@CanisWolfred I'm seeing mostly that the title is devisive more than problematic. The good reviews from sources I find have quality reviews are pretty glowing, but some complaints about performance (reminds me of II....) The negative reviews including PS don't seem to dislike the game, but seem to dislike that it's dated compared to some other games, plus being reduced scope from II and the performance/bugs. "Souls-like but not as good as Souls" is common in these reviews (maybe styling the game after a series with a cult-like fan base wasn't wise.)

Also it's noteworthy scores are generally better on other platforms. I'm not sure if that's a matter of poor PS optimization, or PS fans comparing to the cadre of 1st party games that are mostly in the same genre but higher budget, like GoW and Horizon. I love PS games, but I do find PS fans be biased that Sony games redefine genres and view other similar games more negatively than other audiences do. I don't find them as genre defining as the "hardcore PS fan" tends to. I just value them as excellent games.

There aren't a lot of XBox reviews in yet, but PC reviews seem more balanced like the prior games. PS4 reviews do an awful lot of comparison to GoW on a level that I'm not sure PS critics are the best evaluators of the game. On PC it's divisive. A slew of larger outlets giving 80+, a deep divide between IGN Span and US, and a lot of "so much worse than Dark Souls!" type reviews in the negative column. I'll spin it up tonight and see how it feels (caveat: just the game, I can't compare performance since I'll be trying on X1X.)

They really shouldn't have changed the formula at all. Darksiders 2 was a great game. They should've just done the exact same style again but with a new world and main character.

If the budget is smaller, just make it a smaller world.

@NEStalgia Let us know how it plays on the X. I'm gonna be getting it on the Xbox after playing the first one the PS4 (getting the second on the X as well thanks to Game Pass) and have been curious on how it compares since some complain about it running badly.

@NEStalgia If it's any consolation regarding the God of War comparisons: It's because it's very warranted. They;ve stripped the game down to just being about combat now, and most of the gameplay I've seen was a series of corridors with minor exploration, and lots of samey enemies with little arrows trying desperately to point out that there's an enemy right behind you instead of just...zooming out and letting you see what's around you. At the same time, though, they clearly did not update the combat at all, so it's just as shallow as ever, but now that's all there is to the entire game. It no longer wants to be Zelda, and they can't afford to make it like an RPG again, so now they have to try to make it like God of War and also somehow fit in some Dark Souls influence maybe. Now it's in the same category as God of War PS4, and it certainly costs as much...the comparisons were inevitable. And of course it wasn't gonna seem anywhere near as good.

@CanisWolfred Maybe. It is a shame it doesn't want to be Zelda, though it does still have RPG trappings. The Souls-aspects alone confirm it has RPG aspects. Just not loot mechanics. I'm still not sure if GoW PS4 could be "all about the combat". If it's as you say it is it sounds like DS3 is better compared to GoW 2/3.

@Dezzy I love 2, but it's somewhat bloated with a lot of filler and inconsistent pacing. It also cost way too much for them to make compared to sales, unfortunately.

@PikPi I can say I originally played 2 on the WiiU and it had some performance/optimization problems throughout. I bought it on PS4 but never played it. Then I bought it on X1X and played it. And it has most of the same optimization problems. It was never the hardware, but rather the game. I'm curious to see if it's the same issue this time around.

@NEStalgia

Do you have financial data on its budget vs profit?

I have heard that the old THQ was incredibly badly run from a financial perspective.

Please, even God of Boi has more deep and intricate RPG elements than Darksiders III. It's mostly basic stat upgrades from what I've seen. With that said...I still don't think the comparisons to God of War 2 or 3 would be favorable, but I'll let you figure that out for yourself.

@NEStalgia You don't have to view them as genre defining games. I mean, does anybody? Spider-Man doesn't do anything new at all, but it's a very polished experience with great fluid combat and a very enjoyable world traversal. But it certainly isn't genre defining.

I find that Sony's games in general tend to me more polished these days than ever before, and in my opinion, they're often great games as well (of course, there's always room for a Knack ). It's only logical that people are going to compare them to other games on the platform. And in ways, it's a good thing if it means developers are striving for a more polished experience. And I'm certainly not arguing that every game should be a 7-year endeavor filled with crunch to make horse balls shrink in the snow!

@Dezzy I don't have numbers, but I remember the conversation around the end of THQ's collapse that it was a contributor with costs and delays, and there was a huge gap, Tomb Raider style, of what was needed to get into black versus what it actually saw. It's a niche series and they built that one expecting it would become the next Assassin's Creed more or less.

Yeah THQ was VERY badly financially run. That wasn't Vigil's fault. But possibly giving Vigil the amount of money for DSII they gave them without understanding sales potential was part of that bad financing.

@CanisWolfred Yeah, only a "handful" more hours to find out myself

@Octane All you Knack haters. Mrrgrrgrr.

Yeah I agree, but I do think that having PS oriented reviewers reviewing something like DSIII is going to give a very different bias than non-PS reviewers. It would be like having Nintendo oriented reviewers reviewing Jak1, LBP, or All-Stars Battle Royalle.

That doesn't mean DSIII is amazing. DS has always been an AA mid-tier rough around the edges series. But it's a different slant on the game versus PS based reviewers that are using as comparison a slew of first party mega-budget games that are similar. Similarly a racer or shooter is likely to get harsher criticism from xbox based reviewers since games have to compare to the Forza/Halo/Gears series while PS only has to live up to gag Killzone....

@NEStalgia

Lol the Tomb Raider situation was ridiculous. If I remember rightly, it needed 5 million sales in order to profit. Which was the most any Tomb Raider game had ever sold (over a decade earlier).

Luckily because the remastered version sold so well, it did end up selling well over 5 million in the end. It's one of Square Enix's best selling games ever I believe.

Kingdoms of Amalur was another good example of terrible financials. That needed 3 million in order to profit. Way too high expectations for a brand new IP.

@Dezzy I love how S-E made the exact same mistake with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. It's beautiful synergy.

@Cobalt That would be flipping awesome. Unfortunately $20 says it's actually a proprietary hard drive format that will sell for 2TB for only $99.99.

@Cobalt where that from? Got a link

Edit: nevermind found it

@NEStalgia Most definitely. But I do think Crash, Spyro, Ratchet and the whole bunch are overrated anyway

Astro Bot is brilliant though. Feels like it's made by a Nintendo team.

Posted this in the Xbox thread but may as well here too:

@Octane Spyro's worthy of the praise, though is a product of its time. It did some things better than Mario 64 around the same time period, and similarly 64 doesn't always hold up well despite the core fans. The remaster is fantastic but I want to rage like Ripto every time I have to mess with that horrid camera in 1 & 2, even in the remaster. Crash was overrated though. It's unique, it's cool, but the dread camera placement makes it less platformer and more rhythm memorization game. I do love Ratchet though. Insomniac never disappoints, Ratchet, Spidey, Sunset Overdrive....so far, they're spot-on reliable. I miss Sly. No Sly 5 on PS4

Jak is the horribly overrated series. There's cool things about it but I still feel that 1 holds up better than 2 and 3 despite the bad camera. I'm enjoying it more now than in the past because it was always a bad series, that people made into a super hype series. Playing it as a B-side now is a lot more enjoyable.

Actually, what is it about ND that since the beginning they've always been massively overrated? Crash, Jak, Uncharted, TLoU......they've been overhyped with terrible cameras since the 90's. Meanwhile Sucker Punch and Insomniac are much better studios IMO and don't get nearly the hype (maybe after Spidey, Insomniac will.)

Edit: Actually Guerilla didn't show they were capable of great output until Horizon. Killzone is a completely meh series that was wasting their apparent talents.
