@LinkxPeach Well.theres your problem you stated Wikipedia. Anyone can say anything about anything on Wikipedia that doesn't make it true. Zelda is not an RPG, it doesn't have any of the standard RPG formula in game play. Just because it's a fantasy elements doesn't automatically make it an RPG

I'm also in the camp of folk who feel Zelda doesn't qualify as an rpg, it's an action/adventure like the Ys series, imo. But at the same time, I understand and appreciate the perspective of those who feel it is an rpg series. Zelda games are basically Tower of Druaga clones. Just with a heavier emphasis on overworld exploration rather than just being an arcade/action game.
Tower of Druaga doesn't get the credit it deserves because of how vastly more popular Zelda is.

@Magician, now that's a pretty interesting take on Ys (it not being an RPG) I haven't heard of before.
Granted, I've never played any older ones (only VII & VIII), but they don't seem that markedly different than the other action RPGs (such as Tales or Mana) I've played other than the fact that their dungeons are a bit more on the puzzle-y side like Zelda (though not quite as much).

PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
@RR529 It's just my perspective. I prefer to associate the rpg genre with turn-based combat. But it isn't a hill I would die on. If anyone insisted the Ys series was an rpg series I wouldn't argue.

While I think Zelda isnt an RPG in a conventional sense, it's a lot closer than you might think. It just hides a lot of the information that most RPGs use numbers to represent. Link's heart containers could easily be converted to an HP bar, enemies have their own set of stats (HP, Attack, etc.) and you even have an inventory. I'd say since the focus is more on exploration, puzzle solving, and using items thats what really puts it in a different genre. So Zelda may not have much in common with Final Fantasy, but it isnt too far from something like Secret of Mana

After a quick glance through this thread, has really only one person even mentioned Chrono Trigger? I am currently playing through both it (for the millionth time) and Breath of Fire 2 (for the first time). They came out less than a year apart, and Chrono Trigger was actually supposed to come out earlier before it got delayed by a couple of months, and it is amazing how light years ahead of its time that game was. I absolutely would never have the patience to play Breath of Fire without the save states of the NSO. It is basically a roguelike where you are pretty much guaranteed to die in every dungeon and have to restart back at your last save in whatever town with some additional experience and money until you are finally strong enough to survive the trek back to the dungeon and make it through on your tenth attempt. And I think most RPGs back then were like that. Chrono Trigger not only was amazing back then but has stood the test of time and is easily my favorite RPG ever. And it's also remarkably quick to get through on a New Game + where you can beat practically every non-boss enemy in one hit.
