@VoidofLight I think people are really exaggerating. It's all based on a single unit, which isn't conclusive. And even if it was, more heat coming out of the fan is a GOOD thing, because that means the system is getting rid of the heat more easily. If it was worse, you would expect less heat coming out of it. But none of this matters, because they didn't even measure the internals, nor was it compared to OG models in a controlled set up.

I wouldn't have paid a scalper just to get an OG model, if anything, those are probably more prone to faults if you look at any other console ever released.

@VoidofLight they did not test the components. All they have are assumptions. Stating that the new PS5 hardware revision has bad fans based on more heat coming out is totaly clickbait and ignorant. In fact, it may even prove that the fans are improved and doing a more efficient job.

@Octane Ah. Well, I don’t know if the one I’m getting is a revised model or a base model. I assume it was a fairly recent one, since the person who sold it said they just bought their own system, and got another one to sell.

@Octane
There's a difference between more heat coming out due to better cooling... and more heat coming out because of worse cooling. In the case of the latter, that's not a good thing. Smaller heatsink means worse cooling, not better.

So it's not getting rid of heat more easily, it's simply running hotter and thus, temps are rising higher and the exhaust is hotter.

That said, I'm sure they function the same. Still, there are some questions I'd personally want answers to such as how the increased temps will affect NVMe degradation, fan noise level, and mean time to failure for various parts affected. I'm not claiming any of these will prove issues in time, and there's the fact I doubt Sony would make changes they think would be detrimental to the system, which should be reassuring, but they are potential issues that should be taken into consideration at the very least. Because there's no way Sony did lifespan degradation tests for the system or NVMe drives connected.

@VoidofLight
Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. Just enjoy the system. If something happens, oh well. Life's too short to get hung up on what ifs. Unless there's a massive issue like RROD where the issue is known. And that's not the case.

@JaxonH True. I’m just worried about my ps5 overheating. It’s kind of like how I’m scared of my switch bending when I play in docked mode..

Smaller heatsink, less costly component materials... it seems like Sony is tired of losing money on these consoles and is gambling on the original model having been a little overdesigned when it comes to cooling the system.

Still, it's a little hard to swallow paying full price for a less robust version of this device than launch buyers received.

On a related note: I discovered that, unlike other AAA games on the console, God of War causes my PS4 to sound like a jet engine and heat up tremendously, which likely means it needs to be cleaned out. So I guess I'll put that game on hold until I work up the energy to disassemble it and use an air duster to clean out the grime that's been building up inside of it.

@VoidofLight
I can appreciate those concerns. Nobody wants their nice electronics to develop issues.

As for Switch, it doesn't get nearly hot enough. The thermals on the Switch are insanely good, even when docked. My Win 2 gets so hot it almost burns your hands. Switch is like an ice cube by comparison.

And I believe the PS5 only changed on the digital edition. So you have nothing to worry about with the Disc version.

@JaxonH Ah. I got a disc one, since I have physical copies, and I wouldn't have much else to play otherwise.

Octane

@JaxonH If more heat is coming out of the system, it is more effective in getting rid of it. Worse cooling means it cannot get rid of the heat easily, with the internals heating up more.

Anyway, that's the issue, there's a lot of speculation based on a single measurement of heat coming out of the system, instead of the actual internal temps. I'd love to see a proper comparison of the internals before jumping to any conclusions.

Playing more of Horizon Zero Dawn today. For the first time in a long time, I got off work with the urge to fire up the PC and play. It’s got it’s hooks in me, finally. I see the Monster Hunter addiction in this. It’s only slightly similar, but it is similar. And it has that Witcher 3, “pluck everything with a leaf from the ground and stuff in the pouch” thing going on, which gets me every time.

Figure more ppl have played the game here than in the PC thread, and it’s a PS game so same difference.

But ya, I’m really loving it! This is the first Sony exclusive that’s ever truly hooked me like this. Which is partly due to the fact I’m not often in the mood for big games like this with high commitment. But because I don’t play them that much I don’t feel burned out and I actually feel like I’m in the mood for a big game right now. And this is exactly what I needed to scratch that itch.

Long time I didn't play DDR on PS2 so when I played DDR PS2 again yesterday, I struggled a little bit in clearing a Boss song with my fingers (I played with PS2 controller at home) as I felt my fingers was stiff for not playing DDR frequently. I stretched my fingers, did some fingers exercise and I played DDR as good as usual again.

No good deed
Will I do

My brother asked me to dip a toe back into Warframe. A game I have a love/hate relationship with. From 2013 to 2017 I put over 3,500 hours into the game. But with the Plains of Eidolon update I felt the game was moving away from what I liked about it, which was just a power fantasy corridor action game.

Unfortunately, as with any live service game, the meta shifted. What used to be powerful suddenly wouldn't be anymore. e.g. - Trinity used to have unlimited range, squad 99% damage reduction, with 100% squad heal on demand. And can access unlimited energy to maintain 100% uptime on that skill.

Personally, I think nerfs for the sake of "balance" in PvE games are ridiculous, and the constant nerfing made me hate the game. Yet here I am, guiding my brother through the hamster wheel.

Ugh. Family.

So, I started God of War yesterday. Probably 3 - 5 hours in. I just arrived at a lake of some sort when I stopped. Playing on the "Give Me a Challenge" difficulty, which... has certainly been living up to its name.

I'm not really feeling the hype thus far, since combat feels a tad clunky, and I detest how close the camera is to Kratos' back in battle, which makes battles artificially more difficult than they otherwise would be. But it's like virtually every other AAA game these days where your best abilities are hidden behind a skill tree, I imagine, so I'm going to guess combat is going to get more fun as it goes on.

So far it's the standard cinematic setpiece-fest I expected, but we'll see if it opens up at some point.

@JaxonH Yep, HZD is one of the best modern Playstation-developed games, and it was a ton of fun learning how to properly take down intimidating robots to loot them for their materials. The combat is fantastic as well. Open world exploration is pretty shallow, like with most AAA open world titles, but it's extremely pretty, and, anyway, combat with robots is the star of the show here.

Beginning is a little on the slow side, but once it lets you off the leash, it was good fun. One of the few games I've bothered to replay within a year of initially playing it.

I didnt play more than a few hrs of GoW, but I liked what I played. It was pretty good. Again, nothing particularly wrong with it, just not my usual flavor of preference. Maybe if I spent more time in it I'd appreciate it more.

But Horizon is legit. Like, upper echelon quality. The gyro is crucial though. Can't imagine playing it with dual analog only. I picked off a watcher from an amazing distance right in the eye while it was running. Picked off a boar a long distance away while it was running and behind bushes. You can't do that with pure analog.

The only thing I wish it had was climbing, like Zelda had. So many times I want to climb. That aside, it's pretty much perfect. I love it.

Horizon was good, but there's a lot of room for improvement. So I hope the sequel addresses that. It's like Ghost, very pretty, with solid combat, but the missions lack a little diversity, and I wasn't really into the story. Enough to follow it through to the end. HZD didn't really fall into the same-y repetition that Ghost had, but maybe they shouldn't have divided the game into three (pretty much equal) parts.

GOW was one of my personal faves, but I really like Norse mythology, and seeing how they tackled the story and the lore was probably already enough for me. The gameplay was just the cherry on top. I also gravitate more towards the ''metroidvania'' structure of GOW than the big open worlds of HZD and Ghost. Side quests in GOW were few and far between, but they were definitely quality over quantity.

Ralizah

@Octane HZD's plot is fine. Pulp sci-fi. Which is still better than whatever The Last of Us was going for. And, so far, GoW barely has a plot.

What I liked about HZD is that it lets you off the leash at some point, and just let's you... play the game. The core gameplay loop is fairly engaging on its own. Throw in a lot of secrets to find, a really helpful in-game map, some expansive dungeons, and well-done combat mechanics with the robot fights, and it kept me glued to my PS4 for hours. I do agree there is room for improvement, but I was really impressed with it nonetheless.

GoW, comparatively, feels more like a Naughty Dog game, where it's a guided tour through a beautiful but shallow series of environments. Kratos isn't allowed to stray off the rails when going from point A to point B, presumably because the game has about ten interactive cutscenes and setpieces lined up between them, and the level design is VERY streamlined and linear, so it always feels like it's funneling you down one path. It's basically what a traditional Zelda game would feel like if Nintendo never let go of your hand.

At least, that's how it feels so far. I'm in the ringed temple at the moment.

Probably doesn't help that I'm not a GoW fan to begin with and couldn't begin to care about Norse mythology.

@JaxonH I made do with the stick aiming, but I definitely yearned for access to gyro aiming throughout HZD.

They're actually massively improving traversal in Forbidden West. There's apparently a free-climbing system which will allow Aloy to climb around her environments much more freely (where it's realistic to do so, anyway; I doubt she'll glue herself to smooth cliffsides like Spider-Link does in BotW), so no more hunting around areas for the one or two yellow handholds when there's a cliff edge or boulders you climb onto. She also has a glider (!) and grappling hook that'll give her way more exploratory freedom.

Hand-to-hand combat also looks like it's being improved.

Basically, Horizon Forbidden West could be one of the absolute best games released this generation.

Sounds amazing. I just hope they add gyro. I wouldn’t dare to dream, but with Days Gone and TLOU2, I’m starting to see a trend develop? Maybe?

I’m gonna be put in a stinky mood if I have to wait for Steam.

Let us know what you think.

It’s a great system IMO. I love the seamless transition to the digital store, and I like the blazing fast UI which is on par with Switch OS response times, perhaps even a bit faster. The controller is BY FAR the best thing about the system. They blew everyone away with the DualSense. For real. It’s not the most comfortable controller though. The analogs stick up too high and should have sat recessed into the controller by 4-5mm. And the plastic edge under the shoulder buttons constantly digs into my fingers- they should have made it thinner like Switch Pro controller, though that may not have worked due to digital triggers. Or raised the triggers higher so your fingers have more room. It’s a pet peeve of mine, and a real shame given how immaculate this controller is in every other respect. The mousepad and mic button aren’t revolutionary, but the extra button use they provide is convenient. Trigger resistance is a fad. It’s neat to experience it in Astro’s Playroom the first time, but after that you kind of wonder what it really brings to the table. Idk. I could do with or without it either way. I don’t hate it, I don’t love it. But it’s not hurting anything so, it’s fine

Overall comfort- better than Xbox, not as good as Switch Pro. Rumble- better than either. Dpad- better than Switch Pro, not as good as Xbox. Overall utility- better than either..

As for software, most of the games worth playing right now are PS4 games, imo. There’s Souls, Returnal and Ratchet. Personally I can’t do Souls games, they’re too intentionally frustrating, but maybe it’s your bag. Love Returnal, but no mid run saving kills any desire to play. I’m not big on games where you die and repeat over and over. Ratchet looks good, but I haven’t bought it yet. Not til price drops. I refuse to pay $70 for games. And I never thought Ratchet was an incredible series anyways. Graphics look great though.

However, if you’re looking to play PS4 games, and don’t mind lack of gyro or focus on games that don’t need it, PS5 is fantastic. Spiderman is great, Horizon is great (looks almost as good as on PC in native 4k 60fps), Ghosts of Tsushima is good and good a nice upgrade, God of War is great. I think all these games were patched or updated to run 4K 60fps. So PS5 is like, a PS4 Pro PRO right now. Not that that’s a bad thing. I’m content with that and since I don’t play PS much, I still have all those games to dive into and play more. So I’m not really hurting for PS5 games.

Load times are super fast. If you’ve been gaming on PC you already know, but if you haven’t it’s going to feel like a noticeable improvement. It’s a convenience thing, nothing game changing, but conveniences are nice. Never underestimate the value of convenience (see Switch).

3D audio is a mixed bag. It’s Sony’s proprietary spatial audio for headphones, similar to Dolby Atmos which is used in movies and on Xbox Series and PC. Unlike Atmos, however, it can’t be used for surround in home theater. It doesn’t transmit over HDMI. So you’re stuck with headphones if you want good audio to take advantage of Tempest 3D. No optical port on PS5 like PS4 had, and USB ports don’t support UAC2 for DACs- we’re stuck with the 1998 UAC1 standard. Which means only a very small selection of DACs are compatible. If you want solid audio that’s not compressed by wireless transmission, you’ll need a UAC1 DAC and wired headphones. Also, because they went with proprietary 3D audio, PS5 does not support Dolby Atmos or DTS:X in any capacity. Not even for streaming apps or the Blu-ray player. Just an FYI.

UI is… better, actually. I know a lot of people say they don’t like it as much is the PS4 but it’s actually grown on me. It’s not perfect, but it gets the job done. The stability, on the other hand, is a mess. I’ve had to do two full factory resets due to games downloading and getting stuck in the queue, where nothing short of the hand of God Himself could fix it. Be wary. Don’t click anything out of order for downloads, don’t pause, don’t resume, don’t do anything. After buying, click the Download button on the right and that’s it. Let it do it’s thing.

Storage is inadequate. Games are bigger than ever, and only 660 GB usable space. If you install PS4 games, it designates even more space for BC purposes beyond the game’s file size. It’s crazy how fast that storage gets used. Unless you’re a more casual PS gamer, you’re gonna need a Gen 4 NVMe drive to expand. I’m a casual PS gamer, only buying the top exclusives that don’t come to PC, and even I filled 2TB on PS4. With BC, I expect to fill at least 3TB this time. A good 2TB NVMe will run you about $400. The Samsung 980 Pro, which I recommend, is on sale now on Amazon for $360. You’ll also need a heatsink. Just @ me if you need a recommendation.

Overall, a very nice system. Just… don’t expect some grand leap in any respect beyond load times and HD Rumble. Everything else is an iterative improvement over PS4. Games honestly look the same to me. Just ever so slightly better at native 4k rather than 1440p or checkerboard. And more games seem to run 60, so that’s good. But it doesn’t feel like a generational leap visually. It feels like the jump from PS4 to PS4 Pro in that respect. It’s not a console I bought because I felt I needed it (at least not right now), but it is a console I wanted irrespective of need. And as long as you look at it through that lens of luxury, you won’t feel frustrated at the lack of systems selling exclusives. Enjoy it for what it is, and just go with the flow.
