The ORIGINAL Star Wars Battlefront 2 has had it's multiplayer restored! It's being run via GoG's “GoG Galaxy“ , and it has crossplay with the Steam version.

Is it just as glitchy and exploitable as I remember it being?

I wasn't aware it was glitchy or exploitable. I guess that depends on who you play with.

@CanisWolfred I played it on Xbox and don't recall those problems and I can't help but imagine the Xbox and PC have more in common than PS2 does

Beta access open for those who preordered, and after spending almost an entire day with it, it's nice.
Going from EA1 to EA2 feels a lot different, and for some reason the best control scheme for starfighters [the one that mirrors the original Battlefront 2] doesn't work, making Starfighter Assault pretty much a no-go until it gets patched. Everything else is great though, even if heroes seem to bite the dust a bit too quickly at times.

Sounds like we can't truly play in squads with friends AT ALL now. Partying up ensures you're in the same match, but you still squad spawn with random people...

DICE, it's OK that it's “Star Wars Battlefield“. You don't need to reinvent the wheel just because “it's different“. Just bring in squads. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

@DarthNocturnal Two steps forward, one step back.

And I am not particularly liking what I have heard about the Star Cards being part of their micro transactions ‘strategy’ via the new loot crates. Coughing up for avatars, emotes and cosmetics are absolutely fine; paying for upgrades (inside loot crates) towards specific classes, however, are not.

The players who pay out for loot crates will therefore have easier access to Star Cards, which allows those very same players to equip a variety of abilities that will make them both more powerful and more resilient.

I’ll be trying the open beta over the weekend, but it is hard to ignore all of the above though...

Eh, I'm not too worried. If it's balanced, buying cards won't be “instant win“. Or even “more likely to win“.

@DarthNocturnal Why would they balance it? They want you to buy their loot boxes.

Can't sell loot boxes if everyone leaves due to imbalanced gameplay, now can they?

Ah, we will see I guess...

Just feel really down about all this recent awful news of loot boxes and micro transactions being implemented into fully fledged $60/€60/£55 games, such as Forza Motorsport 7 (you can’t even buy or drive some cars without opening a loot box...), Middle-earth: Shadow of War and now these early rumblings of Star Wars Battlefront II going down a similar route, if slightly less offensive than the latter two games.

Happy to hop into the beta and play for fun over the weekend though!

Woke up at 5 AM randomly, decided to dl the beta.... then play the beta.... for a few hours. (My friend hopped on and joined me for about an hour).

So far, so good. My biggest issue was it not progressing past the ToS screen, which was solved with a simple turn off/ turn on. Otherwise, Galactic Assault is fun. I'm definitely going to be playing Heavy and Officer a lot.

Annddd I’m out.

Star Wars Battlefront II has a loot crate problem.

The only way to get new abilities and weapons in Battlefront 2 is from opening loot crates"

That explain why I couldn't level up (to get abilities) in the beta. I did not open any loot crates during the beta.

And this is what killed my decision to buy the game altogether:

So, not only are you now after the full collection of Star Cards, you're after the best versions of them. And again, you can individually upgrade them by spending scrap, but you're given too little and too randomly to make this reliably viable.

A €60/$60/£55 game with P2W loot boxes isn’t my cuppa tea. And the beta unfortunately wasn’t all that much fun either. I am not sure what it was, but something feels off about it.

I’m sure plenty of other folks will have a good time playing this though!

I thought I read that the final system might be different. They just don't have it in the beta. That loot crates are, at best, a shortcut, and not the only way to progress a class (because that is kinda silly).

And if it IS like that, well, everyone else will hopefully make a big stink and maybe EA/ DICE will change course.

I had fun (and plan to have more fun, now that the beta has been extended), and I still want the game. I just won't buy any crates with real money. Republic credits are most certainly good out here.

@Peek-a-boo Agreed that something felt off about the beta.

Also that second bit of text you quoted reminds me of gacha mobile games like Fire Emblem Heroes. Those games are at least free to download though. This is a $60 retail game.

They have to put in all those lootboxes to make up for actually making a complete 60 dollar game this time. /s

I've been also playing the beta. I've been having fun and all and the game it's a real treat for the eyes with ultra settings on PC but it's also not convincing me to spend $60 on it. So far I'm thinking I might be waiting for a price drop or it to go on sale before I will grab it.

So the beta is over, and a few last-minute discoveries might mean that all fears of the game being “P2W“ are overblown or unfounded.

For one thing, it was possible to create and upgrade star cards in the Collection menu using scrap. Selecting a star card you hadn't unlocked let you unlock the starting tier for 40 scrap. Then you can further upgrade it to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th tier with more.

I'm also hearing that the final game will have waaaaay more challenges (and it's own take on Hutt contracts), some of which will net fixed rewards for certain classes (including weapons and star cards). Other weapons are apparently craftable with scrap.

So, I guess the main question is “can one get decent scrap without much/ any investment into loot crates, with or without real money?“. More then a few beta challenges gave scrap, so maybe it'll be plentiful in the full game? Timed challenges are a thing, so they could easily create infinite ways to earn it without needing to rely on loot crates.

"Sometimes, I just don't understand human behavior" - C-3P0

DarkRula

Well, the daily loot boxes give scrap, and I'm pretty sure duplicate cards are meant to give scrap as well. The pay to win stuff is certainly being over-exaggerated to the highest degree. But then, it is EA, so what can you expect.
Need reasons to hate, right?
