This week on Imagine-Nation they covered Final Fantasy XV, and they spent a lot of time talking to Tabata.

He mentioned that the industry used to be dominated by Japanese companies, but about 10 years ago that all changed with the emergence of what he called "high tech Western games" (and they provided a list of the top 10 selling games worldwide of 2015, of which only one was Japanese, Splatoon, in 10th place). With XV, they've been focusing on 3 things they can do to evolve the Final Fantasy series to compete in this new era:

  • Go open world: It was mentioned that following a mostly linear path was the series' history, but that's not what gamers want today, so they wanted to make a large world where players can forge their own way through the game's story (it was mentioned that the more modern setting was also decided upon to make it easier for players to connect to the game's world, and that they'd discover the more fantasy elements as they went out & explored).
  • Full party at the start: It was mentioned that in past games that you'd run into new party members as you played along, but here they've decided to give you a full party from the start, as they figured that'd be more fun for the player (I'd imagine the more open world nature of the game also played a part in this decision).
  • Action battle system: To attract the widest audience possible, they opted for a fully real time battle system, and even said they designed it to be played with two buttons (attack & defense) if desired, so it'll be easy for anyone to experience. (I'm not sure if this is the case as I haven't played the demo, but they literally did say that about the two button thing).

They also spent some behind the scenes time with the crew behind the animations/graphic design. They showed off how they used motion capture to create the character animations (each party member had a staff member assigned to do nothing but focus on that one character's animations, and to make sure they fit their personalities), as well as their focus on photo realistic graphics (even carefully designing the summons to make sure they looked like they belonged in the environment you happened to be in at the time, so you could picture it in real life), and even how each version of the game will have it's own unique set of mouth animations, that way they always match the language being spoken.

I feel a little bit grumpy about the Gravity Rush 2 delay, because it was going to be my 'Christmas Day' game.

It's the kind of game you light up a pipe, pop a monocle on and poke the log fire before booting the game up in glee.

Blah!

Giving the DLC away for free is a rather nice move to make up for the delay though. My only worry is that it is out one week before Resident Evil VII, which some folks may 'wait one more week' for instead.

Just Rez Infinite ∞, the Ashes of Ariandel expansion (for Dark Souls III) and The Last Guardian for the rest of this year.

Stop it, stop that! You're being too British. It's not allowed!

But seriously, it is that of dim-the-lights-to-watch-a-movie, game. Don't know about the pipe, though...

Another delay to 2017, what's next? FFXV or The Last Guardian?

Still, if a delay is needed to make the game better then go for it.

This is the one delay that you can buy wasn't because of development challenges.

Whelp, another game moved to the jam-packed 2017. That leaves only The Last Guardian for the rest of the year. Hopefully that little indie adventure game called Hob releases this year, as the devs said ''soon''.

Now, excuse me, I'm going to cry somewhere in a corner.

Another Sony title delayed and now the third holiday season in a row with absolute f**k all in the way of exclusives for the PS4. MS can not get the Xbox Scorpio on store shelves quick enough so I can, happily, go back to doing most of my gaming on Xbox. MS' release strategy isn't perfect either but more often than not the exclusives I want get released on time.

Can't wait for Horizon to be pushed to April. and between Spiderman, God of War, and Days Gone, I bet ALL 3 are 2018 games.

Gravity Rush was delayed, huh? Oh well. I guess this means it had less to compete with.

Yeah, the delay was because they didn't want it up against Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian. It's now right before Resident Evil VII, Yakuza 0, and Kingdom Hearts 2.8, but the former situation was much more threatening to Gravity Rush 2.

I'm willing to bet that RE7 gets delayed anyways.

It's funny how much is planned for release in Q1 2017 right now.

If nothing else changes, I'll get Gravity Rush 2 in January, Persona 5 in February, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in March.

GR2 won't be a terribly long experience, but Persona 5 and BotW will probably have a couple hundred hours of gameplay between the two of them. Persona 5 will likely be in the 90 - 110 hour range just for a single playthrough. From what I hear, it's a bigger game than P4, and a very barebones playthrough of P4 where I didn't even get the true ending took me around 70 hours.

For those who are lazy, like me: Gravity Rush has been delayed to January 20, 2017

Seriously, guys, save for Ralizah (whose post I just saw), it feels like you're having a conversation on two different websites, because only half of the context is here, and it's especially frustrating when said context only requires a few words to sum it up, like in this case. C'mon, guys, this isn't an article comment section. It's just a good idea in general to sum up a linked article, so people know what they're clicking on, and also so people can at least get the gist of the rest of the conversation if for some reason they're unable to access that link. Sometimes there are redirects get glitched, or links break, or articles get editted, or people are browsing on their Samsung phone, and they don't want it to set itself on fire, so they gotta watch how much they us it, etc...plus, it just feels rude, like you're having some sort of secret conversation, and you only want to let a certain clique in on it that already frequent those exterior websites. We're all friends here, right?

It better not, otherwise I'll have nothing for Xmas this year.

I guess we expect people to read links before weighing in on them...

Well, to clear up any confusion, this is the relevant information from the linked article:

"In July, we announced a release date for Gravity Rush 2 that we felt most appropriate for the title. Since then, though production is proceeding smoothly, the landscape for that release date has changed dramatically.

Gravity Rush 2 is the conclusion of Kat’s journey, so we want players to have enough time to dive deep into her story. In addition, as a lot of work went into online features that allow for asynchronous player interaction, we want as many people as possible playing the title at the same time. Thus, after careful deliberation, we have decided to change the release date. Gravity Rush 2 will now launch on January 20, 2017.

I would like to apologize to all those players anxiously awaiting Gravity Rush 2. After four years of development making a title we are very proud of, we want to release it at the very best time.

In exchange for the longer wait, we have decided to release the premium DLC planned for the title free of charge. This additional story will take place in the world of Gravity Rush 2 and we think fans will have a lot of fun playing through it."

A summary still helps.

And, in this specific case, there's nothing to "weigh in on". It's a delay. Granted, the link is still helpful for those looking for more information, but I don't see a lot of people requiring 3+ paragraphs to understand the fact that a game has been delayed to a specific date. In fact, them giving a specific date instead of a vague Q1 or 2017 already speaks volumes more about the nature of the delay than anything they wrote in their PR messege - it's probably a bump or two in the road, and they still have a good enough grasp on things that we can reasonably expect it to release in January like they're saying it will.

You don't understand the online games discourse. Further still, you "weighed in" with the remainder of this very same post.

So, to summarize, for PS4 in 2017, we currently have...

South Park: The Fractured but Whole - Q1 2017
Mass Effect: Andromeda - Q1 2017
Outlast 2 - Q1 2017
Kingdom Hearts HD II.8 — Final Chapter Prologue - Q1 2017
Gravity Rush 2 - January 20
Resident Evil 7 - January 24
Yakuza 0 - January 24
Nioh - February 9
Persona 5 - February 14
For Honor - February 14
Sniper Elite 4 - February 14
Berserk and the Band of the Hawk - February 21
Horizon: Zero Dawn - February 28

Jesus christ.
