60fps performance mode options should honestly become standard this coming gen
I love having both options for higher fidelity or better performance in general and I'm really glad Sony is taking notes when it comes to implementing them directly into their first party PS5 lineup. I also think Demon's Souls Remake is meant to have the ability to toggle between resolution & performance modes as well
I'm also personally not peeved by the lack of PS1-3 physical backwards compatibility considering they already have PSOne and PS2 Classics available to download from the PS Store and the PS4 itself already houses a crap ton of remasters and remakes of games from previous PS generations like MediEvil, N. Sane Trilogy, Spyro Reignited, The Nathan Drake Collection, Shadow of the Colossus, the Yakuza remasters & Kiwami remakes, and now Demon's Souls is getting remade for PS5 as well.
The real loss for me is the likelihood of Sony ditching Vita Remote Play with the PS5 now that the console's been discontinued, which sucks because I used that feature so much on PS4 games. I played large chunks of P5R and FFVII Remake this year strictly on my Vita and it was such a nice feature.
@TheFrenchiestFry Vita remote play would have been a nice feature. That was my most wanted feature of ps4! I used it to play knack 1 and basically never touched it again. Without all the buttons it was so so. I find a Surface and ds4 with remote play is just less infuriating.
I prefer games with VR support rather than games that require VR to play.
At least the game is playable with standard PS4 controller rather than have to buy very expensive VR set to play.
There were some PS4 games i want to add but i couldn't because of VR Required, not VR Compatible.
@Anti-Matter PSVR often goes down in price to below €200, and those bundles often come with a couple of games. If you're patient, I'm certain you can find one for a good price. PSVR games are also cheap, so that definitely helps.
Amazon has listed Demon's Souls and has cover art. Is this maybe intended as a launch game? If so, that's gotta be the biggest launch game after Halo got delayed:
From PayStation to PrayStation. This game of chicken had better end with a shocker of PS4 digital going for a very low price to compete with Series S. Granted that means nobody will be able to obtain one for at least a year. But after months and months of silence and playing chicken, if they both come up with exactly the prices we all presumed a year ago, steam will come from my ears. The entire charade was just smoke and mirrors. Unless Sony shocks us.
I think the Series S is great. I’m picking up a PS5 first (with the disc of course) but I’m planning on picking up a Series S next year when Halo Infinite drops. I haven’t owned an Xbox since the 360 era.
I think the Series S is intended for two types of gamers. People like me, who primarily play Playstation and Nintendo but would like to explore more of the Xbox ecosystem and use Gamepass without building a beefy rig.
The other group is made up of people like my best friend. He plays Call of Duty, Fortnite, 2K, and Madden. That’s it. Four games every year. In that situation a Series S makes perfect sense for him due to the lower cost of entry and the fact that all four of those titles basically require online connectivity to play (Fortnite and COD multiplayer) and the two sports titles are greatly enhanced by it.
He could just stick with current gen but the Series S does promise dramatically faster load times and quick resume functions. So it’s a QOL enhancement for him and others like him who rotate just three or four games throughout a year.
By comparison, I average 10 different games per year. Used to be a lot more but the real world sucks my time away.
@Dezzy They also revealed the box art of Returnal, Sackboy, Destruction All-stars, and GT7. I believe they're all "close to launch" games. Demon's Souls has been rated in Australia IIRC.
I’m expecting 399.99 for the Digital and 499.99 for the Complete PS5.
I could see them hitting 349.99 for the Digital but they’ll be taking an insane loss. They’re already taking a big loss on the digital. The UHD Blu-Ray drive costs maybe five bucks for them to integrate. Most of the costs of the PS5 are sunk into its I/O subsystems and that insane SSD.
@TheRedComet I think we're all expecting that. But that's still frustrating if they've made us follow this cat and mouse game for months and months only to reveal it's all exactly what we thought it was anyway. If they were going to do that and not try to price-war, they could and should have revealed prices back in the June/July showcases rather than the whole cagey mystery-shrouded price point game.
"There's something really special in the box, but I can't tell you what yet!"
"It's a Knack statue, isn't it?"
"We can't tell you what it is yet, but it's going to be really wonderful!'
"Knack statue."
"All we can say is you'll be really impressed with what it brings to your table."
"Well, if it's not a Knack statue, I guess it could be a gold plated Knack statue. Or maybe it's a PSVR for the price of a Knack statue?"
"We really can't say yet...we'll tell you when the time is right. Something's awaiting, could it be greatness?"
"I mean, it would be cool if it were a gold plated Knack statue, or a PSVR for cheap....you're building up to something it seems...."

"It's HERE!!!! It's a Knack statue. Cool, right?"
Well, they're taking a loss on digital, but there's an opportunity cost to the disc version that has to be factored in. The initial loss is probably severe, but all the money lost to middlemen, used, and discounters adds up. AD buyers, by the end, will probably put more money in Sony's pockets than the disc buyers who will look for used/discounted games. They can probably afford to drop $150 off versus disc if they wanted....my guess is they make that up if you buy 10 games in 5 years. DLCs and subs not even factored in. Figure on a $60 game, if youbuy from them you pay $60. If you buy from a retailer, there's the distributor, the freight, the retailer wholesale pricing, the print cost...... They're bilking us on digital across the board on new releases. Cheap All Digital pays you back (barely) for the difference. Which is how MS can sell $300 for the S as well.
I don't know. We all assumed 400/500 for the machine. They don't have to compare specs vs MS, they have the market presence MS doesn't. But yet, the X is beefier, and the S is cheaper..... If Sony starts at the $400 price point, they're up against both MS and Nintendo at the $300 price point. And let's not forget that Nintendo is the runaway success going right now. Being the most expensive of the 3 consoles isn't going to sit well for Sony who has won every single generation but 7 by being the cheapest option. And that doesn't even factor in Stadia and xCloud. Being that much more expensive than all the competition for the traditional lowest cost mass market leader would be a really, really painful position for Sony to be in. I don't think they can conceivably hit that 300 price, so for the only time other than PS3 launch, Sony has no choice but to be the most expensive console this time around. But I don't see how they could not make a play to get close to that price point, unless they're willing to abandon the "mass market" appeal entirely. But then they still have a problem. Series X outguns them on raw power, and Switch and Series S undercuts them on mass market affordability. They can't hang their hat on "for $100 more you can buy a more powerful machine than those other guys, but still not as powerful as the OTHER machine those other guys also have...."Buy middle of the road and SAVE! But still all digitally....like the $100 cheaper console...." I could see them going slightly petty. $375. Or kind of insulting: $389.94! Just to keep the price image looking less bad.
Sony for the first time in a long time is between a rock and a hard place. Anyone's call if they spend themselves into a hole to retain market, or just try to push through at a high sticker price and hope for the best. That wasn't such a great strategy with PS3, even with full BC from PS2. They had to purge half the hardware features just to claw back into the price game (Linux install, PS1 BC, half of PS2 BC, DSD/SACD support....)
Series S really did make this gen interesting. Is Sony competitive enough to caw back their price leader legacy, or arrogant enough they feel they don't need that anymore? And arrogant enough post PS4 they're willing to do what failed post PS2?
How about people who wait for the digital sales, though, @NEStalgia....? They still have quite good & regular ones
I haven't bought any of my Steam games at less than 20% off & that includes some pre-purchases
@BruceCM digital sales is still money going all to Sony though. It eliminates used, ENTIRELY, which is huge. And still cuts out retailer wholesale, mfr, and distro. Basically you're giving them more than the restailers do
Well, I don't, @NEStalgia .... I'm glad I don't need to get either next-gen console! Sony will have to reveal their prices & everything soon, now, though
