Sadly the only one I have played is the first one. When the second and third one came out I didn't have a PS2 and Yeah I can get MGS3 on the 3DS but I can't see me playing that game on a handheld. As for 4 I don't own a PS3 so that one is out of the question too. As far as the first one goes its one of my favorite PS one games and I still play it from time to time.

I've only played Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater, and it was a wonderful game (I just so happen to have it in my card slot right now, lol). It's definitely one of my favorite 3DS games, I can easily understand (and agree) with the praise it gets, & I'd love to try the other games in the series if I get the chance.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

You can get it for 360 if you are interested, I guess. The 3rd is awesome, but to me 2 is confusing as hell. I still can't get used to the controls, even though I beat it years ago.
I like the 4th, even though the bosses sucked and the plot was barely ok.
As for GZ, I'm not buying it - I will wait for release of 5. I'm sure it will be with GZ in it or there will be cheaper bundle fast
I'm a huge fan of the MGS series. I've recently started going through them all again in preparation for Ground Zeroes and then eventually Phantom Pain, I'm currently on MGS4 still.
I've pre-ordered GZ for the PS4, I know there's plenty of people who are annoyed about the game price and the length of the game, and I'll admit if it was probably any other series, I'd feel the same. But there isn't any other game series out their that gets me as hyped up as MGS, so Kojima gets a pass from me.
Probably my favourite in the series is MGS1, there's just something about the setting, characters, story and music that appeals to me more than the others. Even though I love every other entry in the series, even the Acid series on PSP if anyone ever played those.
I know the Plot of the games is also a hit and miss for people, especially with MGS4, with some of the cut scenes, that even I'll admit, do tend to drag on a bit too long, but to be fair, the game was trying to wrap up probably the most confusing and huge stories ever created for a video game series.

Was the third one released on the 360? If it was I never knew that I just thought it came out on the PS2 and 3DS.

If you have a Vita you can get 2 and 3 in the collection just not Peace Walker.
the first one is still my absolout favourite game of all time. and so far the only game that had (still has) an impact on my life and character. the story is very philosophical. also the music in the end credits of that game is one of the finest pieces of music i have ever heared.
i played 1, 2 and 3 and i watched a playthrough of 4. i would love to play all peace walker and the metal gear games, too but i dont have a console to play them on.
i would definetly get GZ now if i had a console to play it on. the price tag is really bad but like @MoggleMuffins said, this series is just to good to miss it.

PW is good you just can't take parts of the story seriously but the extra missions are great.
