A seller on Ebay says that European PS3 games can be played on an American PS3 if you are using an HDMI cable. I was just wondering if anyone here knows that to be true or not?

Aviator

Wikipedia says yes.
"Like the PSP, the PlayStation 3 is region free for all PS3 games. However, backward compatibility modes (i.e. PlayStation 1 and 2 games) are region locked. Blu-ray Disc and DVD region codes are also enforced.[5] While the PS3 does have hardware regional lockout support,[3] Sony apparently has no intentions to use it."

Aviator is exactly right, but you can import away all you want with the PS3. You can also use the PSN Stores from other regions on any regions conole as well.

I tried doing that before after getting some advice on here, for the Japanese store, but it didn't work. I was gonna try connecting to the US Store, anyone here who can help?

That's weird, because I've downloaded both PSOne Classics and PSN games from the Japanese store, games that aren't available anywhere else in the world, and I've had no trouble whatsoever. All you need is either a Japanese credit card, or Japanese PSN network points.

The problems I had were with logging in. I was able to set up a Japanese Account just fine but that's where I had trouble. Maybe I need to change some of the settings as well.

What you you mean you had trouble logging in? Specifically, what was the problem?

Yeah, there aren't any limits here. You don't need a HDMI cable for region-free gaming, you can do whatever.

I've read that if you're running in SD, European games won't work on American PS3's because of the difference in TV technology. They output fine if you're using HD standards, though. Technically, Component would be sufficient, but composite would not.

The way I understand it, it's just a difference-in-technology limitation and not one forced by Sony in any way. So as far as region locks are concerned, it's open game...but TV resolutions are a concern.

Only trouble might be if you get a game for a region and you want DLC you will have to marry them up from the same region.

I want to get the European version of Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe, since it is uncensored. I don't think that game has DLC, but glad to learn that it will work on my PS3.
