That looks terrible. Not the voice acting, the game.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

I've been complaining about my PS4 gathering layers and layers of dust for the past few months...I'm gonna have to get my feather duster out soon though, because GT Sport is coming - and the more I see of it, the more excited I get! I've posted a couple of PlayStation Access videos below from the beginning of the month - the first is a general overview, the second takes a more in-depth look at the livery editor - salivating stuff! Enjoy!

I have to admit, I was a little concerned about GT Sport when I first heard about it - especially when they were going on about 'tearing up the rule book' and 'starting afresh' with the Gran Turismo formula - I was really concerned that the finished product would be barely recognisable as a GT game (the series I know and love!) ..but, the more I see of it, the more it's reminding me of the GT games of my youth - really seems to capture that classic GT spirit (and then some!) and I can't wait to get stuck in! ..and check out that livery editor! ..and the 'scapes photo mode!

Oh man, I'm gonna have a lot of fun with this game!

Any other racing fans aboard this same hype train?

(Releases: 17th October!)

@NaviAndMii This has been arguably the best year for the PlayStation 4, and yet yours is dusty?!

Anyways, I was lucky enough to join the European Gran Turismo Sport beta, and while it was quite limited in terms of cars and tracks selection, it was certainly very good fun to play. The sense of speed is the most immediate and noticeable improvement over the previous games, and the audio of the car engines are no longer comparable to the sound of a hoover. The online races went without a hitch too, which surprised me as I have a broadband connection that is pretty erratic at the best of times.

Polyphony Digital continue to be wizards in terms of visuals, but that aspect of this series is never a concern.

I’m only buying two (retail) games from September to Christmas; Star Wars Battlefront II and Gran Turismo Sport so, I will playing a lot of those two games in the coming months. Perhaps we can have a race or two nearer to the time, hey?

@Dezzy The first two or three chapters feels somewhat familiar however, chapter four onwards feel like a mixture of Uncharted 2 in terms of set pieces and Uncharted 4 in an open world-ish environment. Finding those Hoysala tokens in The Western Ghats felt closer to the classic Tomb Raider games, which makes it feel fresh (or fresher, shall we say) than the Uncharted games gone by.

I cannot believe this game was created from scratch in an entire year BTW.

p.s. I was just in a fight whereby Nadine and a soldier were in melee, only for me to shoot the baddie followed by Chloe yelling, "quit it you guys!". Very, very few games give that extra little bit of attention to things like this.

@Peek-a-boo Haha! In fairness, when it comes down to a choice between buying a game for my Switch, or a game for my PS4, I'm usually leaning towards picking the Switch game at the moment (regardless) just to bulk it out a bit - that probably goes some way to explaining the (metaphorically) dusty PS4!

Great to hear you had a positive experience with the beta - always good to hear hands-on (and ears-on!) impressions, those experiences are what really matter - and it's safe to say that my hype just grew that bit more! High quality visuals and details seems to be pretty much par for the course with these modern racing sims - but, even so, the more I see of GT Sport, the more it seems that they've taken it to a whole other level! The ability to go to such detail in the livery editor - and bring those creations to life on the track or in photo mode - just looks exceptional! ..not to mention that you can also share your liveries/photos/creations with the wider community too! ..and the menu's and history sections look fantastic as well! So much to sink your teeth in to!

I'd definitely be down for some racing when the full game drops (although, my subscription lapsed recently - but I'll probably renew it around October time to coincide with GT ) ..oh - and don't even get me started on Battlefront II! WOW! My brother was totally and utterly addicted to the original - but not without complaint...pretty much every grumble he had seems to have been adressed in the sequel though - and, again, visually...just...WOW! (I also like the look of the new Assassin's Creed game - I kind of dropped out the series a while back - but ANCIENT EGYPT BABY! ..THAT'S how you pull me back in! )

Lost Legacy was pretty fun. I found a lot of segments to be annoying, but it was alright in the end.

It's funny how people say "my console is gathering dust" to mean "I haven't used it much recently".

It literally still gathers dust even if you use it every day. Whereas if you never use it, but dust regularly, it doesn't gather dust.

@NaviAndMii Watch this 90 seconds long Nurburgring (at night time) comparison!

One is a video game, the other is real life:

Footage captured on an OG PlayStation 4, not the PS4 Pro. Boggles the mind, that does.

@Dezzy So true. I need to clean my systems more often.

@Peek-a-boo Do you perhaps know if GTS has any kind of (worthwhile) campaign or single player mode?

Octane

Haruki_NLI

@Octane I think they confirmed it lacks single player campaign, just training.

@Peek-a-boo There is something artificial about the lighting on the game one. And obviously the grass and barriers lack the finer detail and blur from moving so fast past them.

Apart from that, looks great!

@Dezzy But we watched the trailer, didn't we?

I gave up on FFXV after the terrible midgame twist. It's just an open world game with above average combat and it'll never be anything more than that. It's not like all the rest don't have terrible plots too.

Lol, 30 million people have watched Rapping for Jesus. That's not a good metric for anything!

Which mid-game twist? The storytelling was just very poor overall. I'm still hoping they make a XV-2 though so they can reuse that world and battle system. If they added some more towns and a new story, it could reused for something good.

Ah, okay - this is a little concerning - I just watched another video (below) and it seems that the single player campaign (offline) isn't 'classic Gran Turismo', unfortunately ..it seems that this is going to be a predominantly online game - 'Campaign Mode' will teach you how to get better - but for proper racing, you have to go online ('Sport Mode') and compete against players of a similar ability (using 'advanced matchmaking', apparently) from around the world.

The single-player essentially features 4 modes:

  • Driving School (The basics)
  • Mission Challenge (Knocking over cones on track etc)
  • Circuit Experience (Learn 'racing lines' on specific tracks)
  • Racing Etiquette (Learn acceptable driving conduct)
...no licences to earn, no cups or career to play through - a bit of a shame really, I think

However, if it's anything like the way I play (for example) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, online will probably be my 'go to' game mode anyway. GT Sport's progression system seems to pretty much give you the freedom to do whatever you want (you get rewarded for distance driven in-game, regardless of what mode you choose) - the more you play, the more you earn - and the more you earn, the more money you'll have to spend on purchasing cars etc.

..but, if you're looking for a robust, fully featured and fleshed out single player campaign - Project CARS 2 might be the way to go instead. The original Project CARS had a ridiculously robust single player campaign - but the lack of certain car brands and car customisation options (aesthetics) kind of took a bit of character away from the game, I think. Project CARS 2 has a lot more licenses, so a huge and more varied roster of cars to choose from (compared to the original) - but, again, doesn't seem to have much by the way of car customisation...which I think is a shame.

For me, personally, I'm probably still leaning towards GT Sport of the two - so long as the online racing is fun and fair, that's probably where I'd have spent the majority of my time anyway - but, not gonna lie, leaving the 'core' GT experience out of GT Sport is a real shame - and quite a risk too...depending on what you want to get out of a racing game on PS4, certain players might be better off looking elsewhere.

(EDIT: Here is a link to the official Gran Turismo Sport website which gives a bit of a run down of what to expect from the game)

@NaviAndMii Slightly Mad Studios (Project CARS) won't get any of my money, after the scam the first game was. The game was funded for Wii U, 360, PS3 and PC, but only system that saw a release was PC. The irony was that when they polled the gamers on their site what version they were looking most forward to, the majority voted for Wii U. They also deleted comments from their site (including mine), and all I did was politely ask if a Wii U version was still in the works.

I'd rather get The Crew or GTS for my racing fix. Unless we get an F-Zero announcement soon.

Octane

NaviAndMii

@Octane Yeah, I totally understand! SMS royally screwed over WiiU owners - not delivering on that promise is quite unforgivable...just on principle! I picked up a pre-owned copy of Project CARS (so they didn't get any money directly from me! ) and found it to be quite enjoyable (to a point) - but yeah, difficult to look past their morally-bankrupt initial crowd-funding campaign!

Octane

@NaviAndMii It's not even the cancellation of the Wii U version that bothers me, it's deleting the comments that mentioned the Wii U version just so people would forget about it. Well, I guess it worked in the end, because most people did forget.

Octane

NaviAndMii

@Octane Yeah - for me, it was just a combination of intrigue, a decent pre-owned price and the lack of a GT game that convinced me to pick it up...

DriveClub, The Crew and Need For Speed just weren't really what I was looking for (for varying reasons) - so I gave it a go - and the absence of a proper career mode in GT Sport means that Project CARS still probably has its place with some...but I'll always favour Gran Turismo games really - like Mario Kart, F-Zero etc, it's just an established brand that I know, love & trust - and that has never let me (or communities I care about) down!

...and it's not the end of the world that GT Sport doesn't have a proper career mode really - I often find that playing against other players just makes racing that bit more intense...so long as dirty driving is properly punished (!) I'll be fine

@Peek-a-boo (or anyone else who played the beta!) Were you able to get a feel for how the matchmaking works in GT Sport? Did you, for example, seem to get matched with drivers of a similar ability (and level of cleanliness) to yourself? ie. I understand that you get given a 'Sportsmanship Rating', does that seem to work quite well? eg. If two players collide, does the game seem to 'punish' you both - or does it seem to do a good job of discerning who was at fault?

Accidents happen, of course, but few things wind me up more than deliberately dirty driving in online racing! ..so I'd be interested to know peoples' first-hand impressions on just how intuitive this 'Advanced Matchmaking' system seems to be!

Peek-a-boo

Just finished The Lost Legacy.

The finale was the single best chapter in the entire Uncharted series, and a love letter to the series itself.

It took the best parts of Uncharted 4 biggest set piece, which was my unbelievably high bar before this game came along, and took Uncharted 2 best set piece, expanded on them, and made you appreciate everything the Uncharted series has brought to the world of gaming.

Also, the last line in the game is fantastic. Perfect. Perfect!

Please do NOT read this spoilers until you have finished the game:

This game also made me like Sam a lot more. I liked him before, but what a character he was in this game.

And Nathan Drake is briefly mentioned! “He’s a selfish dickhead.”

And that amazing head scratcher of a shadow puzzle!

And those herd of Indian elephants!

So yeah, when you accept that it's some arenas and exploration, nicely built, for most of the game, followed up by the best chapter of any Uncharted I have ever played, then this game is totally worth your time.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End still has my favourite overall narrative, and a particularly nasty villain in Rafe however, this game is now my new favourite Uncharted game, because it is literally like playing the greatest hits of the Uncharted series. I would quite happily play more of these side stories.

Thankfully, The Lost Legacy does away with the admittedly uneven pace of Uncharted 4 and brisk along from chapter to chapter whilst mixing up combat, puzzles, environmental exploration and character exposition, as well as the fact that it was somehow made within a year too.

p.s. And whilst I was utterly gobsmacked at Uncharted 4 on my OG PlayStation 4 last May, playing The Lost Legacy on my PS4 Pro is just simply spellbinding. Horizon Zero Dawn and The Lost Legacy are now the two main visual benchmarks going forward.

Also features the best sunrise in any game too.

I told my sister that Lost Legacy made the PS4 sound like it was gonna blow-up. Pretty loud game, and it was definitely a very pretty game.

My overall thoughts on the game aren't as super duper about it, but it was fun and enjoyable to play and watch.

Over half the way through Lost Legacy now.

Really not feeling this game so far I'm afraid. It feels like just a worse version of Uncharted 4. The characters are worse (although Chloe would be better if she had a more interesting partner), the story is worse, and the world design is worse.

The open world section especially felt completely contrived. Completely different approach from the Madagascar and the boat exploration parts in Uncharted 4, which I thought were brilliant.
