So, what are we hacking today? The blast door to the mainframe? The memory chip of that android? A virtual server somewhere in cyberspace? Some killer AI gone rogue? Or are we just doing a fun hacking minigame or watch a "hacking..." progress bar?!
No matter if just a tech-savy sidekick character or the central gameplay/story element, hacking is our theme for December - the last quiz of the year.
It's gonna be a bit harder than the dog quiz, but I hope you'll have fun regardless.
@ReaderRagfish@PolarExperience: Yeah it's a harder one - difficult to get the mix right. But I will try to balance it with hints & clues on the weekends!
Don't forget you can always update your first entries later.
by the way, this is the result of last months poll:
11 people actually use their smartphone, wouldn't have thought. Also, tablet users scored the most points on average. Dig out your iPad, then you'll know more (statistically).
Okay, so far there are 33 people trying their luck and knowledge this round, none of those from this community. Have you joined yet? Will you after this set of clues?
1) Several games are based on famous movie licenses: Number 2, 8 and 10.
2) The 17, 19, 21 and 25 are also license games, but the source material is very mixed... we have a Manga, toy line, offline-RPG and book license.
3) The oldest game (fifth row) was released in 1985, the newest title (third row) just came out in October this year.
4) Picture 9 shows a turtle.
5) Picture 11 shows a robot mechanic. He gives you an item that lets you hack and take over other robots.
Jingle Bells, red nosed reindeer, Frosty the snowman - yes I know it's Christmas, but don't forget to join the last quiz of the year!
So far there's over forty people, and none from this community.
Here is the last full set of clues - there'll be little more than a small reminder next week, so best get moving:
1) With the exception of the last row, all games this round appeared after the year 2000.
2) The following games were published by Ubisoft: 4, 5, 15, 16
3) For this rounds last five titles, three are from the 80s and two from the 90s.
4) Game 1 shows a female hacker in a popular AAA first person shooter.
5) Number 6 is the only game in this round that was also released on the Sega Dreamcast.
Watch out folks, this quiz ends on monday - you only have the weekend left! 54 people are in so far, that's not bad. Only one of them is from this forum.
Christmas is over, and so are any excuses - come and join the last riddle of 2018!
1) Number 7 is not System Shock.
2) Borderlands is not in this quiz at all.
3) The same goes for Lawnmower Man.
4) To get a full point for number 17 you have to give me the name of the specific toy line this license game is about. The big brand name only gets you half a point.
5) Come on now, "the world" is not the correct answer for Game 19!
2018 is over, and so is the fifth season of this video game quiz. With 73 players it was a good finale, thank you everyone. So, who is the master hacker who got all points in this one? Hold tight, there's TWELVE people who got full score!
Ten of those are from the old maniac forum, where (just like the year before) the admins did a lottery with amazon vouchers from surplus affiliate earnings of the year.
And as a rule change - there's no more differences between first place contenders. Full points equals first place from now on.
And the answers & high score table? Scroll down and see for yourself!

Here is the NintendoLife-Exclusive-List:
1 - 04.5 points - Dogorilla
Congrats to Dogorilla for... well he's the only one this round.
Many thanks to all for joining, and see you next time - this weekend there'll be the year end results, and in February we'll start with the new quiz season!
@Dogorilla: Ah, my bad. With (dog)"Gorilla" in your username I immediately put you as a guy... and after a bit of wikipedia I feel pretty stupid, of course there's female Gorillas too.
@GrailUK: Yes, Paradroid was on the initial list, it pretty much invent the "hacking minigame" right? But I had used it just a few months prior in the Commodore quiz, so I decided against it. Would you have recognised the remake, Paradroid 90?
The year is over, and I'd like to announce some overall winners (and winning forums) from all the contestants and points of 2018.
As this quiz is a competition among several online forums (18 in total!), I'd like to start with the community ranking and explain how you score points for your forum.
SCORE HIGH
If you make it to the top 10 in any of my quizzes, you gather points for your forum:
Getting first place (by having the highest or generally full score) makes 5 points - a gold medal!
There can be more than one if several users have perfect results.
For place two you get 4 points. Silver!
For place three you get 3 points. Bronze!
Those who make it to rank four, five or six... they get 2 points. (iron medal)
And who at least makes it to seven, eight, nine or ten... that's a wood medal and worth 1 point.
ENDURANCE
Frequent participation also gets you points for your forum, that's how you can contribute even without lots of nerd knowledge.
If you join the quiz five times without a break, you get 1 point. I call it a half marathon.
Those that make it for ten quizzes without missing any (e.g. from mid 2017 to mid 2018) get 2 points - a full marathon.
As an addition, if you binge through the entire last year without leaving any riddle aside... that's even 3 points.
And for the most faithful, the MEGATON: 4 points for those that participated on 30 quizzes in a row.
If you say that's crazy - five users out of the almost 200 last year scored that prize.

Alright, this is how the participating forums have made it through the year:

A round of applause, 12th place for the NintendoLife Forum!
That's a bit below average, but still okay - you also got some stiff competition. Hey, you are even tied with the ResetEra. Get two more points in 2019 and you'll climb two spots...
The RetroGamer community is being excluded (too few participants), and the same goes for the VierPfeile forum (that score is the work of a single user, administrator Cebix). The RetroCanteen comes in as a new Challenger.
-
This abstract community score aside, who actually made the points?
The following users made it into the top 10s:
wood medal - 1 point - ReaderRagfish (SoundFX Quiz)
wood medal - 1 point - BrainOfGrimlock (Dog Quiz)
The second category is endurance... this is how your forum did:
3 points - Dogorilla
1 points - JoakimZ
-
And before I forget, here the winner of the last survey:
Alright, you like pixel-riddles and a bit on the easier side. Got it.
For comparison and motivation - here is the local top 15 for the year 2018. In brackets the changes to the previous year (where applicable). Users with zero points have been sorted by their 2017 score. Congrats to JoakimZ for the lead!
