I see a Switch type situation as most likely given both events (PSX 2018, E3 2019) missing. Announce in fall 2019, have huge blowout at PSX 2019 and launch spring 2020 with TLoU2 being both PS4 and PS5.
@erv They actually had to increase their sales forecast for this year. IIRC the peak was last year, but this year is going to be very close from a hardware perspective. Software-wise I can only imagine this year is going to be a lot more favourable to them than last year. Not because last year was bad, but this year they had two exclusives back to back (God of War & Spider-Man) breaking sales records. I reckon they could go on like this until 2021 if they have to.
@Octane ah thanks for that. I don't know what titles are out between now and say beginning of 2020 that are going to be must have or system sellers, or at least are anticipated to be. If what you're saying is true and they've got enough to go on till 2021 I'm sticking with my 2020 feeling here. Of course time will tell...
@erv Well, there's The Last of Us Part II, Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima. All three of them feel like God of War/Spider-Man calibre games. Then there's Days Gone, and a bunch of other games like Dreams, the Medievil remake, Concrete Genie, not necessarily system sellers.
@kkslider5552000 I agree. E3 is a big, big stage that commands a lot of attention and hype, and that attention and hype goes right to their competitors. Sure maybe they'll do the big reveal and have their own huge events outside the show, at a later date, but just removing themselves entirely from the event is a weird, move that hands a massive audience a big open mic night to Microsoft, and oddly Nintendo (if they don't flub it.) People say E3 is less relevant, and it is, but it's not irrelevant. I could see skipping the awkward shuffling press around a fake church mess, and maybe trying to hold out until MS announces to do any announcements (the usual, go last and undercut routine), but to not even have a floor presence?
It's not that I'm concerned for the survival of Playstation here, but rather, this smacks of the same kind of post PS2 arrogance that brought us the disaster that was PS3. I've long predicted PS5 following the success of PS4 will give us the same Sony that gave us PS3 after the success of PS2, and this feels like I'm right. At a time when MS is rebounding I don't want gen 9 to be a flip flop of this one where MS has absolute power and PS just struggles to catch up.
Sony not show up at all for E3 is odd, no matter how you slice it. It's clear that Sony is content with their 2019 lineup of games to carry the PS4 through the year. Ultimately leading to a 2019 PS5 reveal, followed by a late 2019 or early 2020 release. It'll be interesting to see how much mindshare Sony will lose because of this decision.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,538 games (as of January 16th, 2026)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)
@Magician Well, there was a rumour that they are going to do two PSX-style events next year. That means the media outlets will be talking about them regardless. And I imagine an expo like PSX will be a lot more accessible to the general public too. I don't think skipping E3 means they're going silent throughout the year.
Yeah but as a counterpoint, E3 is a known thing and PSX much less so.
The only valid reason for this, is that it might give them enough controversial attention that it won't matter. But I'm not sure they need controversial attention if they're on top. Maybe they really don't need that.
@Ralizah also, Nier: Automata question for you. I was playing and got to the amusement park boss. I was lv9, it was lv15, and I was kind of getting destroyed rapidly. It was kind of a cheap difficulty spike as nothing prior to that was even remotely difficult since the intro (and I chose to ignore the non-hostiles leading up to it.) I died the first time.
The idea of losing all my stuff on second death seems too disastrous to risk, and it put me right back in the boss room, so I put it on easy mode to cheese the boss, which I hate doing, and was able to recover the corpse. I feel kind of cheated, but I'd feel more cheated if I lost everything.
The question is: How disastrous is it if you lose your corpse, how much everything is "everything" lost (i.e. do you start with no weapons, no hud (because those are chips), and lose even the ability to switch to easy mode (because the easy mode benefits are chips.) I could see frequently losing "everything" with such random boss spikes, and it makes me wonder how impossible the game becomes as a result? I haven't really been buying at stores since other than potions I don't really know what is of value (and I could lose it , or the gold anyway), and I don't have the materials for most upgrades.....plus the pod is what I want to upgrade most since I seem to use the gunning more than blades just due to game design.
Other than that I love the game, but I'm just terrified of losing all that stuff and making the game too unfun to try to dig back from that. It's a little nebulous a system. At least Dark Souls has no real penalty other than losing what you tried to hoard between deaths for buying stuff.
Also what's best to prepare for it to get things you can keep instead of things you lose, i.e. "buy a ton of this, and spend all of this, to be sure you got something for the money?"
@NEStalgia There's no reason to worry about losing your chips if you don't save your data after losing them. If you die twice and lose all your equipped chips (which I'm pretty sure only means the extra ones you don't start out with, as you need some chips to even be able to function and move around in the game anyway), just reload your last save from before you died. BOOM! Chips are there. Remember, this game doesn't auto-save, so you don't need to worry about Dark Soulsy bullpucky like that.
If you don't want to workaround that system, though, I'd say you should always keep stocked up on healing items and use those liberally until you get your body back.
Also, it's an RPG, so you probably want to kill everything you come across that gives you EXP. Doing side-quests also helps with this. If you rush the main story, you'll probably stay underleveled.
Currently Playing on January 13, 2026: The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy (PC)
@RR529 Yeah, that's a really good deal. The system has a pretty good library. What's on your radar, game-wise?
Off the top of my head I can think of Dragon Quest XI, the Last Guardian, Nioh, the Yakuza series, Ratchet & Clank, Infamous Second Son, and Titanfall 2 amongst others for currently released fair. Kingdom Hearts 3, Ace Combat 7, and Ghosts of Tsushima for future releases (and I eventually want to get the VR setup as well).
Of course I highly doubt I'll get everything on my wishlist, especially since I'll be alternating between Switch & PS4 for purchases.
