@zazhyrule that is quite the predicament youre in haha how bout both? i didnt get the first shooter either but 2 is awesome and the multiplayer is really cool if youre into that as well...lots of special skills and items to customize to your liking
Anyone have Blood and Gold? It was a free download this month for PSPlus members (in Aus, anyway), and I quite enjoy the Western vibe, but it's not the most popular game.
@Waltz - do you mean Lead and Gold? Or is it titled differently for AUS or something?
In any case--if that's the game you're referring to, I'd love an excuse to play it again sometime. In any case, the user IDs swerd_murd--I put quite a bit of time into it back in the day and had quite a few fun games. Gunslinger L2 spam is amazing .
@smithers - wait PJ Shooter 2 has online!?!? I was gonna wait for the inevitable sale since pixeljunk games always seem to go on sale a week after I buy them, but I might push the envelope now.
@zez - just understand going into Vagrant Story that vibe-wise, it's very different from any other RPG (action or otherwise) that I've played. Your stats barely change at all throughout the game and items/equipment change very, very slowly. Weapons are similarly semi-static, and most of the challenge/evolution comes from equipping different pieces of equipment to exploit enemy weaknesses rather than grinding. The inventory is also a wee bit limited and the menu system is somewhat weighty and needs to be used a lot. It's not at all uncommon to go into a room with your weapon that was doing 70 damage per kill and have it doing 0 damage...to everything in the room, including bosses. Just warning you that it's very, very (VERY) different from anything you might be used to. Still, there's this magic moment about 2 hours in where you just kinda get what the game is going for and how to handle the challenges and you realize you're playing an absolute gem.
Still--be ready to get one-shotted by certain bosses 6 or so hours in I had some poison dragon guy cast a poison spell that hit me 6 or 7 times for like 40 damage apiece--instant KO from full health Next time I'll need poison-resistant armor, I'll need to cast Prostasia to trick out my stats, I'll need to quickly Degenerate him to sap his strength before he gets attacks off, and I'll need to change my Defense Skills to include one that halves the correct magical damage. This is the kind of prep-work you need to do to really make the game click....but man...when you do

My bad, yes, Lead and Gold (although it is very bloody )
I'll add you to my friends list. Hope to catch you online soon!
@WaltzElf I have Lead and Gold and I wouldn't mind playing a few games sometimes. I'm not sure if you are on my friends list, but my PSN ID is UNC5052.

I don't think you are. I'll add you as well.
Just so everyone knows, my PSN ID is monkeybear2001
@zez - yeah i dunno how i read that incorrectly...I read Xenogears and saw Vagrant Story. Well--at any rate, I did a nice little bit of pontificating on it for any and all interested parties
Sorry though--that was weird. And Xenogears is a good game too--a bit text-box heavy by today's standards but the music is fantastic and the battle system....well, it gets better later
@Swerd... Oh, I was playing it literally minutes after the surprise message hit my inbox. I'm just still loving it!
I know there has been a good bit of praise here for Enslaved, but after sitting on my shelf since Christmas, I was able to finally get into it after wrapping up Dead Space 2. Needless to say I played half the game straight through in one sitting. Monkey is a dumb name for a main character on paper, but in the game it's perfect. The bond between the two main characters and their interactions is so gripping and involving it propels the game into a top tier title. This game can be found dirt cheap now, and I highly recommend it to everyone here. It's just a fantastic game. Part Uncharted, part Beyond Good and Evil, part Ninja Gaiden, and a few more great series all in one.
Oh, and you guys know I'm a die-hard Ninja Gaiden fan right? I got a new toy recently! Kawasaki ZX-6R Ninja Limited Edition Monster Racing Edition
I'll find out Thursday if it's available, but I'm going to get the tag to read RYU
Yeah I just finished Enslaved last week. I thought it was a really fun game. I guess it wasn't as polished as some comparable games, and it did frustrate me at times. But still, I kept on wanting to play through each chapter, so I guess it did something right .
The ending was a bit odd, even though it made some kind of sense, so I might have to look into the game's source material to read more about it.
Enslaved would've been perfect if not for a few slight problems.
1) Camera is just too close. I can see this not being nearly as much of an issue if the game's displaying in 3D (which assumes the player has both a 3D TV set and the 10 dollar DLC) but there are plenty of times were there's no good way to get a good view of your surroundings. Still--fighting intelligently minimizes this issue.
2) The two "racing scenes" So as not to spoil, I'll not delve into the content, but both nimbus-riding race-scenes require the player to hold Up on the left stick to move forward instead of requiring any sort of throttle button, and the right stick adjusts camera/direction in the same way it does in the normal game. On normal it might not have been such an issue, but Hard requires virtually perfect navigation of these 40-ish second segments and the controls are just lousy in this case. I had to retry both of these 30ish times probably and had a few near-meltdowns in the process. Granted--normal-game nimbus use, while frame-rate-problemmy, is fine....but these parts of the game, while cool to try the first time, quickly wore out their respective welcomes.
3. Chapter 8 (I think) in Trip's city fighting off enemies down this straightaway....easily the hardest battle-related part in the game no questions. Tons of invisible walls and invisible objects to stick to and multiples of enemies with 6-hit combos starting with a block-breaking attack. Given the design of the game, it can be completely unfair if it decides to be. I always hate that kind of difficulty--eventually you luck out and one of them starts an attack pattern far enough away so you can actually do something about it, but I had plenty of bobbled-between-unblockable-attacks deaths.
4) Really weird bugs - in 2 different spots in the game, I had bugs that just up and killed my ability to progress. Once was atop an elevator where I was supposed to see Pigsy, triggering the elevator's movement and moving the game forward. He just wasn't there--prompting me to run around confused for 15 minutes before sighing and reloading a checkpoint. Of course the game was so confused at this point that it decided my checkpoint was the very beginning of the chapter. Not fun. At all.
It's a game that's much greater than the sum of its parts, but one that makes its base in the Unreal Engine quite apparent. Couple this with a main character that isn't relate-able or even likable until a good halfway through the game and I can see why it didn't sell as well as expected, despite the fact that I loved it, all things considered.
@Fuzzy - game has little to nothing to do with its "source material" btw...the loosest of loosely-based, imo
@Swerd - haha I thought it was quite loosely based, but I thought there might have been something relatable there. Oh well.
Yeah the nimbus parts were quite fun, but the chase scenes really did need to be zoomed out. Especially since a lot of the jumps seemed to be guesses as I couldnt quit see the gaps.
In chapter 12 I got stuck. A glitch prevented me from jumping between the carriages. I spent ages walking around thinking I'm an idiot for not knowing what to do. Then finally restarted for it to work. Which comes to the checkpoints. I found them too far apart, and having to skip the movies every time was annoying.
I could keep going on about the little things that annoyed me, but at the end of the day I still really enjoyed it and hope there is a sequel. Has anybody played the DLC? I never really liked Pigsy very much until near the end. Saying that, I did chuckle at lots of the things he said, so it might be a few enjoyable hours.
